Andre has averaged more yards per game and more receptions per game than Rice did...given the fact that Andre spent years with Carr at QB...thats an amazing feat. Again, nobody here has said that Dre craps on Rice...but youre the one that says "no debate"...when it clearly is. Would Rice have any numbers close to what he had if he were a Texan? Not at all. Would Andre have better numbers if he was in Rice's position? Almost certainly, yes. Sure, Andre might not be the best ever...but it is, at the least, a discussion.
I know Rice's career numbers are ridiculous, but if I'm taking a guy for one game (or even one season), give me AJ80.
You have no idea what I'm trying to say obviously. The Bowe/Edwards point was to illustrate that receivers can still produce high TD numbers despite suspect QB play. I never said anything about them being better WRs because of TD numbers, I'm merely telling you that if you're judging WRs by their stats... TDs are very important. Jerry Rice was a first ballot HOF because he scored more TDs than anybody else in addition to setting all kinds of receiving records. Cris Carter and Tim Brown are 2nd and 3rd all time on most of the major receiving records and neither of them will make it into the HOF within their first 4 years of eligibility. A guy like Wes Welker who makes a living on underneath routes and going over the middle is obviously not going to be judged by the number of TDs he produced but how many catches he accumulated, Johnson is a different story, he's a possession receiver in some sense... but he is also a deep threat. I really think if he wants a legit shot at the HOF he needs to be at 100 TD catches for his career. He'll get it if he keeps plugging along at 8-9 a year, and his yardage consistency is very impressive... but I really don't think he can be mentioned in the same class as Rice because Jerry will always be in a class by himself. Moss could jump higher, Owens was more of a physical specimen, Marvin Harrison was more sure-handed, but nobody in the history of the game worked harder than Jerry Rice.
yeah well if johnson plays until he is 39 or 40 lets see how his stats are then. what a joke my friend.
by the way thats the same thing as comparing shaq's stats to hakeems 7 years ago, before shaq could have the numbers from the last few years thrown in. they have a way of evening out.
You really shouldn't argue this. He sure as **** isn't. Tim Brown has 10,000 yards and 100 TDs and he may not even get in. Andre has a long way to go before he'll be considered a lock.
I love Andre. The guy is an absolute beast of a player and he's easily the best WR in the league right now. But there is still no way I would take him over Jerry Rice.
You, sir, can kiss the darkest part of my white ass. We duel on the 'morrow. 20 paces at dawn in front of the Starbucks below the Apple Store in the galleria. Prepare to meet your maker.
Andre is going to make the HOF hands down. The guy has been the undisputed best wr in the NFL for at least 3+ years running now. I'd compare him to Albert Pujols of baseball, both are by far the model of excellence and best at their position. The fact that Dre is being compared to Rice already should let you know he is going to go down as one of the best.
Moes is just a bay area granola munching hippie wannabe stoner philosophy major that thinks he can ball. Holding onto the 49ers glory days is the only thing that gives his black little heart solace since Al Davis sits upon the frozen throne in Oakland, keeping the dreams of fans like moe crushed under his boney, liver-spotted ass for all eternity.
I'm just saying, he'd have to play at a high level until he was 38ish to get near Rice numbers, and he'd have to catch like 15 TDs for the next 12 seasons to catch up to him there. There isn't any reason he wouldn't be a Hall of Famer if he continues to beast for the next 4 years and then slowly declines... but he's been pretty much a workhorse in the Texans offense for a while now and that takes a toll on anyone's body. He's far from a lock if he breaks down in 2 years. But this is Houston sports, that'll never happen.
Casserly was crazy about Charles Rogers. If the texans had the #2 pick that year im sure they would have taken Rogers. Just would have been another historic pick for Good Ole Casserly
Is it just me, but is Moe (and everyone else) missing the point of the discussion? The question before the panel was if you are starting a team, do you take Rice or AJ? If the pick is made at the beginning of their career, it would be AJ every time. That's what Skip was trying to say. AJ is bigger, stronger, faster, and came from a big time program. It's easy to judge talent after the fact. But to start a team (and a career), AJ gets my vote.
Receivers drafted before JERRY RICE Al Toon - Wisconsin <-- Bigger program than Rice's Eddie Brown - Miami <-- big time program too Where is this . .RICE IS A DOWN FIELD THREAT versus a Possession receive. The dude ran a 4.7 40 at the combines. no disrespect to AJ . . . but this is almost a vintage battle of TALENT versus SKILL AND HARD WORK How many underneath routes did Rice TAKE TO THE HOUSE??? It was not always rice outpacing some cornerback by 5 yards . . . it was alot of Underneath stuff . . he just took to the house. . . I have to Agree with MOEs on this one. . it is not close. . .not yet. Rocket River
Jerry Rice is still the best receiver ever. but AJ will be in the HOF without a doubt. Too bad, he got an awful QB during most of his career (Carr).
