For the price maybe, but the more I think about it...they can't just say 'no, we're going to pass on Nnamdi and count on getting Joseph/Taylor and Weddle (or another safety) with that money' Free agency is a crapshoot, so you might as well line up your targets in order and go for them. There's no guarantee that we'll get one player of need, much less two.
That's what I'm thinking as well. Having said that, if it's Sensabaugh + Aso/Joseph/Taylor/Rogers, I think everyone knows which one of those 4 to root for. I just hope if we do get Aso that he stays healthy and productive and we somehow figure out how to defend the other half of the field - regardless if it's by better corner play or more pressure on the QB.
The cap is apparently going to be just short of $123 million. Assuming your figure is correct, expect major casualties if they want to sign Namdi.
So, if we cut Slaton and Amobi, we can offer him 9 million guaranteed, with tons of reachable incentives, since there is a decent size bonus allotment. I think theres possibly going to be a couple million dollar exception, also.
DeMeco cleared by the doctors. http://twitter.com/#!/DRyans59/status/93050173625868289 I hope the Texans take it easy with DeMeco. Put him on PUP at the start of training camp and let him work up to going full speed. I think he only needs a couple a preseason games to get used to the new system.
I believe Okoye is due $2.95 million this season. I don't see anyway the Texans will pay that for a backup D-lineman. Either he takes a pay cut or he's gone, imo.
Meaning there is no exception? Or that it is 120 million and you can use the exception? (Which is what I thought)
Sorry. That wasn't very clear. The cap is 120 mil, and there is a roughly 3 mil exception, as you said. I just wanted to make it clear that the 123 mil is going to be a pretty immovable figure. There aren't going to be ways to get around it, or stretch the cap situation. There is also, apparently, a chance that the owners' contrabution to the retired players may count against the cap, which would shave about 1.5 mil from each team's cap. I really think their cap situation is going to be a lot tighter than people believe. But I also think that is true of about half the teams. For instance, I believe the Jets are completely screwed. I think quite a few very good players will end up cut around the league.
Which, I think is interesting. It will either bring more parity to the league, by forcing the new free agents to sign with lesser teams with more cap space, or it will create a call to up cap space.
Is there a list of all the Texans salaries? Also, what is believed to happen to teams over that 120+3M cap?
Ding dong the lockout is (almost) dead! The amount of parity in the league is going to get even bigger with the chaotic and short free agency period, and the reduced salary cap will send a good amount of talent flooding back out into the market. If you're a fan of a perennial also-ran, this year should excite the hell out of you. Best chance for a cinderella story ever.
Almost dead - but they're annoying the piss out of me - this should have been wrapped up and signed a full week ago. At least we're all at the point where we can be reasonably sure only the offseason and HoF game are going to get crunched. Will still be interested to see how many players come back woefully out of shape and unable to go. Haynesworth has to be the leading bet. I agree that Slaton and Okoye need to be cut pronto. What's the contract situation on McManis, Barber, and Molden? To the "Can Jackson be saved by Phillips" here's one more bit of info to put into the "uphill battle" list: http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2011/worst-cornerback-charting-stats-2010 Scary.
Those three can't be making much seeing as how they were all late round draft picks. Molden could be slated to make a fair chunk this year though, and he absolutely needs to go.
Don't you DARE suggest cutting Antwaun Molden! He's been battle-fightin' for this team since the day we drafted him. Sure, he has yet to defend a single pass in 3 years.....but he did have 5 tackles last season. And 1 the year before (assisted).
Teams are afraid to throw at him, he's a keeper  Imagine pairing him with Nnamdi, that'd eliminate two-thirds of the field!
