Facebook is a s**tload larger than MySpace ever was. The bigger they are, the harder it is to beat them. Also, Facebook and MySpace were significantly different; Facebook and Google+ don't appear to be that different.
I support anything that goes against facebook and twitter. Unfortunately this has absolutely no chance of even catching up with facebook, much less overtaking it.
I really like the idea of posting stuff only certain groups can see. I don't have Facebook because I really don't care to share most things with everyone I know. With Google+ I can make a group to discuss video games, another group to discuss Rockets, a family group to discuss family things and show pictures, etc. I can't believe I'm actually interested in a social networking site.
I think that's the most notable option right now that differentiates it from facebook however, I see facebook quickly adding such a feature too
The other thing I like is the integration with Android, it looks like I'll be able to do 90% of what I'd want to do on Google+ on my phone or tablet. Facebook seems mediocre on the phone (playing with it on my wife's phone).
Personally think this product looks pretty good (currently working on a similar SNS project in China). Facebook having all the inertia is of course a central issue but... it's google we're talking about; Google has no problem drawing an initial userbase from pools of traffic from search, chrome, android, gmail, greader, gdocs, g maps, google ads ... (do I really need to go on?) plenty of other products. Product quality and user needs will determine the winner. I think they are spot on with the mechanics they chose and in the demo, showed how they addressed many of the issues people have with facebook. Likewise, a similar but off-topic comment ... I think Twitter should feel some pressure with the possibility of Sina weibo coming over to the US. It is by far a better micro-blogging product and showed a lot of innovation and long-term strategy.
Myspace was complete crap. I did not like it in the least bit from day one. Facebook on the other hand, is leaps and bounds better than any social networking site i've used. That said, I doubt google will make any significant strides.
Why don't I get these Google PLus invites? I have had my gmail account since the days of invite only.
So all your friends are the girls spamming with Lil Wayne quote. That's not Facebook's problem, that sounds like the problem with you and your circle of friends.
From the video it appears that they aren't doing anything too much different from facebook. Unless they are revolutionizing social networking like facebook did, they won't overtake them ... not by a longshot. I don't call being able to sync my social network with my google account/android phone, and the ease of sorting friend lists a "revolution". The majority of people use facebook to draw attention to themselves (through boasting or making witty/controversial posts) and get immediate feedback on what they post. Every facebook user already has an unlimited amount of friends to give them attention, so why would they jump over and start over with something that is not much different? That's my first take on it anyway. Facebook overtook myspace when they centered it around the news feed and instantaneous updates that people could see immediately. Unless google finds a way to better allow people to draw attention to themselves, it ain't happening... Yes, like Dr. L said, you can do this with facebook. You can privatize whatever you want and share it with only the people/groups you setup. Google might make it easier to do that, but I can promise you that facebook will introduce an easier way to do it if necessary.
I’m excited about it. It looks like it will actually have useful functionality, like trash talking to your fantasy football league buddies or setting up a quick and easy, multi-user video conference for work. Facebook, for me anyways, is chalked full of pretty useless info I don’t care about. I pretty much only get on to see if anyone on my friends list with big goozers has posted any pics.
Google owns youtube (which is a giant) and will introduce their-video chat into their social network app. In answer to your question, this is a huge way that Google better allows people to draw attention to themselves. .. and then Facebook is playing catchup to Google. Facebook's application has always been crappy and is just asking for a better-written app to knock them off the hill. Google has a better-written app. The question is - is Facebook too big to be knocked off the hill? History tells us, no, they're not. We've seen lots of big technology players get knocked down because of their complacence, especially when attacked by a very large opponent. I think Google has the right product at the right time. They have the size to deliver a strong attack. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see the whole world abandon Facebook to Google.
People will just stay at home, not go out at all and do personal things... and spend all day "creating groups" and "video chatting" and nothing will be off "social networks" anymore. Hilarious. When people say: "I like [choose your 'social network site'] because it offers something [choose another 'social network site'] doesn't offer... so I have accounts in both"... it makes me laugh. Sad to see you're discriminating/hiding/marginalizing/etc.
