Meeting, as you probably know, took place or is taking place today. Joerger declined comment when arriving at Bush IAH. Check the sticky thread on top, update or two in there I believe.
The Rockets may be able to steal Joerger for the lead assistant position. The Grizzlies don't want to negotiate with him until after the lockout, reportedly. Sources: Lockout affects Grizzlies talks http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=6624840 [rquoter] The Memphis Grizzlies are not working on renewing the expiring contracts of four assistant coaches in anticipation of a lockout, sources said Thursday. Assistants Johnny Davis, Dave Joerger, Henry Bibby and Barry Hecker all have contracts that expire this summer, and sources said the Grizzlies' management has not broached the subject of negotiating new deals. Teams throughout the league are taking different approaches to the possibility of a lockout. Some teams are providing partial pay to their staffs that are still under contract. Some, like the Grizzlies, are waiting to renew contracts until a new labor pact is in place. Others, such as the New Jersey Nets, have staff under contract but a stipulation they will not be paid during a lockout. San Antonio Spurs assistants will receive 75 percent of their salaries during the lockout and be reimbursed the missing 25 percent when a lockout ends, according to a source. Adding to the Grizzlies' assistants frustration, head coach Lionel Hollins received a full playoff share, while they received partial shares, according to sources with direct knowledge of contract talks. "I'm not going to go into any of that," Grizzlies general manager Chris Wallace said. "We're in the process of working on our staff. Our coaches' compensation is an internal matter." [/rquoter]
for the third or forth assistant coach, ie. not the "offensive coach" or "defensive coach," I'd love to get a former nba guard to help out the guards on our team to complement mchale's ability to help out the big guys on our team.
Grizzlies have the first decent playoff run in years, and now they go cheap and piss off all the assistant coaches with their playoff share and no contract. Is it any wonder why they miss the playoffs so often? Thanks Grizzlies for handing Joerger to us and forcing your other coaches to leave.
I could be wrong, but I think the players vote the playoff shares. Say what you want, but it is money out of their pockets.
http://blogs.commercialappeal.com/t...6/reality-of-the-griz-coaching-situation.html Sounds good. Come join the Rockets, Dave.
Great post, HMMMHMM. A 120% raise for a higher position at a new company and a contract longer than 1 year? Who wouldn't want to leave the Grizzlies? I would quit, too. Money talks. Who can blame them, if they all quit? They have to look out for the best interests of their family.
It looks like we should get Joerger, unless another team presents a better offer. Not an impossibility. He looks to be a nice hire, if we get him.
I don't think Joerger is a lock to come here. He is from Minnesota and if they fire Kurt Rambis, he probably will get a look there to be the next head coach. Even if they bring back Rambis, he might want to take the lead assistant coaching job there because he knows there is a possibility that Rambis could get fired and he could take over midseason and maybe than get the job on a full-time basis. Also if either Detroit, Toronto and Golden State hire either someone like Dwayne Casey or Lawerence Frank, the Celtics and Mavs will be in the market for a new assistant coach and let's be honest, those are better jobs than the Rockets job. I think this will take some time.
http://twitter.com/daldridgetnt/statuses/85875647473397760 Not sure if this helps or hurts our chances of getting Joerger. Johnny Davis was the lead assistant in Memphis, so Joerger might just take the promotion, if offered. Davis leaving the Grizzlies however could also mean that Heisley is being cheap and perhaps doesn't really care about the assistant coaches.
Jonathan Feigen wrote that the Rockets are waiting until July to interview one or more candidates whose contract with their current team doesn't expire until July 1st. He also mentioned weeks ago that the Rockets wanted to talk to Sam Cassell but didn't get permission form the Wizards. In addition, today I read that Jerry Sichting is under contract with the Warriors until July 1. So, my guess is one or both of these guys are candidates.
Yeah it looks like KM wants to have his friend Jerry Sichting on the coaching staff and just waiting for Jerry's contract to expire on Friday.
Can we get Ralph Sampson to coach as well and make him and Jerry Sichting sit next to each other on the bench every night?
Well the Warriors already said they aren't bring any of their assistant coaches from last year back so I don't think the fact Sichting's contract hasn't expired has nothing to do with the fact he hasn't be hired. The Bobcats just hired Rob Werdann yesterday as an assistant and he was with Golden State last year but they let him leave even though his contract was going expire in July. If the Rockets wanted to hire Sichting, they could have already.
Actually, while GSW let Werdann take a new job, it doesn't mean they don't have interest in bringin Sichting or any other holdover back. In fact, in Ken Berger's article for CBS Sports regarding Mark Jackson's hiring a couple weeks ago, he said: . http://ken-berger.blogs.cbssports.com/mcc/blogs/entry/11838893/29845966?source=rss_blogs_NBA
They already hired Mike Malone and he just hired Pete Myers. Also, Brendan Malone, Mike's dad, was given permission to interview and is expected to hire away from Orlando.
