Even before this ban, Yao actually public said he doesn't like the idea of renting an NBA player for a fraction of a season and prefers getting guys who are serious about pursuing a career in the CBA. He said getting an NBA star would be more of a publicity stunt to sell tickets and isn't really good for the development of his team or the CBA.

So, I doubt Yao was ever really considering getting Scola.

Brooks was just offered a deal in China.

I think he should take it and just make his career over there. He gets to be a starter, which seems to be the most important thing to him. At least, it was more important than just helping the Rockets win in whatever role he was given.

The Sharks already signed John Lucas III and Mike Harris to 2-year-contracts last year.

You want him to move leagues permanently? He's definitely good enough to play in the NBA. He'll need teammates who can cover his defensive faults, though, if he wants to be in a contending team.

Those 2 guys have a good chance of a serious career in China, not so much in the NBA. They have tried to make their mark in the NBA, but have fallen short each time.

With his value at an all-time low in the NBA, this might be the best move for him. Even if his Chinese basketball contract is less than his NBA salary, he could make more in endorsements in China than the USA. He could be just as popular if not more popular than Steve Francis over there.

 How quickly Rockets fans forget. He and Scola carried us in that Lakers 7 game series. It would really piss someone off if they had a guaranteed starting spot on their team and lost it because they got injured and couldn't recover quickly enough to save it. Think about it this way. He won MIP and almost lead his team past the Lakers. Tops in the league in 3 point shots made and his backup couldn't (at the time) shoot to save his life. And then bam. Its all gone.

Had that ankle injury not have happened, Brooks was on pace for a spectacular year.

Seeing how Yao was treated, I'd never waste a high pick on a Chinese born player, not unless I thought they'd go rogue and simply stay in the States.
