A guy at my job was doing the online Masters in EE program at USC, and the company was paying for it. He asks management if he could work remote and move to CA and finish his masters on campus. Management said ok... Man, he packed up his stuff, took a month off to go on a family trip to India, then moved to CA, partied at USC for a year, finished his masters, and found another job on the west coast.
He didn't have to pay back anything. The company gives them stock for completing the masters, but they can't cash it in until after serving 3 more years with the company. This happened about 3 years ago. I will say that today it is much harder for this kind of arrangement to be made and would most likely be denied in most cases. This is one of the Dow companies, so they have billions to spend.
I sort of agree with this article, being 30 years old myself. But companies like this need to be careful. We went through this before during the dot com bubble in the late ninties and early 2000s. The whole "let's have fun" while we work kinda thing don't really work well unless your company is raking in huge profit or has a huge profit base to begin with. Companies like Google and Facebook may be able to get away with this and Microsoft did something similar back in the 90s, but they kinda stopped once they realize they've lost their competitive edge.
+1, or actually +12 for all the staff I've supervised who were reduced to tears by even the most gentle and constructive of criticism. People really want a performance review with no helpful hints for doing "even better?" Yup, for the age group in question, that's about it. Oh well. The parenting pendulum will hopefully swing back the other way, and we'll get another obedient, flinching, and largely silent generation.
I don't know the average salary, and even if I did, probably wouldn't be smart to reveal it (probably revealed too much as is, looking back at this thread). But you can probably make some reasonable assumptions that I'm guessing would be fairly accurate. The video I was talking about earlier: <object width="384" height="356" classid="clsid27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" id="ep"><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /><param name="movie" value="http://i.cdn.turner.com/money/.element/apps/cvp/4.0/swf/cnn_money_384x216_embed.swf?context=embed&videoId=/video/news/2011/07/19/n_millennials_motivation.cnnmoney" /><param name="bgcolor" value="#000000" /><embed src="http://i.cdn.turner.com/money/.element/apps/cvp/4.0/swf/cnn_money_384x216_embed.swf?context=embed&videoId=/video/news/2011/07/19/n_millennials_motivation.cnnmoney" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" bgcolor="#000000" allowfullscreen="true" allowscriptaccess="always" width="384" wmode="transparent" height="356"></embed></object>
Do you know what I think should motivate "millennials" (what a stupid freaking word)? Being able to support yourself. How about not being unemployed? Jesus, do we have to freaking baby everyone? "Millennials" can't work without fun? How about, "millennials" won't have a job if they don't do what they are supposed to do? Holy stupid.
What a regrettable policy. The Generation Y youngsters were raised on a new brand of soccer, where: <iframe width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/J-GkwIRbLw8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Working in SoCal, can say laid back attitude is present in a lot of companies there. And I'm FOR it big time. But the key is LAID BACK and CASUAL, not around the clock swinging on chandeliers. "Something they can put on Facebook!" is a SUSPECT concept to run a business with. "Here's a pic of me on Facebook AGGRESSIVELY involved in a business deal" seems an oxymoron. To me the millennial thing is all of the "COOL" culture finally permeating into busines. Its having companies be self conscious of the "cool" way to be. Getting to one up others saying "Well WE actually get to do __ at OUR OFFICE" to feel some sense of employee focused altruistic vision.
Ignorant way to look at things. I guess it depends on what you do... but being able to enjoy work increases productivity exponentially. You know why Google has all that cool stuff on their campus? So people WANT to be at work. In my profession, I don't need to work 40+ every week, I just get things done. If that means a 50hr week so be it, if that means a 30hr week why should I be strung from a noose? And yes. People like me must be babied (I guess), because guess what, if you're not making me happy I'll go somewhere else. I don't have to be anywhere, I have value and can choose. I don't care how bad the economy is, companies still have to compete for the best talent. Work smart not hard. Have fun. Y'all old schoolers can have fun with your heart attack at 45. Suckers.
So you need to talk to millennial once a month cuz they demand it. And when you DO talk to them, they'll be sensitive and difficult and want to engage in constant negotiation to build back up their esteem. I want you to talk to me, so I can complain back. Without you getting upset. Generally thats called being SPOILED and WHINEY. But I guess defintions have changed to where that is being self-sufficient. Thats very, innovative and "fresh". Something NEVER perceived by previous generations cuz they were muzzled and sat on their hands. And all they ever did was take what they given without contesting ... Can justify feeling the needing to speak up by saying thats a NECESSARY attribute with a lot of anti-union movements going on. Each person has to speak for themselves if they can't be represented or if they can't COLLECTIVELY bargain.
