HURRICANE HUNTER AIRCRAFT FINDS THAT DON IS A LITTLE STRONGER.

10:00 AM CDT Thu Jul 28
    Location: 24.1°N 90.1°W
    Max sustained: 45 mph
    Moving: NW at 14 mph
    Min pressure: 1001 mb

It also has Don moving NW instead of WNW. A prolonged movement to the NW should bring some of those much needed rain bands into Houston.

Does it look like the latest 10 AM models are shifting to the North again?
I am not an expert but I just want some rain. My backyard is cracking. Looks like an earthquake went through it.

Well, both Ike and Rita which did substatial damage came ashore lower than Cat 4.

    Ike as a 2.

Alicia came through as a very low 3.

Both of those storms did way more damage than I'd like repeated for Houston/Galveston.

Ike actually had the storm surge of a cat 4.

    sure did.

but storm surge didn't hit houston, and it was still a colossal pain in the ass, here.

Ike changed the way I look at hurricanes. I don't want to stick around for one like that again...not because of what happens during the storm...but because of the week or more of living without power after the storm.

What's interesting is that once they achieve cat 4 or 5 status, even though they weaken they carry a bigger punch that the typical cat 1 or 2. Rita was so powerful at one point that it was actually demonstrating the "stadium effect" something that had never been seen before, was just a matter of theory.

Yes, I am a full fledged weather nerd.

If Don stays disorganized, keeps this slow pattern and doesn't grow I fully expect the 5PM spaghetti models to point more north towards us a little bit. It would be great for those of us crying for rain.

The two weeks after Ike sucked bad... but I wouldn't trade them for another 25 hours in 3 mph traffic to get out of town like I experienced with Rita.

i wouldn't either...i wouldn't handle it the same way i did with Rita, either. I also don't think you're going to see an evacuation like Rita again unless we're looking at strong Cat 4/5 storm.

my rule was always, if it's Cat 4, get outta town. Stick around for anything less. Now I don't want to stick around for either.

Don't have to wait quite that long. The Spaghetti models will update around 2pm. It's the official NHC track will be at 5pm but I think that'll be 4pm central time.

I'd gladly pay the $400 for a generator and 5 gallons of gas than take on that mess ever again.
