    The "loopholes" do not cause the salary to grow by 8 to 10% when revenue grows by 4%.

    For example, between 05/06 and 09/10 BRI grew by 10.9, 2.5 and 1%, respectively. Player salaries changed by 10.9, 4.0 and -0.5%.

    Neither the "looopholes" nor the annual increase in some player contracts add up to the situation to which you refer.

    Is this surprising? We are in a recession!!! Let's look at the numbers in more detail (history going back to 2001), of the bottom 10 teams:

    Bucks - Profit 5 of the last 10 years. They have lost $7M and $2M in the last 2 years. I don't recall anyone forcing them to give Redd that huge deal ($16M and $17M over the last 2 years). They have their best player in a suit, which limits how good of a team they can be (and who pays to see them play), and they still only lost $2M last year. They are actually owed $8.5M from the Bradley Center. Value went up from $19M at purchase (1985) to $258M now.

    Twolves - Consistently losing $$ since 2004. They haven't made the playoffs in 6 years yet their payroll has never been below $65M in that timeframe. I can understand the high payroll when KG was there, but after he left? This is probably the best example of a poorly run franchise that we can find. Value went up from $89M at purchase (1995) to $264M now.

    Grizzlies - Consistently losing $$ since 2000. Also one of the worst franchises in league history. Why would anyone want to watch this team for the majority of the seasons they have been in existence? Value went up from $160M at purchase (2000) to $266M now.

    Pacers - They have lost $$ the last 5 years. They have missed the playoffs the last 4 years....in the Eastern Conference at that. Why is their payroll so high (at least $67M over that span)? Value went up from $11M at purchase (1983) to $269M now.

    Bobcats - They have lost big $$ over the last 3 years and their payroll has had large increases in the same timeframe. Yet they only made the playoffs once. Jordan runs the team and has been making dumb decisions. Value went up from $175M at purchase (2010) to $281M now.

    Kings - Profitable in 7 of the 10 years. Now the owners are trying to move the team (losses over the past 2 years). Would you say the Maloof's are doing a good job running the team? Value went up from $156M at purchase (1998) to $293M now.

    Hawks - Profitable in 7 of the 10 years. Lost $7M and $2M over the last 2 years. Didn't they recently give Joe Johnson a max contract when he clearly isn't a max player? And even then, player salaries aren't the only blame here because their revenues have been over $100M for the past 3 years. Value went up from $208M at purchase (2004) to $295M now.

    Clippers - STERLING MADE AT LEAST $10M FOR THE LAST 10 YEARS!!!! Value went up from $13M at purchase (1981) to $305M now.

    Nets - The team has routinely lost money over the past 10 years. Yet they still sold for $365M in 2010, in the middle of a recession.

    Looking at these examples in more detail reveals 3 things:

    - Most of the teams losing $$ seem to have inept management in place
    - Most of these losses could be reduced by revenue sharing
    - Most of these owners would still come out ahead if they sold their team, compared to what they purchased the team for. Even a team that is constantly losing money like the Nets can be sold for a high amount in a recession.

    What investor wouldn't want an investment that makes money in most years and appreciates at the rates these basketball teams are? The owners don't seem to be doing that bad to me when you look at the big picture.

    even if there is a hard cap, the amount for a max contract is adjusted downward. Instead of a max contract being worth (hypothetically) 14 million a year, it will be worth 9 million a year. I doubt that a hard cap will really handicap multiple super-star caliber players to play on the same team together...They will just make less money...

    Well the NBA isn't alone in the recession. And I don't see another major sports league where more than half of the franchises are claiming to be losing money. I'd say that's a bit surprising, yeah. I assumed the number would be closer to 8....not 17.

    Well football has revenue sharing. The only other comparison is baseball. Do they have revenue sharing?

    Go through those teams and see exactly how much they are losing. Some teams have been losing $$ for years but when you look at the team it makes sense. They usually have a combo of being in a bad market and having inept management. Of course no one will pay to watch your team if you never put a good product on the court. Some of those teams just made idiotic decesions, like maxing out Joe Johnson or giving Amare a max deal even though insurance won't cover it (Knicks are ok but you get the point). At the end of the day teams control their own payroll. No one is forcing owners to throw $$ away on guys like Rashard Lewis. And even then, the franchise value has increased so much that they still come out way ahead. Again, Donald Sterling makes $$ every year.

    If the losses really are that bad revenue sharing could fix it just as well as slashing player salaries. That's all I'm saying.

    my point is only that when there are 17 teams out of 30 who can point to losing money, there's a problem. and i'm not arguing with you where the problem is, because i don't know.
