9 million dollars for someone who may never play again. This is just sad. Sometimes when you've made a bad bet you should just cut the loss and run.
EPIC FAIL. I need 8 million i can sit on the side lines and do nothing kinda like what he has done. This is ridiculous maybe 1 million or 2 max but 8 mil you got to be kidding. By far the worst way to give away money to a player not even worth it and i thought kelvin cato robbed us blind.
More like January or February from what I remember. Maybe Oct or Nov is when they plan on him resuming basketball if everything goes perfect. If I was a betting person, my money would be on Oden not playing at all next season (if there is a season).
We need a 7 footer with a history of health problems, coming off of his second season-ending surgery, who still needs rehab and might never play again? I thought we already had one of those.
LOL why is tendering him a one year offer a gamble? The bigger gamble is offering him a multi year contract without seeing what he can do first. If Oden ends up injured again next season then you can just cut your losses and let him go. If on the other hand you signed him to a multi year deal without first seeing what he can do this year then they just screwed themselves for the next 5 years.
My post clearly says 3 years with team options on years 2 and 3. How is THAT a gamble? I never said offer him 5 years. It's a gamble for Portland to offer him just the 1 year offer because if he comes back injury free, he will be unrestricted and Portland will be really screwed to lose him for nothing to free agency, or give him a max contract and hope he stays healthy. It's a qualifying offer, they have to offer that amount.
He took pictures of it and the pictures were leaked. He could probably beat someone to death with it.
Why in the world would Oden sign a 3 year, $25M contract with team options? The first year salary would be less than if he signed the qualifying offer, and if he can't come back, the team will just not pick up his option. If he does play well, he's locked himself into a contract that might be less than what he could get on the open market.
How would that haunt them? It's the second best thing that could happen to them regarding Oden after some other team offering him a deal and the Blazers declining to match.
I edited my original post saying it would only come back to haunt them it Greg Oden is finally healthy. If he comes back strong and only has a 1 year deal, Portland would have to give him a ridiculous contract to keep him and risk owing him tons of money if he gets hurt again.
They will sign him to a 1 year deal unless someone gives him a ridiculous multi year deal. The Blazers are going to have a better cap situation because they are Amnesty cutting Roy. DD
with the new CBA Oden would make more a lot more money staying in Portland as opposed to leaving for free agency. The Blazers could sign him to an extension mid season.
@jwquick Jason Quick BREAKING: Greg Oden will be a Trail Blazer next season. Agent Bill Duffy says Oden will sign 1-year qualifying offer on Friday for $8.9 mil
