Who has greater trade value, Bourn or Pence? Bourn is a gold glove defender, solid hitter, premier base runner, and plays a more important position. Pence is a good hitter with good power but doesn’t walk that much and is average defensively. I would say Pence could bring in more in return because of his run driving ability.
Happ is f'ing worthless! Why the hell this guy is still in the starting rotation is beyond me. This guy makes Chris Holt look like Roy O.
Neither is going to get you a top-notch prospect. Maybe you'll get another pitcher like JA Happ back. The Astros don't need anymore players like that. They need real projected value.
According to WAR, Bourn has not only been our best player this year but has been among the best players in the NL. He was 6th best last time I checked, just ahead of Votto. He doesn't slug the ball so that's hard for some to believe but he does a lot of things well.
not just that but poor trades in deadline pushes as well.....tell me you wouldn't rather have not traded for Aubrey Huff and kept Ben Zobrist. If we had zobrist playing second for the past 3 and a half seasons, in which he's hit 58 home runs so far we would have had some young talent producing on the cheap. Instead we decided to pay Kaz Matsui and Bill Hall to not produce......it's just sad how incompetent the front office is. The front office is pitiful at evaluating talent,we traded the best closer in baseball Billy Wagner and landed Brandon Duckworth Taylor Bucholz Ezequiel Astacio did any of those guys do anything remotely good, astacio I remember was competing with Wandy for the who starts game 4 of the 2005 world series and I was at home thinking neither would suffice at the time. Then We trade 5 guys for tejada, the only one which ended up hurting was Luke Scott.....the guy goes out and averages 25 home runs over the last 3 seasons all while collecting a total of $6.9M.... Our front office needs to go
True... but which contenders really need a player like him? NYY, Boston, TB, St. Louis, Texas, SF are all pretty much set at leadoff hitter/and or centerfielder.
He's slower than molasses. He does seem to be moving a little better this year but he's still suprisingly slow for his age and body type. Not sure what the deal is with him. Maybe he had some kind of injury in the past or something else that limits him. Fortunately, he's pretty fundamentally sound or he'd be a liability in the field as well because of his lack of range.
He still would have been fast enough to get to third. Him not tagging up wasn't a product of poor speed... it was bad base-running. Only 1 run on 3 hits, with your 1-5 guys hitting, is almost as bad as giving up 3 runs in the top of the inning.
Oh, I wasn't touching on the trade part even though that was his question. I just meant that you can make a strong argument that he's been better than Pence and anybody else on this team when you factor in the entire game. Trade wise, I wouldn't expect very much for him, without even knowing what team needs are. Not sure where he'd fit in STL with Rasmus unless you're talking a defensive replacment type of thing.
Puma goes yard again. 21 HR and he's missed 10 games and come off the bench in a couple of others. We don't have a player with 10 HR yet. Our top 3 HR hitters have 22 combined. Pence, Lee and Wallace have 20 combined.
Its getting annoying now... especially since Wallace still sits against lefties, and Carlos Lee is still being trotted out there. Berkman at 50 will be better than Carlos Lee is last year and now.
I would almost put money down that Bourn ends up in Atlanta by the deadline. They need a CF/leadoff man in the worst way and he fits the bill exactly. Being cheap and still under control for another 1.5 years helps any deal and the Braves have a ton of young promising pitching. Also don't count out Cincinnati, they need a boost and Drew Stubbs if having a pretty mediocre year.
Its true that you have to give up something special to get something special. The problem is, the Stros dont have anything special, but they do have a couple guys close. The only way we, or anyone is going to get top or over the top value is if someone gets hurt (God forbid) on a contender and they are desperate for a replacement, AND the type of guy they need happens to be one of our 2 or 3 best players. Its always going to be a supply/demand thing. Just to throw a guy into a trade and get a mediocre return is kind of fruitless. If its a guy like Lee, that you NEED to get rid of, then sure take whatever is offered. But Pence, Bourn & Wandy are 3 guys we shouldnt give away too easily.
I hated HATED the Billy Wagner deal but to be fair that was a completely different front office. It was one of Hunsicker's few failures but even then, the prospects they got were pretty highly rated. I think the crime of the Huff/Zobrist trade wasn't the trade itself, the Stros were fighting for the divison that year and needed more offense which Huff provided. The issue was not resigning the guy or even worse not resigning his eventual replacement Ty Wigginton...both have done well since leaving the Stros. Luke Scott is a nice player and the only player I regret losing in the Miggy deal also but until last year, Carlos was the MUCH better player even with the bloated salary. Last season was not contest in the other direction but the season Carlos has had the better season and that is saying a lot.
Highly underrate Bourn, he is an elite defensive outfielder and baserunner. He is actually getting on base this season and driving the ball, on pace to have 40 doubles and has a slugging over .400. He has stepped up his game big time this season and would most certainly get you a top 50 guy. Much the same with Pence, what helps both is their age and being under club control for more then a season. Either should get you nice prospect to help the farm team substantially.
If that is true, they should do it ASAP. I don't see either of those guys getting much better. And by the time the Astros are good again, they will be old.
