I agree with you on Miller. I thought he could give us 15 minutes a game but not sure who the hell thought he would get us over the hump into title contention.

Weird bc I expect more out of Marcus and D Mo than any of our 2009 players.

there always is...no one wins a title alone. i'm not suggesting otherwise.

i am suggesting that it's not a coincidence that 1st team and 2nd team All NBA players keep finding themselves in the Finals each season.

I think is most likely destination is Boston or Miami. He'd be able to start on a contender.

honestly, how in the world can you EXPECT that? hope, sure. but expect?

a rookie playing a position he never played in college?

a european guy i'm guessing you've never actually seen 40 minutes of real playing time from?

is it solely because in Morey you trust?

I think that you're selling Kevin Martin short. He is a scoring machine just like Dirk. He doesn't play defense well just like Dirk.

The main difference is that Martin struggles a bit late in the fourth and that's when Dirk is at his best. At the end of the day, they still give you the same scoring..
I watch a lot of college ball. Marcus Morris has a different motor than any of these guys. We should all be happy that he miraculously slipped to us.

As far as D Mo, that's all hope :D

No...I'm not selling him short. Kevin Martin is nowhere near the player that Dirk Nowitzki is. I'm sorry that's the case...but it just is. He's never been the man on a team that's done squat. Nowitzki has been the driving force behind a team that's won a championship and won the conference 2x. I'm not a Dirk fan by any means...but only in Houston would one suggest that Kevin Martin is anywhere close to the discussion of Dirk Nowitzki.

Well, Sammy, there's a difference of around half a foot and a different position, to begin with. I'd trade two Kevin Martins for one Dirk Nitwitski if they're the same age, and not even blink.

Dirk averaged 23 a game efficiently. Kevin Martin averaged 24 a game efficiently. I was sitting behind Les and watched Martin drop 32 in the first half of a game. There's no denying that Martin is a world-class scorer.

At 28, Martin is only getting better.

You would after this postseason run. Everyone thought that Dirk was a choke artist at this time last season.

This is where analytics go too far. If your analysis/comparison of Dirk Nowitzki and Kevin Martin ends with you finding them to be comparable because they're both efficient scorers, then I think it's possible you're missing the bigger picture.

Way down on the list.... Many other options will have to become unavailable.

But their PPG is similar! And 2 points in the 3rd quarter is worth just as much as 2 points in the final two minutes!

In our quest for a superstar, we seemed to have lowered the standards for what is considered an "elite or world-class scorer."

Before the All-star break = winning 44% of games
After the All-star break = winning 68% of games

If the rockets had managed to win games at the same rate
    during the entire season
they would have been a 56 win team.

I know this is pointless if they come out of the gate slow like they did last season... but this seems like a different team without battier and AB. I really do think it was addition by subtraction. That plus a potential big upgrade at SF has me really excited for this season.

    Lowry
    Martin
    Morris
    Scola
    Hayes

That's going to be a very underrated lineup. Please continue to say the rockets are going to suck it up next season, b/c when these guys play with a chip on their shoulder they can hang with the best. Championship? no. Playoff run? absolutely.

Deckard said that he would trade two Kevin Martin's for Dirk. Would you have done that type of deal last summer?
Women lie. Men lie. Numbers don't lie.

Let's compare the Mavs to the Rockets.

    Chandler/Haywood v ???/Hayes/D Mo
    Dirk/? v Scola/Patterson
Marion/Peja/Butler injured v Budinger/Morris (envison Morris as the starter by playoffs)
    Stevenson/Jet v Martin/Lee
    Kidd/JJ v Lowry/Dragic

I was in attendance when the Rockets played the Mavs in a must-win game for Dallas late in the season. We ended blowing that game too and lost in OT. That was without Scola and Lowry. Dragic single-handedly shut down Kidd and JJ

We disagree but the Rockets are set at every position besides center. Our record was solid after the all-star break (68% according to the dje241) and I think we'll be fine assuming we remain healthy. I felt the opposite way last summer.

He'd be a good fit with the Knicks.

Does NOT fit with the Rockets. He's not a star, would take away valuable cap space for 2012, and is over 30.

    1. it's a hypo, because we don't even have 2 K-Marts on this roster. but if you had asked me last summer to trade lowry and k-mart for dirk i would have said yes a billion times over.

    2. comparing a lottery team's roster to the NBA champs doesn't really help your point with me. their whole is greater than the sum of their parts, by far. again, this is where analytics let you down. they don't tell the whole story.

Let's get back to the real discussion. We get better by adding Dalembert. It would be a steal around the MLE.

The Mavs were a one and done team (first round exit to Spurs in 2010) to a championship team by adding Chandler and with the growth of players like JJ Barea.

I doubt that you had the Mavs as a contender with the the strict criteria you have outlined. I definitely did.

I'm glad the Rockets were a lottery team bc we added a player of Marcus Morris' caliber. It doesn't change the fact that we won nearly 70% of our games after the all-star break. You know after that one dude got traded to Pheonix.

i think if you have a player the caliber of Dirk, you're in the discussion.

you're talking about 1st team All NBA or 2nd team All NBA kind of talent there....here's the list of players that are on that list:

    1. Derrick Rose
    2. Lebron James
    3. Kevin Durant
    4. Kobe Bryant
    5. Dwight Howard
    6. Dwayne Wade
    7. Russel Westbrook
    8. Pau Gasol
    9. Dirk Nowitzki
    10. Amare Stoudemire

Every player on that list has played in the Conference Finals.

6 of the 10 have played in the NBA Finals. Of the 4 who haven't, 1 (Rose) only played 2nd seasons; Durant, has only played 4; and Westbrook has only played 3.

That list accounts for 9 championships.

This is the kind of the talent the Rockets are missing. This is the kind of talent that drives teams in the NBA playoffs. With very few exceptions, these are necessary components of a championship run.

As an aside...I don't envy you being at BU right now. Dallas fans were obnoxious with the Cowboys winning rings when I was there....but the Mavs and Rangers were beyond forgetable during that timeframe and my Rockets were busy winning back-to-back titles. With the Rangers and Mavs playing well at the same time and Houston teams sucking???...holy crap, that would have killed me.
