Yeah, but you are stuck with him for four years and he's eating up your valuable cap space. With Oden it's less cap space, and a much shorter committment. The risk/ reward seems to be better IMO.

But i hear you. If you spend 8 mil on a player that can't play period, that is a crappy situation. But i also think being chained to an underachiever on very expensive, long-term contract is also a crappy situation.

Can someone explain why this offer is $8.8m

Doesn't it only have to be $7.3m??

    http://members.cox.net/lmcoon/salarycap.htm#Q42

    3rd yr rookie scale for a #1 = $4,467,700
    4th yr option = $4,467,700 * 26.1% = $5,633,769

    Qualifying offer is 30% raise = $7,323,900

Lol the owners around the nba crack me up. How about not paying these ridiculous contracts to injury riddled 40 year olds.

almost all rookie contracts are signed at 120% value of the rookie scale. therefore oden's 4th year salary is actually $5.6M * 1.2 = $6.7M

    and 30% raise of 6.7m = 8.8 M

That's about a million dollars per game for Oden, that is, if he plays at all.

There is something seriously wrong with the CBA for Oden to be able to get qualifying offer like this. It's OK for a top pick that produced but geez he played like 80 games in 4 years.

If they wanted too they could let him walk and become a free agent. The rookie scale is just fine.

I actually think the 8.8M QO is a reasonable business decision for the blazers, regardless of Oden's health.

It's probably unlikely that Oden takes the QO at this point. I would think he'll be looking for a longer deal with more garanteed money at this point - even if it means a lower per year amount.

as a result, in the most likely case, blazers just tied up 8.8M of their cap space (which they don't have any anyway) for the rights of first refusal, and the risk (oden accepts the QO and force blazer to take the risk for a year) doesn't sound that bad...

    NO.

Thabeet (@~$5MM) = Medium Risk, Medium Reward
Yao (@LLE) = Minimal Risk, High Reward
Oden (@$9MM) = Stupidly High Risk, Medium Reward)

Just because they are big doesn't mean they are good.

Not worth it. We're talking about a guy that only played like 70 games in 3 seasons. On top of that, he has one longer leg than the other and have to wear a special shoe to even it out. I mean Yao's foot problem is bad enough but Oden's knees is worst. Having knee issues is much worst than foot issues.

C'mon, even our own Yao Ming has earned a few million per game the last 2 years.

Bottomline, don't want either of them.

We already have one broken center, why do we need another?

So we can tank for 2012, or get lucky... (Or both!)
