Hmm...some of the characters that die you might not recognize, so make sure you can attach the face to the name. And then make sure you focus a lot on Half Blood Prince, because that does set up Deathly Hallows. If you don't know what happens in Prince you'll be really lost.

Thanks for the reply. May watch Prince and then part 1 before going to see this one then. I'm not against watching harry potter just not all of them in a week's time.

Yeah watching Prince and part I are sufficient to know what's going on in part II IMO.

I think to anyone that would claim Harry Potter is just for kids needs to watch Deathly Hallows Pts I and II together...because in its entirety is truly one of the most epic fantasy films of all time. It ranks up there with Empire Strikes Back and Return of the King.

After watching it really makes sense to split this up into 2 parts, and even then this half still felt very rushed to get things back to Hogwarts. Not that I was dissatisfied with the Gringotts scene, because for the most part I think it stayed true to the book minus a few missing pieces.

But I was disappointed with how they glossed over stuff that wasn't Harry-Voldemort specific. The Aberforth reveal felt like a bigger impact in the book, and here he had maybe 5 minutes of screen time. I was looking forward to the King's Cross scene with Dumbledore as much as I was Snape's pensieve part, and it ended up being sort of confusing.
Here, Aberforth and Snape only touched on the subject, but in the book, Dumbledore's history, Harry's doubts regarding Dumbledore and whether he was being used was a big side plot, and without it the King's Crossing scene was just a peptalk.

It is sure epic, but it is no where close to being in the same ballpark as Empire and LOTR, imo.

Hell, it isn't even the same sport...

I guess time will tell. But all three films (and I'm still counting PtI and II together here) feature climactic fights between good and evil, epic battle sequences, cutting edge special effects (for its time), strong characters and a quality cast to breathe life into them, deep themes, incredible set design and visual palette.

    Strong characters? Hmmm...

In the books, certainly. I have a hard time putting the Potter characters as represented by Rupert Grint, Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe up in the Empire/LOTR range. Have you really felt moved in Harry Potter?

Have you forgotten how damn good those two films were that you just compared Potter to? ;)

I saw the movie earlier today, 3D, surprised not as much people showed up, though for a weekday morning show, I guess it was a good turnout.

Although I'm not freakishly obsessed about the Potter universe, I have watched every movie in it's debut weekend. I liked it, but I think I spoiled much of it by reading the wikipedia plot summaries ahead of viewing... and having not read any of the books, I was a little disappointed by the final encounter and epilogue. But this only motivates me to read the books and learn the intricacies of each character and the missing details from the movies.

Overall, capping off a decade of epicness, 9.5/10

I wanna read the books too, but get discouraged every time I see how thick it is. Needless to say I was never much of reader. It's like 5000 pages and no pictures!

I hope to catch this movie soon, but after the whole craze has died down.

You'd be surprised how many people out there (late 20's, early 30's males, mostly) still criticize it as being "stupid kids books." Some people just have no imagination.

Ha well don't get me wrong. I love Empire and Return of the King. And I'm not saying Hallows is better than them. But I certainly think it deserves to be in their class and that the Harry Potter series belongs with them as well.

As for the characters, I think of all three movies, Han Solo is probably gonna be the most iconic. In fact Star Wars in general is gonna have the more memorable characters. The three leads in HP may not be on the same level as Luke, Han and Leia or Frodo, Gandalf and Aragorn, but Dumbledore and Snape I think hold their own. Still the performances in Deathly Hallows I think are pretty inspired. I was definitely right their for their moments of happiness and pain and suffering.

I read the wiki plots of all the books up to Prince and watched Prince tonight. It was entertaining. I've only seen 2 films now but I have a pretty good idea of the Harry Potter universe and it just doesn't pull me in anywhere close to Rings or Star Wars. I am curious as to what happens in these last 2 movies though.

I dunno, I'm a slow reader. But I have heard people speeding straight through it quickly. Is it the big font?

I think the fastest I've read a novel was almost 2 weeks. That's pretty slow.

that's pretty fast, the last book i read willingly was a... goosebumps... took me a damn week to finish that sucker, i think i could have done it in 5 days but it was the type where u could choose your own ending...

jokes aside, people who say "easy to read", its meant for actual readers, people like you and i dont particularly enjoy reading, thus, almost nothing is easy to read, although i have no trouble spending countless hours reading random entries in wikipedia

I'm catching the 9:45 show at Edwards tomorrow morning, can't wait
Its very easy to read. I have always hated reading my entire life. But once I got started on the Harry Potter books, I could never put em down. I would read 200 pages in bed a night which is astonishing for someone that has never read in his spare time outside this series.

Damn man 200 pages for one night is beasting! I think the most I read was like 100ish and that felt like I just finished a marathon. Even treated myself to some ice cream I was so proud.

I can read random wikipedia and ancient history entries all day too. I think it's because the fact that you could physically see the book, see how thick it is and get discouraged.

I think I'll pick up the HP books once I see this last movie. Give it a try.

Trust me though, the HP books are a fast read. Its nothing like reading LOTR or something like that. There are parts of Book 5 & 6 that are a bit slow, but it you can easily read the first 5 books in a week and 6 & 7 in another week,
