I'm not sure if anyone discussed potential cuts the Texans will/should make, but here are the players I believe will be cut in order to make a big signing possible: Derrick Ward- Over $4 mill Jarvis Green (WHO the hell is that??) - $3 mill Shaun Cody- $2.5 mill Okoye- Only listed at $850 grand, so I'm not sure how this would clear the way for much to happen That's close to $10 mill for players who i'm sure are easily replaced with equivalent yet cheaper talent Moe
We literally just re-signed Ward and Cody. Even if we wanted to get rid of them, which we obviously don't, it would send a bad message to the rest of the league about our FO.
Per rotoworld Welp. If this guy is right, I guess we just hope the Jets can't make the money work and we get him by default.
I think fringe players are happy to be in the league, period. But I certainly see your point, it's just that they can easily be resigned at lower contracts or replaced by players already on the roster. If it means getting Nnamdi, to hell with your "reputation", but I highly doubt it'd have an impact on that front. Moe
Ward- dont see being cut. Probably Slaton(who wont clear much money) Jarvis Green - one of the many DEs signed last year when we were looking for a DE. Didnt know we signed him for 3 mil though Cody - No way, not happening imo. Cody is currently the starting NT or battling with Earl Mitchell for it. Okoye - very may well be cut. --------------------------------- According to MLive.com's Tom Kowalski, free agent Nnamdi Asomugha wants to play for the Jets. Kowalski is a Lions reporter, but he's presumably done digging on Asomugha because Detroit has so often been connected to this year's premier free agent. That digging apparently led Kowalski to believe Asomugha wants to play in New York. There have been several other indications this is the case, so it isn't a crazy notion. If Asomugha is willing to take a discount to play in the destination he covets, the marriage could very well happen http://twitter.com/#!/TomKowalski36/statuses/96029259138740224
Ward and Cody aren't going anywhere. And no way a 10th overall pick is making 850K in the 2nd to last year of his deal.
I remember hearing something about how front loaded his contract was (sign on bonus or otherwise) but I was surprised as well. Can anyone confirm? Also, why can't they be cut? Ward especially is not an irreplaceable piece. $4+ is outrageous for a backup running back in my opinion. I say bring him back at a lower rate if he can't find a similar deal out there Moe
This is a post from a Falcon's forum.... Amobi Okoye - DL - Texans Texans DT Amobi Okoye's base salary has climbed from $850,000 to $2.95 million for the 2011 season. Okoye has started a bunch of games to trigger the final-year escalator in his rookie deal, but this is another reason to believe his Texans career is over. The 10th pick in the 2007 draft already may struggle to fit new DC Wade Phillips' 3-4 system. Houston will shop Okoye around this offseason.
I am starting to get worried... Jets' interest in Nnamdi Asomugha (and a dream pairing with Revis) is real interesting. Remember, Nnamdi played 5 yrs for Rex's brother Rob. I do think this about Nnamdi -- Winning is important this time around. And I believe he'd sacrifice some money for the right situation. Albert Breer
I think you found some bad numbers. Those are probably what they were making before they got cut from their previous teams (Ward and Green) and someone just copied their salaries to our roster. They were probably signed much cheaper than that considering they weren't signed during the prime free agency period.
If he goes to the Jets I will be in disbelief and it will only further make me angry at the Texans. The Jets will have managed to turn their team around twice with two different head coaches while we wait for Kubiak to do it once in the same time. And through that the Jets, while managing to be significantly better, falling apart, rebuilding again and getting significantly better again, will have managed their cap so much better that they will be able to sign one of the top two players at a position where they have the other of the top 2. And we need to get excited about signing Carlos Rogers and the like.
For some reason, the jets don't worry me... Plus, if they want to improve they're chances, they should worry about offense.
I think they might be using this to get Antonio Cromartie on the cheap. He is looking for a multi year deal now.
As disappointing as being left at the alter by Aso would be, it would hardly be the end of the world. Instead of putting your eggs in one basket, you go sign Weddle and a veteran corner to shore up the secondary while opening up money for a real #2 receiver or a legit NT.
