Hey so there is a chance that I may take a 6 month break after graduating my undergrad and before starting work or going into graduate school etc.

I feel like I want to do something while I still have the chance and before work or other responsibilities prevent me from doing it.

That said, I need suggestions. I want to travel to places I have never been before. I'm thinking about traveling all across Europe...but traveling that way can be expensive.

I'm thinking about joining the Peace Corps but can I just do it for 6 months? Don't want to do it for any longer than that. Also, how long does the application process take?

Basically, something similar to the Peace Corps or Teach for America etc. would be something I'd be interested in.

    Any suggestions?

The Peace Corps is typically a 2 year commitment, since the first 3 months of assignment is usually training. Also, as of right now, the application process for recent graduates is close to a full year. Have you thought about teaching English overseas somewhere?

yeah man but I need to find a reputable program that is about 6 months and no longer. I've also been searching for volunteer abroad programs, but again they need to be reputable, don't wanna run into complications especially abroad...

I would say teach English in China if you can. They'll get you a contract for up to 6 months and place you in one of their "smaller" cities which usually have a population of 6-8 million. They'll provide you with boarding and compensate you well enough.

I only know this from reading a thread on the bodybuilding forums but the guy there works 2 days a week and makes enough money to dine out everyday and is enjoying his experience. No degree is required apparently but of course it does help. Also you wouldn't need to be fluent in Mandarin or Cantonese or anything either.

I got a few friends who run the local chapter up here in the frigid north, so I might be able to get you hookups if you're really interested. They're really looking more for business students, but you can still get on the development/education side. It's basically an internship where you travel to a developing country and do work, with some costs covered. There's something like 110 countries, and you choose the country. There's a selection process...but I may be able to help just a little bit about that, provided the Houston group is in touch with the rest of AIESEC. Either way, the process isn't too hard.

I know off-hand that one friend worked with a micro-loan type bank in Ghana, and another worked with an accounting group in Beijing (and got mad amounts of p***y).

So yeah, it kinda fits all three criteria.

you know the theory, women are like scotch

the crafting and antique convention is like drinking 50 year Glenfidditch, if only such a thing existed.

    i wholeheartedly support this idea.

Hey I am a business student (finance). I'm really interested in this, my graduation is either going to be in may 2012 or december 2012.

When should I start this application? Now? when I am close to graduating? etc.

    6 month break

Hey if you're thinking about travel and you've only got 6 months then there are loads of travel and volunteer programs you could do that are a bit closer to home; South and Central America have loads of options like community work and working with animals (http://www.realgap.com/South America). Or if you want to work there are programs like this http://www.realgap.com/China-Paid-Teaching-with-TEFL where you can get the TEFL qualification and then teach for 5 months. Good luck!
