Does he think Wandy can clear waivers?

#Astros now telling teams they're done for today. So Wandy Rodriguez, Brett Myers, Jason Michaels, Carlos Lee can write rent checks. #trades

I just mean that he, like ryan, seems to flirt around with the no-hitter pretty often. If he would have gotten one today, that would be 1 behind ryan at the same age. So there are similarities. Nobody will probably catch ryan but I wouldn't put a 4 or 5 no-hitters past verlander for his career.

I doubt it, but we'll probably find out. A lot of teams in the Astros position just throw people on waivers to see who clears and who they might be able to deal.

Yes. He might. At the very least a team willing to put in a claim, may be willing to trade. I doubt he would make it through. If we give him up purely to rid ourselves of his contract, I would be extremely disappointed. It would be another terrible decision by Wade.

How on earth did we get such a brainless set of GM's over the last 10 years? POOPura and Wade...horrific.

#Astros called #Yankees told them refuse take much $ on Wandy, plus wanted good prospects. Yanks said no. Deal possibility dead

Methinks that the Astros bum hole is still sore from the Braves trade.

Wandy should command top prospects in a trade. He is not an ace but he will give you quality starts and eat innings. And his salary is market value; thus, there should be no reason for the Astros to eat $$$s on a trade.

Other GMs who think Wade is not being reasonable wrt trading Wandy are just mad that they did not get in on the Bourn firesale.

Teams don't like trading for contracts though. They prefer to wait until the offseason when they budget for these contracts and sign FAs that don't cost them top prospects.

Thing I learned from this trade deadline is the days of trading veterans for sure thing minor leaguers is all but over.

The idiotic extension Wandy got, including the team option year that turns into a player option, tanks his value.

But I agree with holding onto him unless we get a really good offer (should've done that with Bourn too).

It depends on what we're giving up. Hunter is just slightly above average. It was too much to expect Domonic Brown.

Last year we traded Berkman and Oswalt when they were old and on the decline.

I'm puzzled by the return on Bourn though. My guess is not many teams were looking for a legit CF.

I think this is more about Astros mismanagement than the market.

I don't understand why some people think Wandy will pass through waivers. First, the worst element of his contract is the 4th year (when he's 35) that becomes a player option for 14 million when traded. I'm assuming that's not the case if he's picked up off waivers. So it essentially becomes a 2/$25 contract vs a 3/$39 or whatever. So if you're the blue jays and you're interested in him, why not claim him and kill the astros' leverage. Or if you're the Red Sox claim him and worst case you pick him up on only the 2 year contract and you keep him away from the Yankees.

The Myers and Wandy extensions were terrible. There's no excuse for the Myers one. Wandy at least was market value but the size and options killed his trade value. It was just another case of the half hearted rebuilding effort that's been going one since Wade got here.

I'd give the Pence trade B+ and the Bourn a D.

Not sure how they can get under 60 million for next year unless they can move one of Wandy or Myers. Lee + those two are about 40 million for next year already.

If we get word that a team will claim Wandy, won't we just pull him off waivers and trade him in the off-season? There's no way we let a team claim him for nothing.

But it was clear late in the game that the Astros were going to have to eat a huge chunk of his contract. The players they got in return were almost secondary. If some team claims him, they might consider just dumping the salary and being done with it. I doubt it, but I don't think it's a no-brainer.

That may be ... but teams do give up good prospects for rental players.

BTW none of the pitchers we picked up in the Pence or Bourn deals may pitch a MLB season any better than Wandy has this year (or the year before that or two years before or ...) Projecting how well Wandy will be able to perform going forward through the end of his contract is fairly easy. Barring injury his numbers should stay about the same, if not get better. Projecting how well a high/low A pitcher who is a top project will pitch is much more hit or miss.

Maybe, maybe not. But they will hopefully pitch for cheap long after Wandy is gone. And since the Astros are looking to 2014 and beyond, they really don't care what Wandy does this year or the next or even the one after that. In the long run, no one will care whether this team wins 50 games or wins 60 games next year.
