    Deron Williams agrees with Besiktas

    07/07/11 11:48

NBA star Deron Williams has agreed terms with Turkish club Besiktas in principle.

Williams will sign a contract with Besiktas that will allow him to return to NBA as soon as the lockout ends. Nevertheless it is the greatest summer transfer by a European club, so far.

Williams who was traded to New Jersey Nets earlier this season after a fall out with the former team coach Jerry Sloan would be receiving $16.000.000 this year, but obviously doesn't want to stay inactive during the lockout.

The 27 year old will reportedly receive $200.000 per month.

Club's coach Ergin Ataman has confirmed the move and stated that the club is also very close to Zaza Pachulia, as well.

Matt and Clyde should sign for their color commentator spots... and never come back.

I understand they have a smaller budget over there, but only 200,000 a month? And yes, I know this is to stay in shape and all that, but what a deal for d will.

How can he do this if he's still under contract to the Nets. Why would New Jersey let him go and risk injury? I'm pretty sure I read before that if an injury occurred while playing overseas, the player's NBA team could void his contract.

I'm pretty sure any NBA contract a player has during a lockout is pretty much invalid. The players aren't even getting paid during the lockout so technically the players don't owe their team s#!7.

Besides, with how childish the NBA reacted with removing all the players from the website, I think it's a two way street here. The players can do whatever they want. But the minute the lockout is over, the players better be back to fulfill their contracts.

I may be wrong, just my thoughts.

Good, I hope he strains his finger and the Nets void his contract so the Rockets can sign him. I don't think there's anything his team can say because they're locked out, I expect more big name players to do this and add pressure to get a deal done.

This is a smart move by the players, last time they caved in and had no option, this time they seem more organized.

Ugh - this could go awhile.

Williams would need to insurance to cover any injuries he might have while he plays overseas BEFORE he goes over there.

In Europe they use periods instead of commas. Therefore, $200k a month.

Besiktas have problems paying their players on time or even at all.

    1. $200K a month is chump change. It's less than what Quincy Douby is getting in China. (Of course the fact that he's not guaranteed to be there the whole year puts a damper on his price.)

Seems to be very little money to risk your health over for a guy who can get $16 mil a year in the NBA. As such, I'm guessing this move might be less about the money than it is about other things (like putting pressure on owners to end the lockout? Or maybe he's banging Okur's wife?

    2. My guess is that guys who are current FAs and can sign full-year or even multi-year deals without having to come back to the NBA will fetch the best price. Those with European citizenship probably do even better since, I think, there's a quota for non-Europeans in most or all of the European leagues. So, someone like Kristic (who already signed), Pietrus, etc. would be the perfect candidate to sign overseas. It would be suprising for bigger-name guys like Nene or Marc Gasol to do it, though, since the risk/reward ratio is different (which again, is what makes the Deron W. story so strange).

I'm sure he'll get some level of insurance. If I was him, I'd be willing to pay a very hefty premium, even. Because this first overseas contract for him should be about putting some small amount of change in his pocket, but not much more is that important. Either the lockout will end, and he will have stayed in shape, and gained international exposure, or it won't, and he'll know whether or not he wants to keep playing in europe/overseas, this time likely for more money.

Seems to make sense to me. Enter short contract, with out provision, paying enough money, even if nowhere near what you were getting, pay a ridiculous insurance premium to cover you in case of career threatening injury, stay in shape, gain new fans....
