SunsRocketsfan, I'm just going to reply the same way I always do on these matters. Slavery + Jim Crow + Segregation + War on Drugs did an immense amount of damage to the black community of America. We're talking about cycle of poverty here that the government has chose not to invest any way to help out. They do spend money in form of hand outs that to me equates to gladiator games in ancient Rome, i.e. just enough things to keep people from rioting in the streets but nothing that gets to the root of the problem. There will need to be some major infrastructure changes/investments to make things right, but there will unlikely any major political movement to solve it.

Heck, affirmative action was just a very minor step in that direction and look at all the uproar it caused.

I wonder what the black guy who is best friends with every frothing at the mouth racist in town charges for his services, I never met a racist without a "black good friend"....I am thinking he must be making some bank.

Theft is theft, and the fact that Wal-Mart is notorious for crazy stuff like "dead janitor" insurance policies and cutthroat business practices doesn't mean they deserve to have their goods stolen.....but it does mean a young mother who risks her life to avenge 3 cases of Buttwiper and Wally World's bottom line probably has a skewed "things to be outraged about" list.

Affirmative action is just another form of handout. No need to take away jobs from more qualified individuals.

If you're looking at grass root action it should take place in the form of parenting and education.

It what did I get called out for? I have nothing against anyone based on he color of their skin. Again I was actually joking in my original post. But aside from that facts are facts dont think anyone can dispute the stats I posted. Things are the way they are. Nothing to do with racism. And I admit my bad for derailing this thread.

For making race an issue. It is comical that you state everybody else is playing the race card but again you're the one who brought race up when really there was no reason to. The facts are disputable, as durvasa already posted.

I don't think someone knows what a cycle of poverty means.

I admire the spirit of that Ms. Lawless but put me in the camp that this was very stupid of her. Also though its sad that Walmart doesn't have better security and that the rest of the shoppers weren't willing to help while she was trying to go TJ Hooker on these guys.

Mexican immigrants break the "cycle" despite arguably greater obstacles?

Mexican immigrants = the people who left their homes to seek a better life. I.e. people who tend to show initiative. By leaving Mexico, we are already talking about people that have broken the cycle.

It's like the same stupid stereotype of Asian's being good at math. In reality math and science related professions are where there's a shortage of strong talents in the U.S. Which makes it easier for immigrants from China/India to get sponsorship and become legal immigrants. That's why you end up having a larger distribution of strong math persons within that group.

When using statistics to drive an argument, one has to be mindful of potential selection bias in the statistics. Pretend it's during a fictional war and you needed soldiers to defend an outpost. You have a choice of doing a mission with 100 fresh soldiers who were drafted and 100 fresh soldiers who volunteered. Both groups just came out of boot camp with the same training and limited experience. Which one are you more inclined to chose or expect better results?

If anything, the fact that there is still 20% poverty for people that showed so much initiative might suggest the deck is still stacked somewhat. I.e., certain situations are just hard to climb out of.

So you are saying the reason we have such a high poverty level in the african american community is a lack of initiative?

So you're claiming black people have no initiative?
