Morey mentioned this on 1560 today, but with respect to Motiejunas.

I wonder if they see the acquisition of all of these "bust" lottery picks as something of that. There have been a number of guys that were abandoned a bit too cheaply too early (Chauncey Billups and Joe Johnson come to mind), and blossomed later.

A couple of points about Flynn:

People should relize McHale actually has the inside scoop on Flynn and probably blessed this deal. Flynn had a decent rookie year, but was hurt last year so his stock is lower than it should be. Granted he's not a pure point guard, he's undersized, not the best shooter, and doesn't do any one thing overwhelmingly well. But he's got a lot of heart, he's a hard woker, he plays good defense (averages a steal per 25 minutes) he's extremely quick (Aaron Brooks quick), and he's got enough talent to be a servicable backup point guard. He's only 22 years old and is just two years removed from being the #6 pick; also he's on a rookie contract which expires after this season. So getting Flynn and Motiejunas (who most agree is a lotto pick), plus getting rid of Brad Miller's remaining $7.5 mil guaranteed, for #23 and the Memphis pick (very heavily protected) is a good deal for Houston. Flynn is only going to get better, I'm sure of it.

Lowry, Dragic (who can actually play off the ball), and Flynn is a very solid group of young PGs.

Getting rid of Miller (over the hill center) and bringing Flynn (still talented 22 years old moved to make room for Rubio) was a sweet move... :D

Most importantly getting the guy you wanted at #20 vs. getting some scrub at #23 + a future 1st round pick that is heavily protected...

This is a great trade from a GM point of view... Rockets got depth at point guard - teams needs 3 point guards on the Roster. Plus with Dotanus, there is a guy whom the Rockets coveted, probably even at 14th....

    2009 representin!!

The Rockets now have 4 of the top 11 players drafted in 2009.

C Hasheem Thabeet - drafted #2 in '09 by Memphis
PG Jonny Flynn - drafted #6 in '09 by Minnesota
PF/C Jordan Hill - drafted #8 in '09 by New York
SG Terrence Williams - drafted #11 in '09 by New Jersey

That's right!!! and were shooting for a few more trades in the offseason for the rest of the scrubs from 09… or are we done with 09 and gonna rape the 2010 draft of all it's scrubs!

The best move Morey made last night was getting rid of Brad Millers corpse and getting something back for it actually. For that I got to say that part was genius.

Remember last season when Brad Miller was the savior that Morey brought in?

So, was buying back the 38th essentially part of the original agreement here?

I mean, did they only include it so the Rockets could send Minnesota cash to get it back...as a way to circumvent trade rules?

Interesting question. The answer probably depends on whether or not Houston initially sent cash to Minnesota in the first deal. I don't remember reading that they did -- but if so, then definitely a way to circumvent the rule.

From what I've heard, we just gave them the pick as we didn't figure there would be anyone good left. When we realized that Chandler was available, Morey went "Oh crap", and bought back the pick so he could get him. Seems to show that we actually expect something from him. Heck, Budinger was the 44th pick, so why not?

Yeah, it sounds that way. Morey probably told Kahn at the outset that he wanted to reserve the right to purchase that pick if someone unexpectedly fell.

The way I see it (based on Morey's comments), the Rockets' draft board probably had their picks rated as follows:

    Marcus Morris: #8-#12 range
    Donatas Montiejunas: around #14
    Chandler Parsons: #25-#28 range

Not exactly like having Patterson at #6, but I'm sure they're pretty happy with how the draft unfolded vis-a-vis their own draft board. At least as happy as you can be being "stuck" at #14 when you're trying hard to move up.

Dragic is clearly the better player at this point, and i don't think getting Flynn makes Dragic "expendable" by any means. Dragic has starter potential, and i don't think Flynn does. That said, they both play backup point, so if we got a great offer for Dragic, or if he needed to be included in a package to get a superstar, I think having Flynn on the roster gives us the flexibility we need to pull the trigger and still be comfortable with our PG depth.
