People judge stupidity. It's stupid to not wear a seat belt. It's stupid to smoke 2 packs a day. It's stupid to not wear a helmet while on a motorbike. It's stupid to fall to your death while planking. It's stupid to drink and drive. And in many cases it's stupidity that leads to one being super fat... stupidity in this case being complete ignorance to proven principles for nutrition, exercise, and healthy living. I feel terrible for people who are doing their best to be in shape, but just can't make it for whatever reason. It's sad. But for those who are fat out of sheer ignorance, it is just stupid. I'm not the judge and jury and I don't care to ever make fun of somebody for such a reason. But I can understand WHY people judge such a thing. It leads to heart disease, diabetes, and so many other things that cause an earlier death. And it often impacts the next generation as fat parents often lead to fat children. So yes, if you are ignorant and fat you will be judged. It's not necessarily fair, but there are reasons...

For a variety of reasons, people end up with different basal metabolic rates. IMO the main goal to pursue is increasing your basal metabolic rate. You're not going to eat at a deficit from what your body needs forever. You're not going to exercise like a maniac forever any more than I will pick up a musical instrument I don't care about and play it forever - you need to be passionate about being in shape, and not all people are. Figure out what shape you ultimately want to be in. Figure out how much exercise you think you will be willing to do regularly for the rest of your life. Figure out what's the minimum amount of food you can eat without it pissing you off for the rest of your life. Then you know exactly what your metabolism has to do, and you can kick off a project to get to that point. I think that works well.
Why is it that in France, obesity is not a serious problem and no one has heard of a gym or diet food? It's because walking everywhere is normal, and eating very rich food in very small amounts is normal. Here, we shovel down food, 3,000 calories a day is not seen as a problem, when in reality the human body survives and thrives on much less than that. We've stretched out our stomachs to the point that we think our food intake is normal. Have you ever ordered ice cream at a sit-down restaurant in Paris? You never get more than a scant 1/2 cup. Or fine cheese, you get about an ounce. It's super fattening and delicious, but it's the portion size that means everything. I think another issue is that people get adequate time off from work each year, and enjoy leisure more than in America. People work until they're stressed to the core and then pile the food on to keep the stress at bay. It's so unhealthy, and it's a HUGE reason why we're not leading the world in life expectancy.
It's simple. People are lazy and refuse to eat the right foods. People eat things like Taco Bell, McDonald's, and Burger King and then complain that they are fat or genetics made them fat. They're fat because they don't eat right. Genetics has nothing to do with it. When a family is fat, it's not genetics. It's the fact that the entire family eats unhealthily and does nothing to change their ways.
Genetics does have something to do with it. I'm 6'1 and 150 lbs and I eat way too much fast food. I've attempted to put on weight with weight gainers and slamming double quarter pound cheeseburgers with no success.
How do people get super fat in the morbidly obese category? Honestly, I have no idea. Even at my lowest points when I was lazy, eating crap food, doing nothing healthy, walking as little as possible, etc. ...my weight gain never skyrocketed to the point I could understand such a huge weight gain. My only explanation is these people are so extreme in their habits that it goes way beyond anything I ever experienced. I guess that stomach just keeps expanding and eating the poor foods just keeps people coming back for more. Vicious cycle in their lives would be an understatement imo. Eating processed, unhealthy foods just snowballs because you end up eating more and more of it to feel full. So, one Big Mac becomes two becomes three becomes four I imagine. At my lowest fast food point, I was still only biggie sizing with an occassional side item. At some point, most reasonable people realize they are at a weight they don't like when they look in the mirror and do something about it. The ones that never reach that point just keep putting on the pounds I guess.
I used to think the same thing as you, but I live in Chicago now (great public transportation), but there are fat people EVERYWHERE.
There is no such thing as eating at the wrong time. As long as your calorie intake isn't super high above your maintenance level, then you're good.
In regards to people being uncomfortable with themselves because of their weight, just lower your food portions like FinalsBound said. Don't eat til you're "full," eat until you're satisfied. You know that feeling you get when you go to a buffet, or eat an extremely large amount of food (Thanksgiving, for example)? That should not be a regular occurrence. Just eat smaller portions with a lot of water, until you feel that you aren't "starving" anymore and do it again every 5 to 6 hours during the day. Don't eat before you go to bed, and cut down on fast food if you're a fast food junkie. Another thing that works is to get a stationary bike and ride while you watch TV. If you're really out of shape, start off by riding nonstop during commercials only. Then you can gradually work your way up to the point where you can ride during the show, and rest during commercials. Yes, it is easier to put on the weight than to lose it, but there are ways to slim down without starving yourself or developing an eating disorder.
Or they go to Subway and eat the Meatball mar1juana and think that just because it is Subway, then it's healthy. I heard this lady yesterday say "its subway, they don't put anything bad in it", as her 300+ pound self at that meatball sub. SMH.
lol at Meatball mar1juana. That gets on my nerves too. One time I went to Subway and I heard this employee say "I thought this **** made you lose weight? I gained 5 pounds in a month working here." Subway can get you just as big if you load it with the wrong stuff. Not to mention all that bread too. I just get wheat bread when I go, and tear off any excess bread.
I play basketball 4-5 times a week, full court up and down, up and down. Out in the texas heat... Not very hard to stay fit when u come home and u can ring out your shirt and fill up a 20 oz. bottle of sweat (Never done it, but i know i could! HAHA)
Why are people fat? There are a couple of reasons, IMO. One- American society accepts it. It's O.K. to be fat now. Look at movies/video from twenty five years ago- the 'fat' person wasn't that fat (Chunk from Goonies). Back then you might double-take at a person who had 50 extra lbs. Now it's sadly normal. Another example: go to the grocery store- fat people on scooters everywhere, the aisles are wider. And it doesn't pay to be skinny- it costs more to eat healthy unless you put a lot of time (cost) and effort (cost) into it. There's billions of dollars banking on the overweight. Two- With the advent of the internet and personal computing, we're a sedentary society. (As other people have noted)- exercise is a job, not a byproduct of our lifestyle. We have to put effort into it, in a society that spurns effort for the easy way out. Three- we're an oral retentive society. There are so many ways to derive pleasure from putting things in your mouth, 24/7...soda, candy, sweets, energy drinks, fast food, booze, cigarettes, a plethora of oral drugs legal and illegal. Again, there's a profit to be made on the overweight. We're conditioned to constantly stuff our faces with something for satisfaction. Fascinating and disgusting at the same time.
I guarantee you the people talking about how easy it is to get thin, and how all fat people are lazy, stupid and borderline immoral. Have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. O.k typing this was my exercise for today now on to my eating 12 eggs, a package of bacon and a loaf of toast for breakfast. Donny, dude I know you are a nutritionist/personal trainer. But I hope you have nothing to do with the site you listed, not because it "tells hard truths fatties are afraid of!" but because it is written on a second grade level by an angry second grader.
You might not be gaining weight on the outside, but your cholesterol and sodium levels will be through the roof. If anything, trying to gain weight by eating incredibly unhealthy foods is even MORE dangerous, because at least if you gain the weight, you'll have a reason to stop eating like that. If you maintain your physique however, you will never know the havoc you are wreaking on your body.
