Yeah, we need this guy in the worst way. What a coup for us that the guy opted out (potential coup, anyway). I thought for sure this guy was going to re-up with the Nugs and never give anyone else a chance to make a run at him.
Him and Amare up front would be scary athletic and offensive dynamite, though No-D Antoni will probably covert them into the Washington Generals on defense.
You guys dream small. Would Nene vastly improve the Rockets? Absolutely. But so what - we'd still be mediocre. In the process, were we to sign him, we miss out on the chance to have enough cap room in 2012 to sign not one but up to two superstar free agents. Dwight Howard, Chris Paul and Deron Williams all appear as though they'll be available. I honestly think we'd have as good a chance as any to lure Howard and one of Paul or Williams to Houston in that scenario. Kevin Martin would make a perfect third option for those guys. They'd recognize him as their own Ray Allen. Meanwhile, we'd have already have depth with all of our young guys on rookie contracts (and we'll have probably just drafted another top 10 lottery pick) and we'd be able to trade Lowry for more depth (even though I'd hate to see him go). Nene will not make us a contender. He will not help lure a franchise player to Houston. He will improve our team enough to hurt our chances of drafting a franchise player. I think we should gamble on being great in 2012.
jMw, this is the USA - land of instant gratification. Your sensible ideas will not find much support. Especially when we can have nene or dalembart!
I like nene, but he's not a difference maker. His skillset says he should be, but he really isn't. A guy with those type of athletic abilities should be 1st or 2nd team nba, but he can't even make an all star game. I would pass and rather go for howard. The rockets are much further than nene from competing.
What sort of chance do you think the Rockets have of getting Dwight Howard? Even if the Rockets get the necessary cap room, isn't it still a long shot at best?
1. Trying to get "2-Max Room" by not getting a good center this offseason is fool's gold. There will likely be multiple teams with 2-Max Room next year (if they refrain from spending and/or cut a significant contract) so the Rockets are more likely to end up more like Chicago or NJ than they are like Miami. Also, New York, with Melo and Amare, are trying to sign only 1-year deals so they can add a 3rd Max. 2. The Rockets' best chance to attract a star is to win as many games as possible. Nene helps you do that. The team has a better chance of being attractive if they manage to win 50 games instead of 43.
The problem with that "bright idea" is that it's already been thought of AND attempted to be put in effect with the summer of Bosh/Amare/Wade/Lebron etc. We can't just keep being horrible to mediocre and believe players like Dwight, CP, and D-Will are gonna just say "hey! Yeah I'll play on those crappy Roxkets teams and rebuild with them even tho I want ships" The only reason the Miami Heat are what they are today is because they all colectively KNEW it would come together as is, including Pat Riley. Therefore only way we are guaranteed that to happen is if all players collude with Morey and decide "We are coming to Houston! And you can give away all our "Assets" for nothing!!!" Hasn't happened therefore we have to find a different path.
I think they would have a god shot as long as they have enough money for williams or paul also. The rockets should move scola with the necassary pieces to fre up salary to make a pitch at both. They can keep martin and patterson, dragic, lowry, but if they get williams/paul and williams, they could get something decent for lowry.
I think it's risky not to go for it. If it isn't that - it's this perpetual mediocrity. Nene is not going to elevate us above that.
If DH miraculously shows interest in coming to Houston, wouldn't having a legitimate center like nene to give back in a possible sign and trade be beneficial to us? Just because we sign someone this year doesn't mean he won't be traded next year, Morey has proven he has no problem shipping out recently signed guys.
