Lance Z just echoed by sentiments on twitter. The cap is going to go up substantially in the next few years. Smart teams and smart agents are going to utilize that and make deals happen despite tight cap room this year.
You don't have to be a standout to be better than Sensabaugh. Outside of Texas, Sensabaugh isn't even on the radar for most of the teams looking for a safety. It's only here and bc of wade that he's on our list. But, others that are better than him... Weddle Landry Harper Mikell Goodson Huff Manning Bigby
We apparently signed UDFA Jason Teague (CB) from TCU. This guy was the #1 CB on the Frogs defense last year. Very surprised he wasn't drafted. I think he'll have a shot at making the team given what we currently have back there in the secondary.
i disagree with the premise that having someone who can offer some veteran leadership and knowledge does not add value. A good safety does direct the secondary and communicate with the LBs even in certain situations. I'm not against weddle either, although he will come at a higher price assumingly. I misread, thought your said I "don't see the infatuation" rather than "i hate the..."
I'd rather have Aso and an average safety. But if we lose out on Aso, I would be ecstatic if we got Weddle or Mikell along with a decent corner. I just believe Aso is that good.
I don't think any fans are fascinated with him - fans are much more fascinated with Weddle, since he's a top tier cover safety that would really protect the back end. As others mentioned, the reason you see him mentioned so much is that it's been considered a virtual lock that Wade came to town planning on bringing over Sensabaugh in what I view as a no-bid process. The upside is that both he and Wade want to keep working together. The downside is that he's a strong safety and Wade's system calls for two cover safeties. He's an upgrade over Pollard in coverage, but who isn't. It's reasonable to debate whether the smarter play would be going after Weddle, Huff, Mickel, etc for FS (next to Quin) and a fair CB (Joseph, Taylor) vs paying above market for Sensabaugh and making a play for Asomugha at high dollars. Either choice can be defended. Myself personally, I'd love to finally see a top shelf safety in the back - those guys are your INT machines, and it's nearly impossible to take them out of a play. Myself, I think you get a lot more impact for your dollar with safeties. It's not difficult to take an elite CB out of the play, not in this era of 4+ target aerial assault NFL offenses. For us specifically, Wade's system is designed to put all emphasis on creating turnovers by blindly bum-rushing most downs to force the ball out of the QB's hands in under 3 secs. It's my view that you'd rather have an elite safety back there to make a play on the ball rather than an elite CB who the QB knows never to throw at (assuming a one or the other choice). The danger of this system is a WR slipping out on a hot route (serious danger with Kareem) - high risk every down of a big play. Got to have capable safeties keeping a lid on things.
Landry, Mikell, and Manning I can agree with. But Michael Huff has been terrible, and I'm not sold on Harper, Bigby or Goldson (sp?). You also have to consider that Wade isn't looking for a prototypical strong safety, he prefers "twin" safeties. And if he thinks Sensabaugh fits that role, I'm inclined to believe him.
I think in 2013 the TV deals get renewed. I heard the cap will be $140 million-ish. We could see teams backload the contracts in anticipation of the larger cap.
Heard Manning talked about this morning. Apparently he has a low football IQ and makes a lot of mental mistakes. There is a fear with him that he would really struggle to learn a new system in time for the season.
The cap this year was basically made $120 as a favor to the small teams so they wouldn't have to get their payroll's up to a huge number. This is lower than it was in the last capped season and THAT season didn't include the new Monday Night Football revenue. With the new deal that opens up the television revenues to the players, the cap next year will jump.
McClain_on_NFL John McClain Texans want Matt Leinart back. He told them he wants a chance to start. Report in Seattle says Seahawks are interested. Makes sense. McClain_on_NFL John McClain I'll be shocked if the Texans sign Asomugha. They're up against the cap and have a lot of needs. Won't put all their eggs in his basket. McClain_on_NFL John McClain Texans need starters at CB and S in free agency. They'll need to replace FB Vonta Leach if he leaves, as expected. McClain_on_NFL John McClain Texans hoping to re-sign Leach, Leinart, WR Jacoby Jones and OT Rashad Butler. All will have to be replaced with free agents if they leave.
Yeah, this year and next should be around $120. Then in 2013 the new TV deals kick in and that's when we should see a higher number. The NFL wants to sell rights for a first-half Thursday night game package. I imagine they can get a pretty penny for it which will increase revenue and the cap.
The General is so out of touch. "Up against the cap" no cuts, no restructuring has happened yet and it ignores that ability to actually structure cap friendly contracts. Didn't Butler tell Houston radio yesterday that he is out?
I agree with this - the Wade system generates a mess and the secondary has to be on the ball to clean it up. All of the emphasis is on reaction time, ability to break on the ball, and make a play. In a sense, you want safeties that can just flat out play. It's not like the ZBS for the O-Line. If I had to run it, I'd make a playmaking safety with range my top priority. Weddle Huff Mickell Dawan Landry CC Brown -D)
Yep. The cap will be ballooning in short order. The Texans could cut Orlovsky, Andre Davis, Steve Slaton and Amobi and buy cap room, use what amounts to $6.5 million in exceptions with the new CBA... that doesn't include the possibility of signing Mario to a new deal to get his cap number down for this year, restructuring Antonio Smith to get his ridiculous cap number down... and THEN you can finagle a contract to put the hit on another year. If the Texans want to spend big they can. If they choose not to it is by choice, not by necessity.
Teams would owe the texans a 3rd round pick if they signed Butler away from the texans, right? I believe that was the case. If so, then it may be unlikely that a team signs him. I'd actually be all for that. A 3rd round pick can be huge.
