OKC was rained out. They'll play a doubleheader with Albuquerque tomorrow, starting at 5:35 Mountain. Then, they will head home to host Memphis. Dallas Keuchel bounced back from a couple of shaky outings as Corpus began life after Jose Altuve with a 5-2 victory over Midland. He went 7 innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits, and struck out 7. Chris Hicks was called up to Corpus when Brad James was placed on the 7-day DL. Making his debut in the 8th, he allowed a hit and a walk in his inning. Jason Stoffel got the save in his first appearance with Corpus with a perfect 9th inning, fanning 1 in the process. This was his 14th save overall. Brandon Wikoff hit 3 singles. Jimmy Paredes and J.D. Martinez had RBI doubles in the 4th. Kody Hinze singled Martinez home one batter later. Martinez also had an RBI on a flyball force out, in which Jonathan Villar scored, but Paredes apparently misread the flight of the ball and was out at 2nd. Hooks hitters did not strike out tonight. No one, 1-9, struck out. Villar drew 2 of the 3 walks; Hinze had the other. Lancaster was doubled up by High Desert 10-5. Adam Bailey and Erik Castro drove in 2, and Jonathan Meyer drove in another. Andrew Robinson allowed 7 runs on 11 hits (2-run homer) in 4 innings, walking 1 and striking out 2. Lexington had been leading Charleston 3-0, but they allowed 4 in the 4th and 2 more in the 5th, and that lead was history. The Legends got 2 back in the 6th to get to 6-5, but that would be the final score. Delino Deshields went 2-3 with 2 RBI. He's now hitting .321 this month, after a .154 June. The hot streak that he's been on has seen his average jump to .222. Ben Heath, Jhonny Medrano, and Jay Austin drove in 1 each. Mike Foltynewicz lasted 4 innings, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits, walking 2 and striking out 3. Tri-City tied their game with Connecticut at 7 by scoring 2 in the 8th, then when the Tigers scored 2 in the 12th to take the lead, the ValleyCats answered with 2 to re-tie the game. But, the Tigers wouldn't have any of that, so they put up 6 in the 13th to run away with the game. ValleyCats lose, 15-9. Jacke Healey had a solo homer in the 2nd, his 2nd. He doubled his hit total for the season by going 2-7. Drew Muren and Bubby Williams went 4-7 and drove in 3 apiece. Neiko Johnson went 2-5, drew 3 walks, stole 3 bases, and scored twice. Matt Duffy went 2-5 with an RBI and scored 3 times. Brandon Meredith went 3-5 and scored twice. I really like Meredith... the power isn't there yet, but he's got such a great approach at the plate, and he looks like he can develop into a solid #2 hitter. Juri Perez went 4 innings, allowing 4 runs on 7 hits (solo homer), walking 3 and striking out 2. Kris Bueno was shellacked in the 13th, allowing 6 runs on 3 hits (grand slam), walking 4 and fanning 1. Greeneville was held to 2 hits as they were shut out 5-0 by Kingsport. Chase Davidson doubled, Chan Moon singled, and.... yep, that's about it. Luis Ordosgoitti is struggling a bit, and he only lasted 4 innings, allowing 6 hits and 4 runs, striking out 3. Ordosgoitti has been fairly consistent with the strikeouts; this is his 2nd 3 K game. He already has 2 games of 6 strikeouts, and 2 games of 7. The Gulf Coasters were also blanked 5-0, to the Marlins. Yonathan Mejia and Jean Carlos Batista each had 2 hits. Tanner Bushue, continuing his rehab assignment, fared much better in this one, but.... he still got the loss. Not his fault, as he pitched quite well. He went 3 innings, allowing 1 run on 2 hits and fanned 2. The Academy beat the Dodgers 8-6 as Jose... um, I mean, Teoscar Hernandez hit 2 homers. He went 3-5 with 5 RBI and scored 3 times. Like I said, he's put himself in a great position to come to America with his work this season. Pedro Coa and Mario Gonzalez drove in 1 each. Agapito Barrios allowed 4 runs on 3 hits in 5 2/3, walking 2 and striking out 2.
The Astros may be pumping up Barmes value going into the trade deadline. Playing a little hard to get might yield more in the eventual trade.
And once again, not really sure why the Giants put Sosa in the bullpen when he got to AAA??? Dude has good numbers as a starter...not so good as a bullpen guy.
OKC was swept in a doubleheader with Albuquerque today, losing 8-4 and 6-1. In game 1, the Redhawks had a 4-run 4th that constituted their runs. Anderson Hernandez had a 2-run triple. Tommy Manzella drove Hernandez home, and Oswaldo Navarro stole home. Brad Hennessey allowed 4 runs on 7 hits in 2 1/3, walking 1. Sergio Perez got the loss, allowing 2 runs on 2 hits in the 4th, walking 2. Xavier Cedeno made his debut in Game 2, and he took the loss, going 4 innings and allowing 2 runs on 6 hits (solo homer), striking out 4. Hernandez went 2-2 with the only RBI. In Henry Sosa's Corpus debut, he was aided by 2 Jonathan Gaston homers as the Hooks shut out Midland 6-0. Gaston had a 2-run homer in the 3rd and a 3-run homer in the 6th. The 2 blasts gave him 5 on the year. Chris Wallace had the other RBI on an out. Sosa allowed 4 hits, walked 1, and fanned 5 in his 7 innings. Arcenio Leon struck out the side in order in the 9th. Lancaster pounded High Desert 14-2. The Jethawks were powered by Jose Thompson, who went 4-5 with 4 RBI and scored twice, and David Flores, who bashed a 3-run homer in the 4th, his 8th. Jonathan Meyer, Adam Bailey, and Erik Castro drove in 2 each, and Castro had a solo homer, his 3rd. Andrew Simunic also drove in a run. Jose "Jekyll and Hyde/Home and Away" Cisnero continued his act, going 6 innings and allowing 2 runs on 2 hits (solo homer), walking 1 and striking out 11. Lexington dropped another game to Charleston, falling 8-3 in this one. Ben Heath hit a solo homer, his 2nd with Lexington and 7th overall. Delino DeShields went 3-4 with an RBI, and he has raised his average to .228. Ruben Alaniz went 6 innings, but didn't get a quality start, allowing 5 runs on 7 hits (solo homer), walking 1 and striking out 6. Tri-City was swept in a doubleheader to open a series with Connecticut, losing 4-2 and 3-2. Bubby Williams had the only RBI in game 1. Jonas Dufek pitched a 6-inning complete game, allowing 4 runs on 9 hits, striking out 4. In game 2, John Hinson and Matt Duffy drove in 1 each. Kyle Hallock went 5 innings, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits, walking 1 and striking out 5. Greeneville ran off 8 unanswered as they whipped Bristol 8-2. The White Sox scored 2 in the top of the 9th to make the game a little more respectable. Jesse Wierzbicki provided a 2-run homer in the 1st, his 2nd of the season. Jordan Scott and Luis Alvarez drove in 1 apiece. Ricardo Batista pitched 5 shutout innings, allowing 3 hits and 2 walks while fanning 6. The Gulf Coasters blew a lead in the 9th to the Cardinals, leading to a 6-5 defeat. All 5 runs were scored in the bottom of the 6th. Justin Shults had an RBI single, Kyle Redinger cleared the bases with a double. And finally, Jose Fernandez sent him home with a single. Francis Ramirez allowed an unearned run on 3 hits in 5, striking out 6. Blake Ford couldn't close the door, as he allowed both runs in the 9th. The Academy was blanked by the Pirates 2-0. They only had 3 hits in the game. One was a triple by Teoscar Hernandez. Ambiorix De Leon went 7 innings, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits, walking 2 and striking out 5.
DD Jr he has been red hot this month, his numbers while not overally impressive does show some promise at a very early age. I hope he finishes strong and shows he is ready for Lancaster and hopefully CC next season.
It isn't unusual for a HS prospect to struggle early. They is a big jump from what they see in HS to what they see in pro ball. I'm not overly concerned about that. I'm far more concerned that we drafted a guy with the 8th pick that almost nobody sees with the potential to be great. If he turns out like his dad, that is fine, but you want somebody better than Delino Deshields with a top 10 pick. Anyway, unless his hot streak continues through the end of his season, or shows improvement in winter ball, there is no reason to advance him to Lancaster to start next season, and certainly no need to get him to CC at 19. Obviously if he shows he can handle it, you go ahead and do it, but there is no need to rush him. Especially if Altuve can handle the job.
The 2 guys most of us wanted over DD were Josh Sale and Michael Choice. Michael Choice was great in short season A ball and has been very impressive in advanced A ball (though it is the Cally league). He was drafted out of college, and is 21. Josh Sale is putting up numbers similar to DD, but is a year older, and playing in rookie ball.
OKC welcomed Memphis to Bricktown, and took the opener 5-2. Anderson Hernandez went 2-4 with 3 RBI. Koby Clemens and Drew Locke drove in 1 each. Lucas Harrell allowed 2 runs on 4 hits in 7 innings, walking 4 and striking out 3. Corpus got absolutely pounded by Frisco, as Tommy Mendonca mashed 3 homers in a 19-4 massacre. Hooks pitchers were taken deep 8 times tonight. The offense consisted of 4 solo homers, from Jimmy Paredes (10; 3rd), Kody Hinze (3, 25; 4th), Chris Wallace (5, 19; 4th), and Jonathan Villar (5, 9; 5th). Jonnathan Aristil went 1 1/3, allowing 7 runs on 8 hits (2 solo homers) and walked 1. More fireworks at the Hangar as Lancaster fell to High Desert 15-10. Miguel Arrendell went 3-3 with a solo homer, his 3rd, drew 3 walks, and scored 4 times. Erik Castro hit a 2-run homer in the 2nd, his 4th. Jonathan Meyer and David Flores also drove in 2. Adam Bailey drove in 1. Zach Grimmett went 4 2/3, allowing 7 runs on 7 hits (2-run homer), walking and fanning 2. Trailing Charleston 4-3 entering the 7th, Lexington scored 2 to take a 5-4 lead, and the would go on to win by the same score. Bryce Lane scored on a wild pitch and Delino DeShields had the go-ahead RBI single. Lane, Enrique Hernandez, and Ben Orloff also drove in a run. Luis Cruz allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 7 hits in 6 1/3. He walked 2 and struck out 6. Tri-City broke a 2-2 tie with Connecticut in the 8th when Matt Duffy scored on an error and Miles Hamblin reached base safely. The ValleyCats would end up winning 3-2 in a pretty ugly one. The combined line was 5-7-5, with 4 hits for the VCs, 3 for the Tigers, 2 errors for the VCs, and 3 for Connecticut. Duffy was also part of the other scoring play, an error which resulted in 2 runs for the ValleyCats in the 5th. Yes, all of their runs were scored off errors. Which means no one had an RBI. Euris Quezada was ineffective (or effectively wild?) in his 4 2/3, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits, but walked 5 and only struck out 2. Dayan Diaz picked up the mess, tossing 3 1/3 innings of no-hit relief, walking 2 and fanning 5. Trailing 3-0 to Bristol after stretch time, Greeneville suddenly awakened, putting 6 on the board to take the lead. The White Sox would tie the game in the 8th, but the Appy Astros quickly broke the tie in the bottom half, leading to a 7-6 victory. Jordan Scott cleared the bases with a triple. Josh Magee drove him home with a single. Lastly, Jesse Wierzbicki hit his 3rd homer in 4 games, a 2-run shot. Darwin Rivera provided the go-ahead sac fly in the 8th. Tyson Perez allowed 3 runs (2 earned) on 8 hits in 5 1/3, striking out 3. Steve Martin blew the save, allowing the 3 runners he inherited in the 8th from Danilo Del Rio to score. All 3 were unearned. Rivera's sac fly got him the win. The Gulf Coasters lost 2-1 to the Mets in a game in which they were held to 2 hits. Yonathan Mejia tripled and came home when Chris Epps grounded out. Kelvin Vizcaino had the other hit. Freddy Tiburcio allowed 2 runs on 2 hits (no homers) in 5, walking 5 and fanning 3. The Academy was held to 3 hits in a 9-1 loss to the Cardinals. Teoscar Hernandez scored the lone run. No RBIs here. 7 runs for the Cardinals in the 3rd was the killer. Luis Abad allowed 4 runs (2 earned) on only 1 hit in 2 2/3. He walked 2 and struck out 3. Jandel Gustave came in and gave up 3 unearned runs without getting an out.
Looks like the Yordany Ramirez experiment at pitcher is over, as he has been released. Murilo Gouvea was called up from Lexington to take his spot in Lancaster.
Busy weekend, so I've been away from the keyboard. Let's recap the weekend's action, shall we? Starting with Saturday's games, OKC defeated Memphis 7-4 as they scored 4 in the 6th and 3 in the 7th for the win. Oswaldo Navarro cleared the bases with a pinch-hit double and Brian Bogusevic went 2-4 with 2 RBI. Nelson Figueroa allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits in 6 innings, walking 4 and striking out 5. Corpus fell 9-5 in their game with Frisco. Jonathan Villar had a solo homer (6; 10 overall) in the 3rd. Kody Hinze hit his 4th, and 26th overall, a solo shot also in the 3rd. Jonathan Gaston had an RBI, and Emerson Frostad had a 2-run double. Ross Seaton went 5 1/3, allowing 7 runs (3 earned) on 9 hits, walking 2 and fanning 2. Jason Stoffel allowed 2 runs on 3 hits in the 8th, striking out 1. Lancaster lost 4-3 to Lake Elsinore, despite holding the Storm to 4 hits. Erik Castro smacked a solo homer in the 5th, his 5th. Adam Bailey and Federico Hernandez drove in 1 each. Robby Donovan allowed 4 runs on 3 hits (solo homer) in 6 innings, walking 3 and striking out 9. Lexington walked off 7-6 losers to Savannah, as Brian Streilein couldn't close the door, allowing 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th to the Sand Gnats. Jhonny Medrano and Bryce Lane went back-to-back in the 3rd, Medrano hitting a 2-run homer, his 3rd, and Lane with a solo shot, his 3rd. Ben Orloff, Mike Kvasnicka, and Jay Austin drove in 1 each. Carlos Quevedo allowed 3 runs on 7 hits (2-run homer) in 5 1/3, walking 1 and striking out 2. Tri-City was dropped 6-1 by Staten Island. Bubby Williams had the lone RBI. I mistakenly reported that Murilo Gouvea had been promoted to Lancaster from Lexington. Turns out he was actually demoted. He allowed 5 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits in 2 2/3, fanning 3. Bubby Williams had the lone RBI. Greeneville was smacked around 11-4 by Bristol. Jose Monzon had 2 RBI and Jose Vargas had the other RBI. Jamaine Cotton went 2 innings, allowing 1 run on 4 hits, walking and striking out 1. Rod Quintero allowed 5 runs on 4 hits (grand slam) in only 1 2/3, walking 1 and fanning 2. The Gulf Coasters and the Academy were off on Saturday. Sunday: Andy Van Hekken was brilliant, combining with Wesley Wright on a 5-hitter as OKC blanked Memphis 7-0. AVH allowed 3 hits in his 7 innings, walked 2, and struck out 8. Wright allowed 2 hits and fanned 2 in his 2. J.B. Shuck, Brian Bogusevic, Anderson Hernandez, Luis Durango, Oswaldo Navarro, and J.R. Towles drove in 1 each. Van Hekken also singled, drew 2 walks, and scored twice. He wants that call-up in the worst way... Corpus was silenced in their 2-1 loss to Frisco, despite 10 hits. Jonathan Villar had the only RBI, which was in the 9th. Erick Abreu allowed 2 solo homers, 3 other hits, and struck out 8. Chris Hicks went 5 up and 5 down. Lancaster lost another 1-run game to Lake Elsinore, losing this one 5-4. Austin Wates, in his first game off the DL, doubled twice, had an RBI, and scored twice. David Flores drove in 2, and Jonathan Meyer had the other RBI. Jake Buchanan allowed 5 runs on 7 hits (2 solo homers, 1 2-run homer) in 6, walking 1 and striking out 4. Lexington was doubled up 4-2 by Savannah. 3 hits for the Legends; 2 from Roberto Pena and the other from Mike Kvasnicka. Tyler Burnett had the only RBI. Alex Sogard allowed 4 runs on 8 hits in 4 2/3, fanning 4. Tri-City got a brilliant start from Nick Tropeano in their 2-0 win over Staten Island, as he, Mitchell Lambson, and Ryan Cole combined on a 4-hitter. Tropeano allowed 2 hits, walked 1, and struck out 9 in his 6 innings. Lambson went 2, allowed 1 hit, walked 2, and fanned 1. Cole got the save, allowing 1 hit in the 9th. John Hinson hit his first homer, a solo shot in the 5th. Matt Duffy had an RBI in the 1st. Greeneville was defeated 4-3 by Johnson City, and the RBIs were provided from Ruben Sosa, Garen Wright, and Darwin Rivera. Chris Lee allowed 3 runs on 5 hits (2-run homer) in 5 innings, fanning 4. Jeremiah Meiners got the loss in relief, allowing the go-ahead run in the 8th. The Gulf Coasters took down the Nationals 8-7 as they got a 3-run homer from Chris Epps in the 7th. He finished with 4 RBI. Jose Fernandez had 3 RBI, and Jarrod McKinney had the other RBI. Enderson Franco allowed 4 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits in 5, fanning 3. Pedro Gomez allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits in 1 2/3 of relief, but got the win. The Academy was on their All-Star Break. Franny Polanco caught 3 innings and singled in his only PA. Juan Santana was at short for the last 3 innings, turning a DP and grounding into one.
If he could have just made a little bit of regular contact at the plate, what coulda been. He's one of the most exciting CF'ers I've ever had the pleasure to watch. Picture Bourn with Clemente's arm. His glove said "Bad Mother ****er" on it.
He was fun to watch at RR. Dude has speed. I remember seeing what would have been close doubles for most become stand up triples for him.
I think Jonathan Villar is beginning to show why Heck/Wade wanted him in the Oswalt deal. Tonight 3-4 Triple/Single/Homer He was been on FIREEEEE lately and his raised his OPS to .740.
OKC beat Memphis 8-2 to earn the sweep, as J.B. Shuck went 2-5 with 3 RBI. Collin DeLome went 2-5 with 2 RBI, and Brian Bogusevic, Anderson Hernandez, and Koby Clemens added one apiece. Sergio Perez went 5 innings, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits (2-run homer), striking out 1. Corpus exploded for 6 runs in the 4th on their way to a 9-3 win over Frisco. As rockets934life stated (wish I could rep him), a huge night for Jonathan Villar as he went 3-5 with a triple, single, a solo homer in the 6th, 3 RBI, and scored 3 times. 7 with Corpus, 11 on the year. JVO drove in 2, and Jimmy Paredes, J.D. Martinez, and T.J. Steele drove in 1 each. Dallas Keuchel had a bare minimum quality start, allowing 7 hits (solo homer), walking 1, and striking out 1. Looks like Xavier Cedeno's promotion was a one-off, as he is back in a Hooks uniform once again. He pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief tonight, walking 1 and fanning 1. Wow, a Lancaster game finished before 11 tonight. Guess what happened? They dropped another 5-4 game to Lake Elsinore. Adam Bailey beat out Chris Wallace to become the 2nd player in the organization to hit 20 homers with a solo homer in the 3rd. He added another RBI, while Andrew Simunic and David Flores chipped in with 1 each. Andrew Robinson got the bare minimum quality start, allowing 6 hits, 4 walks, and striking out 5. Lexington blew a 4-2 lead by allowing Savannah to score 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th, losing 5-4. Ben Heath had a solo homer, his 3rd with Lexington and #8 on the year. Mike Kvasnicka went 2-4 with 3 RBI. Mike Foltynewicz allowed 4 runs on 7 hits in 5, fanning 5. In a day game, Tri-City lost 2-1 to Staten Island, as Travis Smink allowed the Yankees to score a run in the bottom of the 8th. Matt Duffy had the only RBI on an out. Juri Perez allowed 1 run on 4 hits in 6 innings, striking out 8. Greeneville was roughed up by Johnson City, as they allowed the Cardinals to score all 8 runs from the 1st to the 3rd. Jesse Wierzbicki went 2-2 with the only RBI in the 8-2 loss. Luis Ordosgoitti got roughed up, allowing 6 runs (5 earned) on 7 hits in only 2 innings, without striking out or walking a batter. The Gulf Coasters were held to 3 hits in a 2-1 loss to the Marlins. Jean Carlos Batista had the only RBI on an out. Tanner Bushue made his 3rd rehab start, going 4 innings, allowing 6 hits, 1 run, and striking out 2. Adrian Houser pitched very well, but the only blemish he had gave him the loss. He pitched 4 1/3 innings of relief, allowing 2 hits, 3 walks, and struck out 4, but he allowed the go-ahead run in the top of the 9th. The Academy was off today.
