Anyone else tried this out yet?

I'm trying it out now and it seems pretty bad ass. Their inventory for songs for the free subscription is pretty large.

If you didn't get an invite, you can make an account using these steps:

If you do that you're limited to 20 hours of streaming.

    But yeah, it's insanely awesome.

Spotify Invitations Include Unlimited Music, But Not for Long

The first invitations sent out to users of the Spotify music service include unlimited music, Spotify representatives confirmed Thursday. But in a few weeks, the company will pare that down.

Spotify didn't exactly clarify what the service offered in its press release announcing the service on Thursday. "With an invite, enjoy on-demand, buffer-free access to over 15 million songs on your computer, great social features, manage your own music files through Spotify, and sync with your cellphone or iPod," the company said. "Features occasional advertising."

But, for now, the service does offer unlimited music streaming, a Spotify representative said.

Why is this important? Because in the United Kingdom, France, Spain, and the other European companies Spotify serves, the service comes with a number of caveats attached to "Spotify Open," the free Spotify service there. In other words, U.S. users are currently being offered a better deal than European users, at least for a limited time.

If you have been able to download the free version of Spotify - either via an invitation or the social media ranking service Klout (whose perk has been temporarily put on hold) - the version of Spotify you'll see does not have any counter or time limits attached to it.

"After a few weeks, Spotify Free will be the same as the free service in Europe," the Spotify representative said.

But exactly when this will take place, or if the free service will have exactly the same limitations as European users, isn't quite clear. "There wil be at some point limits to that [free] service," the Spotify representative said, when asked to clarify.

What limits could there be? Spotify's Spotify Open FAQ on its European site provides a guide.

"When you open your account you receive 20 hours free streaming time - that's roughly equivalent to to 25 albums of music," according to the Spotify Open FAQ. "For the first six months, you will then receive 5 additional hours free streaming time every week. The extra 5 hours is added on roughly the same day of the week, and time of day that you created your Spotify account. If you do not use all of this streaming time each week, it will be saved up, to a maximum of 20 hours."

"After 6 months, your free streaming has to be limited further," Spotify added. "The weekly streaming allocation becomes 2.5 hours, and the maximum saved time will be 10 hours. In addition, each individual track can only be streamed 5 times in total. We hope that this will still give you a great opportunity to share and discover new music, and to keep your musical options wide open."

Here's where it gets a bit confusing: Spotify's initial invitations to its Spotify Free U.S. service include unlimited streaming, the key capability of its $4.99/mo Unlimited version. Spotify Unlimited eliminates both time limits on streaming music the in-app advertising. Spotify is also offering reviewers Premium subscriptions to test out, which normally cost $9.99/mo - meaning that they're not going to see the free version that most users will try out. The Premium tier offers offline modes and the ability to stream music to a mobile phone.

As for the frequency of the ads, I can't say with certainty. I've streamed a few songs at random, manually selecting each one. I've only experienced one ad, for Coca-Cola, which popped up and took up a good chunk of my monitor window.

So here's the bottom line, if you have a free invitation to Spotify, enjoy it; what will be offered to you and other users in a few weeks will be much more limited.

This is mighty reasonable. That is easily one new CD a week. And if I listen to it for more than 5 times, I should really buy it (used that is).

Groovehsark does not host its own music.

Since GS hosts its own music, CDs should not be missing tracks and all tracks should have the same quality.

Spotify costs $5 a month for unlimited access, initially.

Rhapsody cost $10 a month for unlimited access.

Rhapsody may have to lower their price, to not lose business to Spotify.

    Poking around a bit ...

Napster offers a $5/month plan, and a $10 plan with Mobile support (whatever that means).

Spotify is $10 a month for mobile access though. For me, I spend most of my usage on my phone so it's a toss up. I'll likely switch to Spotify from Rhapsody sheerly because Rhapsody sucks. I'm not a fan of their iPhone app at all.

I VPN'd into my London office and signed up. Trying it out right now. Not exactly why it's supposed to be so awesome. I guess it has a lot of choices but then again I don't know what the other streaming services like Rhapsody offers.

even though I know nothing about these 'music rental' scamming services... at least Zune pass lets you keep 10 songs a month...

Spotify, despite being the 'unattainable' euro-only software for over a year, seems to be nothing more than a well polished grooveshark

I don't get the hype, renting sucks

I don't get why you think 'renting' sucks. Do you have cable or satellite? Do you own those TV shows and movies you watch on there? No, you pay a monthly fee to get a bunch of entertainment.
$5-10 a month gets you a lot more access to music than buying it. Of course stealing it gets you just as much access for less money but more work.

    I haven't had cable/satellite since 2004.

$10/month adds up and over time it won't be cost effective

I totally see myself ending streaming content completely if possible. Of course there still will be stuff that's streaming only, but as bandwidth increases, the data cap will remain fixed. And I can already see these blood sucking companies nickle and dime-ing us in the immediate future.

Besides, what's so bad about owning? At least Zune Pass tosses us a bone.

Nothing bad about owning. Just how many songs can you get for that amount? At 99 cents that's just 10 songs a month. Granted it's yours forever but you better choose well because that's all you get.
What's so scammy about streaming services?

If you have a Windows phone it is actually pretty worth it. Plus, it combos as a media server such that you can push content to your xbox or media connected TV...

Also, the $10 a month goes to something like 7-8 if you buy a pass for a year instead of month to month...

I have been using it for years, before it was out in public. I use it every day. My ex-girlfriend was one of the co-founder's girlfriend...until she met me.
