Don't even think of breaking the law. The cops are the toughest in the world. Spoiler (I'm in the great place to visit, but wouldn't wanna live there camp.)
As others have said, Truly Med in the Mission is awesome, except on Tuesdays and Fridays when they only have chicken, and no lamb. The lamb is WAAAYY better. There is a lot of good Mexican food in the Mission. But, if you want Tex Mex, learn how to make it at home. Same goes for BBQ. Although, there is a pretty decent bbq place in Pacifica called Gorilla BBQ. Living in Daly city is a good way to save a little money. Cheaper than most neighborhoods and towns near the city. When I lived in the city, I hated the never ending parking tickets, towings, paying for parking garages, valets, etc. But, the best thing about the bay area is all of the stuff to do near SF. Not necessarily in SF itself. Mountain biking, surfing, wine country, Tahoe, camping, redwoods, snowboarding, skiing, etc. If you don't have a car, you will wish you did on the weekends. Everything except ethnic foods in ethnic neighborhoods is expensive as hell here. Shopping at Asian markets and Mexican markets is much cheaper than the chain grocers. Trader Joes is the best bang/quality for the dollar in the chains. Safeway blows. Embrace stuff you can do for free like going to parks, beach, hiking, etc. There's so much to do around that hobbies can get expensive. Good luck. Oh yea, get a parking space near your house/apt. What it costs monthly will pay for itself in parking ticket and towing savings. Not to mention, the peace of mind of not having to wake up at 5:00 AM to move your car because the God Damned street sweeper is coming for the 3rd time of the week.
I would avoid living in Daly City, as you don't get to enjoy any of the benefits of being in the city: i.e. parks, neighborhood bars, no car needed, etc. Also, it's hell trying to catch a cab out there - i.e. you can't just walk outside and hail a cab at all hours of the day, and cab drivers a lot of times will refuse to take someone down there at 2AM on a Fri/Sat since they don't get a return fare. It's really foggy out there too, much moreso than the main parts of the city. Also, one of my favorite parts about living in the city is being able to bring girls home easily from bars - i.e. walk/short drunk cab ride. If you have a wife and kids all of that is moot, btw. : )
Yeah, I have a wife and a baby, also we both are going to have cars. The apt complex have two parking spaces for free, so the parking situation won't be too bad hopefully. My office is at Brisbane and Google map is showing that the driving time is less than 10 minutes; not too sure if there will be any traffic.
It's because they know its a beautiful city & they know they won't fit in and can't afford it anyways so they bash it. It's a defense mechanism.
lived there several years....people are weird, summers are foggy cold, restaurants are overrated......the neighborhood u live in make a big difference on ur overall experience there......my advice is to spend a few days just driving through every single part of SF first.....well actually, my advice is to live in sausalito and commute to SF.
sausalito is gorgeous and we only spent a few hrs there. i just got back from a vacation there and absolutely loved it... kept thinking to myself "why wake up every morning of the rest of my life in houston when there are gorgeous places to live like SF?" it really is a beautfiul city with TONS to do. the public transportation is fantastic, as you can get just about anywhere of significance in the city w/o the need for a car. that said, i couldn't live there w/o one b/c of all the things in the surrounding areas i'd want to do on the weekends (hiking, biking, camping, kayaking, etc.). one of the biggest draws imo is the surrounding area. as stated a million times, expensive as hell... no doubt about it. and they legislate EVERYTHING. not something i agree w at all but something i feel i could put up with if i lived there. i did notice extremely cheap produce at a lot of the markets in chinatown, though, so i'm sure you could find your bargains. the city is w/o a doubt the polar opposite of houston... in almost every possible sense, and that is both a good and bad thing. but, speaking personally, i would move out there in a heartbeat for just that reason... it's a total change of pace. oh yeah, hit up hog island oysters and la mar cebicheria peruana, both on the piers.
More people should ask this same question. I asked this 12 years ago when I went to a bachelor party in Miami. I was like "wtf am I doing in houston? And for the rest of my life?
So I have lived here about 10 days.. Things I love 1. Weather 2. Fruits and Vegetables - taste so much better and much more fresh 3. Sceneries 4. Asian Food - I thought Houston had really good Asian food and it does, however, SF wins after I made a visit to China and Japan town. 5. Eco & Health Conscious Environment - It is one of the greenest cities in the state and it shows. 6. Public Transportation 7. Higher Income - getting paid almost double Things that I liked in TX 1. Parking Spots 2. Weather - It is hard to enjoy the summer in the pool since it's too cold for that. Also it gets bit foggy out here 3. Easy Access to the mega stores - There are only couple Targets and there is no Walmart. 4. Places to play Basketball, Softball, and Flag football. Maybe I am looking at the wrong places, but I am having hard time finding the right places Many people have pointed the high cost of living but I have been cooking / eating at home and also been bringing lunch to the work. I don't think I am spending that much more money here in SF compare to TX; of course, the housing is way more expensive. I am spending way less gas since everything is within 15-20 min. Overall, there are things that I miss about living in TX, but I am glad that I have made this choice to move here. I could have different opinion once my baby grows up.
