I think Joseph is severely underrated by many on here. Didn't he have better defensive stats than Nnamdi two of the last three years with getting three times as many balls thrown his way.

I read that the Texans signed P Brad Maynard to a one-year deal today.

[rquoter]Down but not out: ...J-Joe and Manning received plenty of attention from defensive backs coach Vance Joseph, who communicated with the duo frequently during drills. Jason Allen and Troy Nolan started in their stead, but that didn’t stop Manning from shouting out calls.

Good rookie, bad rookie: During seven-on-seven drills, rookie linebacker Brooks Reed – dirty blond locks sticking out of the back of his helmet – dropped back into coverage and pilfered a pass thrown by rookie quarterback T.J. Yates. Reed took the offering to the end zone untouched. Reed is locked in a battle with Connor Barwin for the starting strongside linebacker (SAM) spot while Yates, who had a rather uneven morning, is slated at the moment as the No. 3 behind the two Matts.

Cautious of conditioning: Coach Gary Kubiak consulted with doctors about the players’ conditioning considering they had been working out on their own during the lockout. The Texans practiced outside for three-quarters of the morning workout, then moved inside for the last portion. They’ll do that for a few days until the doctors believe they’re acclimated to the heat and humidity.

Cushing on the mend: Inside linebacker Brian Cushing underwent knee surgery in the offseason. He was unable to participate in regular drills in the morning practice. He ran on a side field. Coach Gary Kubiak said it would be a few days before Cushing would be able to practice.

Numbers change: Running back Ben Tate, who missed last season with a broken bone in his foot, has switched to No. 44, the number worn by former fullback Ben Tate. Quarterback Matt Leinart has switched to No. 11, which he wore at USC, where he won the Heisman Trophy and a national championship.[/rquoter]

#Texans have a new P - Brad Maynard. I was so disgusted w/ Matt Turk that I'm not even worried that Maynard was dead last in NFL last yr in Net Punting. (also his long punt of 56yds was worst in the league)

As a major critic of Turk, I'm willing to give Maynard a chance. The winds in Chicago are ridiculous, which make straight comparisons to other punters around the league a bit tricky. For example, he had five punts for an average of 32 yards, his worst performance of the season, in a game against New England that was played in a blizzard.

Moreover, Maynard seems to be a much better situational punter, which was the biggest problem with Turk. Over the past three years, Turk had 183 punts... 17 were downed inside the 10 (9.3%) and 17 went for touchbacks (9.3%). In that same timespan, Maynard had 256 punts (significantly more)... 29 were downed inside the 10 (11.3%) and only 12 went for touchbacks (4.7%).

imo, looking simply at distance is misleading... Maynard should be an upgrade.

Maynard is a solid punter. Not to make excuses for him, but last season he was coming off right hip surgery. He is a very good directional punter and based on stats, 2nd best all-time in punts inside the 20.

Willing to give anyone a chance. What holes are we left with at this point that we plan to fill via FA?

Yeah, but if the winds are the culprit, he's bound to have some crazy long punts when they are blowing in his direction.

Bottom line - I'm okay with it, but I want to see what Brett "The Hit Man" Hartmann can do, also. His video on Youtube makes him look pretty good.

Just another in the long line of proud Texan punters. Chad Stanley eat your heart out.
