janis joplin's from port author. i used to work with this crazy old guy from there who graduated in the same era with her and jimmy johnson, yeah all from the P.A.T. anyway, this other guy we worked with in a different division had a hippie wife. so one day at a party, ole boy's wife asked the old guy about janis. so he's like yeah, one day some of my friends and i ran into janis on the beach and ran a train, and i didn't participate. the other dude's wife got mad
Amy put out two records and had one "in the can". It's going to be really creepy if the unreleased record turns out to be some kind of masterpiece. <iframe width="425" height="349" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/bjNLCbIMzZs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
The past few years I haven't kept up with popular music like I did when I was younger. I only listened to Amy Winehouse sing one song, and that was Rehab. It was an awards show, and she sung it live. My wife watches all those awards shows. When they announced her name and that she had won several awards I stopped and listened. It was a catchy song, but I didn't pay anyone attention to her music. I was always seeing gossip stories about her though on the internet and entertainment television shows. The news was almost always negative. Fame is hard to handle I guess.
apparently she thought she wasnt made to be in the spotlight. shed rather have a family and raise her kids
Yeah, I'm from the golden triangle area, or just outside of it. Growing up I was a Jimi Hendrix fanatic. As a result I became a fan of a lot of other rock musicians, like Morrison, and later, Cobain. I never could get into Janis' music though. But I respect the fact that others hold her in high esteem.
My dad went to school with them but he was 2 years ahead. G.W. Bailey (Lt. Harris from Police Academy) was also a student there. He was a year behind Janis and Jimmy.
If she weren't talented. . . would we care she died from her struggles half away around the world there are people still fighting that struggle around your block. I feel sorry for her friends and family but her death is no worse or better than the local crackhead on the block It was not so much a tragedy .. . . as an inevitability. [Eric Clapton's son falling out the hotel was a TRAGEDY!] Again . . I feel for her family and friends and I hope she is in a better place .. . . But . . .I cannot say I feel her death in a special way Rocket River
Very talented. I could listen to her entire album all the way through. Loved her music. Drugs were a problem.
I didnt like her music or her. Last concert, she was there late, stumbling, forgetting the lyrics, couldnt stand still, and people booed her. But I cant say Im glad, this is sad for her family and friends, so I respect that. She shouldnt be in the group with hendrix, morrison, cobain, they were a very important part of rock history. She went to rehab, but got out early.
Agreed. She does have talent I'll give her that, but honestly how is she any different from other UK soul singers like Joss Stone, Corrine Bailey Rae, Leona Lewis, and Adele? OH yeah she couldn't keep her s**t together. Now that's the tragedy. The question really is how far could her career have gone if she was sober.
What a terribly unfortunate downward spiral of a life. I never really listened to her music, but people say she was talented. It's a shame how drugs can wreck someone's life. Hopefully she enjoyed living it. I can't say I disagree with Azadre, though. I mean, she probably is better off for it. If you believe in an afterlife, then she must be there either partying the hell out of it, or getting clean (which beings about an interesting dichotomy in my head). If you don't believe in an afterlife, at least she is free from criticism, "bad decisions", and addictions.
This is one celebrity death I'm desensitized to. It took me even saying "I'm desensitized" to even get any mournful feelings going. Perhaps cuz I was not a fan of her music and the UK soul scene. I won't comment further too much on a performer I didnt feel intimate about. This is why I chose to not defend all the entertainment lifestyle excesses, even if thats what they WANT and thats the path they choose. On a real human level, its just sad that people would let themselves waste away like that even with all the support in the world behind them encouraging them not to.
Music isn't really a big contribution to society, especially the one she did. Some of you guys are actin like she was an angel. Whoa she had a Grammy, now that means something, we all know only true elgends and superb human beings get one. Amy was a bad rolemodel, seemed pretty slutty and left all the fans in the dirt that payed for her music and concerts with poor or no-performances. If you take a look at it realistically, the fans gave Amy money to buy drugs, cigs, alcohol and some DD-boobs. Seems hard but is the truth. Having talent doesn't mean people have to mourn, all kinds of effed up people have talents but that doesn't mean they're important or good to society.
In all honesty, this might be the single most idiotic thought I have ever seen on Clutchfans. Please, do us a favor and close your mouth.
Winehouse paved the way for all these other British soul singers. She was a revolutionary. If you follow the music business at all, you would understand her impact. She put British music back on the map. If not for Winehouse, you wouldn't have heard of Lily Allen, Duffy, Adele and all those other vocalists you listed. She achieved great things in her short time in the business. Yes, she could have achieved more, but her impact will last forever.
I don't think it's that dumb. In fact I think his post is pretty appropriate. Yes, music adds to society... But so does, well, everything. Music, reading, writing, math, science, medicine, art, photography, religion, economics, etc, etc. I guess if you had to rank them, music might be above average contributor... But you don't have to rank them. And saying someone has a Grammy, what have you done is a much more idiotic thing to say. I don't have a Grammy, either.
