My impression on the Texans free agency though process is that Bob and Gary/Rick are so concerned with getting caught up in free agent hype and overpaying that they don't even try with the big names. They settle for second-tier and under the radar guys -- Anthony Weaver, Antonio Smith, Jacques Reeves, etc.

because ESPN said so. and then a couple guys on a BBS said it, too, so that makes it totally for reals.

Just for fun click on the "similar links" off season threads below.
Ay ay, just got a head ache.

But I do have a good feeling about all 3 phases of the game finally coming together in one season.

Just give "us" a top 18 defense! and "we're" in business.

This is their tenth offseason. At some point, it's not good enough that you "try" (that of course being pure conjecture) - it's about getting the job done.

McNair has set out to following the Rooney (Steelers) ownership philosophy: build through the draft, keep your guys together, and avoid paying high dollar outside FAs. Orlando Pace is one of the only big names they've ever made a serious honest effort to bring in.

And hey, they can go whatever why they want....but almost a decade in, their model of franchise building has been, at best, poor. Only Buffalo and Detroit have been out of the playoffs longer, and the Lions look like they may snap their streak as soon as this year.

I'm not going to burn them if Aso doesn't happen - I'd like him, but I don't think any CB is honestly worth 10+% of your cap. What will leave me pissy is if they sign Sensabaugh without actual sincere effort to get better safeties. What will leave me kicking kittens is if they bring in only second tier guys and miss out on the postseason again.

All I really want is an acknowledgement from the franchise that they get that it's time to put chips on the table and make something happen. They owe it to us.

how do you know it not to be true? This game could be played all day.

There are a ton of factors of why a top tier FA wouldn't have chose the texans in the past.

They certainly try to keep a leash on the spending but i'm not sure they don't even try for big names. The way I picture it is that the texans offer a reasonable contract that isnt too risky for them...the FA looks at it, then sees a figure much more inflated and promptly tosses the texans offer in the shredder.

    well, let's not get pissy.

besides, clubbing baby seals is far easier than kicking kittens.

    I don't...I already said specifically I don't know.

This is true of any franchise. Eventually you get judged by what you hit on, though...and how bad your misses are. Bottom line business.

    Dynamite...where's that gotten us?

they certainly havent done a good job. It's just a pet peeve to hear "didnt try". Trying and failing is one thing and understandable. Never trying, is just something I have a hard time believing. Like rather than putting out an offer they decided to watch everyone loves raymond.

    .
I never understood the sense of entitlement some fans have. Yes, i expect them to try and all but i never felt like i'm owed anything by a sports team i'm a fan of, other than a good faith effort (even if it turns out to be flawed in execution in the effort)

potential cap space to sign the best CB in the business. It's not like the texans have always had a lot of cap flexibility over the years so they were hard pressed to compete with the top FA earners

wait...the years of this strategy kept them from having cap space all the previous years from making offers to the top FA earners? your argument just bit itself in the ass.

weren't the Texans in real cap trouble after the 2005 season? I seem to remember the highest paid OL in the league, performing the worst in the league, or something like that?

but it shouldn't take 5 years to fix cap issues.

Listen Max, for some reason its homer-central around these parts might as well give up stuff like accountability, learning from mistakes, improvement etc.

Remember if it's broke - don't talk about it and don't fix it. What do you think this is - a sports messageboard or something?

LOL @ the fans holding the team "accountable". what are you gonna do Josh, hold up an ugly sign at the game? buy less beer? threaten to get rid of your season tickets, then not do it? I'm sure they're trembling.

keep throwing labels at folks whose position you don't agree with. perhaps those whom you call "homer" will call you "hater" back?

and yes, I agree with Max (the freaking hater) that the Texans have made the bed they're lying in with upset fans. Guess I'm a hater, too.

It makes perfect sense if you actually think about it rather than just play the role of bitter fan with a red ass

2008 - texans were approx 3-4 mill under
    2009 about 4
2010 uncapped year and they didnt go crazy.

i can't remember all the ends and outs of the texans cap over the last several years but they have been relatively higher up. They were spending money, just not always in the best way, weather it be bad draft picks, poor FA signing (green) or just the resigning of key players, Mario/Demeco/AJ/Winston etc.

Quite possibly the most worthless news in the history of anything. This is why twitter sucks.

i'm obviously a homer because i see their faults and observe all the valid reasons for those faults (right or wrong) while evaluationg all the variables in the equation.

I guess i should just be super constructive and say; they don't try, they never sign anyone, mcnair only cares about money and the players don't like Rick Smith...there, now i've held them accountable!
