Yup. It was the Fish Fry. The line was out the door and then some for it. It reminded me of a lot of small towns that have popular restaurants where the wait is forever on weekend nights. I almost just left back for Dallas, but decided I'd try the catfish since it's one of my favorite foods. lol.

    Thanks. I just downloaded it.

I have to take my Daughter to camp today and was planning on trying Opies in spicewood because I've heard good things. The reviews are good and I'll post my own later.

They were just recently named the best BBQ in the nation. I read that on Austinist.com last week.

    Opies is pretty damn good.

Food served like they serve it at coopers in llano. You walk by a big smoker full of meat and tell them what you want and they put it on a tray. Pork chops, pork loin, pork ribs, baby back ribs, chicken, pork sausage, jalapano sausage, brisket, and prime ribs are your choices. 4 kinds of fresh cobbler, fresh cake and brownies tempt you before you pay. pinto and butter beans are included with purchase.

We had a 1/2 lb of brisket
    1/2 lb pork loin
And 1/2 rack baby back ribs
A brownie and some blackberry cobbler

All the meat was moist, well cooked and tasty, no need for sauce. The sauce was self serve by the beans and fixings if desired. It was good but the meat was good so I didn't have much.

The pinto beans tasted like my Nanaw cooked them and the cobbler was excellent. My wife and daughter said the brownie was one of the best they ever had.

Overall I'd give Opie's a solid A and I'll be picking some BBQ to go when I pick my daughter up on friday.

They had a write-up in Bon Appetite stating that they were the best place in Texas, if not the country. The hype machine is in full gear.

Yes they do. Bring a minimum of 4 people to make it worthwhile.

And I agree with arjun....Swinging Door's brisket is eh, but their pork ribs are amazing.

So how good is franklins brisket? I have had coopers, opie's,blacks, and mueller's and my brisket is better. Is franklin's worth the wait in line?

Franklin's is similar in quality to Kreuz, Mueller's, Smitty's, etc. If you live in Austin, it's nice because you get that quality without the long drive. It does not, however, compare to Snow's.

    Really?

I had Kreuz a year ago and thought it was absolutely amazing. Didn't really think brisket could get any better. Then I had Snows and realized nothing else in the world mattered.

Kreuz is inconsistent . You have to get there early, if you go late , the brisket is a little dry.

I've had it where Kreuz was amazing.

Its better than Meullers and Blacks (I was at Meullers on Saturday).
I think it's the most tender and I like their expresso sauce.

I think the wait has gone bananas since the Bon Appetit article. What I think he's doing is quality control over quantity. Also people are acting like it's the end of the world and ordering whole briskets.

I have had someone bring me Snows and I reheated it at my place. It was very good, I would think it's amazing if you eat it right there .

However a friend who's had both Franklins and Snows at their respective locations says he thinks Franklin's is better, but not too much better.
