I don't understand why people are hating on the translator so much. Translating on the fly (simultaneously listening, translating, and speaking at a normal talking pace) is VERY difficult.

Chinese and English grammar are different enough to require the translator to translate words out of order at times which can make the sentence come out awkward sometimes.

I am fluent in both Mandarin and English and I have lots of respect for the translator.

He sounds like ****. Translating isn't easy but that's why it's a professional job. Compare this dude to the guys who translate for Ichiro or Matsui, who sound like native speakers and can give texture to the nuances of what they're saying.

It's a problem when the translator is actually distracting. Check out the Q&A on the NBA site... the guy talks over Yao and the people asking the questions, when it's perfectly clear the Colin Pine will be translating both. He doesn't even know when to just be silent. It's just really unprofessional.

I'm sure in 5 years the Chinese will have caught up or surpassed the Japanese and Americans in this as well. Right now it's lacking.

He's giving a press conference in China. Why in the world would he speak English there?

Also, Chinese sentence structure is pretty different from English. It's hard to get the exact meaning especially if the speaker is using idioms.

I can understand Chinese, and Colin Pine was impressive in both Chinese and English. He caught the intonation and idioms quite well.

The only thing he didn't catch enough was his translation of "breath of fresh air" referring to the first time Yao scored 30 and had 16 rebounds in an NBA game. Yao actually said, it was like being underwater (referring to the pressure he was under) and finally coming up for air (realizing he had the talent level to play well in the NBA).

The other translator must be from the TV station. The UN hires translators who translate on the spot for their conferences, so I'm sure it's possible to do a creditable job translating on the fly. The guy's English was barely elementary level.

This is an embarassment to China. Considering there are more English speakers in China than in USA I'm sure they could have went Eenie Meenie Minie Mo and picked a translater 10 times better.

And to be honest most Western Press Agencies would have Chinese-speaking journalists and translators by the bunches...this is just ridiculous.

IMHO, the fool is the one who thinks the accent and broken grammar of a foreign speaker is funny. And the fool even finds it funny enough to start a r****ded thread on it.

IMHO, the fool is the one who can't spell r****ded correctly or doesn't even bother to proof read what he writes.

    The fool is you.
