you can probably walk out the door with a base mustang for 22k... camaro/challenger may be a bit higher

if you don't mind less hp, look into japanese/korean brands... kia forte coupe is great, or hyundai genesis coupe

if you're looking for a used vehicle... the world is yours... c5 vette? :)

Save up your money and spend between 25 and 30 to get something better than a Mazda.

Extremely base if you are talking about with tax included. Invoice is 22K on a V6 with zero options and a manual trans.

buy a used sports car, let someone else take the depreciation hit. besides, it's a used car as soon as you drive it off the lot anyway.:)

    wham-bam thank you m'am

    http://sanantonio.craigslist.org/cto/2411093780.html

(but it's a salvage and you shouldn't even consider it).
There are other deals like this though where they are not salvage titles and the car is in good condition. Probably hard to find on craigslist

My 2007 BMW 335i with 76k miles is probably worth around 20k.

    Sounds about right.

I would get a new accord coupe ex. You can easily get it for 21k and tell them to throw in tint and free oil change for life. It's no BMW driving wise, but at least it looks sporty

Before you buy a used sports car (and by "sports car", I mean something that could actually be considered one), make sure you can keep up with any repairs that may arise on it. It's fine buying a used car, but if you're doing it because you can't buy a new one, just make sure the repairs/maintenance aren't too much for you as well.

I have a 2009 Mazda 6, and absolutely love it. It's the best car I've ever owned, hands down.

But I'll be honest: it's a fairly sporty sedan, but it's not a true sports car. Even the Mazda 3 (which in many ways, is basically a smaller, zippier version of the Mazda 6) isn't a true sports car. They're not built to win any races.

Now, the Mazdaspeed3 is a different story...

I agree. I've never driven one, but the Mazdaspeed 3 is pretty beastly. Those 0-60 and 1/4 mile times are basically equivalent to my Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo, which is absolutely a true sports car.

I'd look at a Mazdaspeed 3 or a Honda Civic Si. Two really fun sports cars that are reasonably priced and have all sorts of scoot to them. Probably still need to find a slightly used one to get to your price point though.

good choices. The VW is a good car but is more costly for maintenance and not as reliable.

and second for the mazda3speeds, they are a lot of bang for the buck

They stick to the road and curves like its on a rail, great handling. Ride like an old fashion metal wheel roller skate.

Do NOT get the Jetta. I have two friends with recent Jettas (2008 & 2010), and they've both had major electrical problems. Not worth the trouble, IMHO.

The Mazda 3 and 6 are very, very good cars, but check out that Mazdaspeed3. You'll probably like it.

If you want something really fast, you could buy my friend's modded Impreza - it'll do 12-13 seconds quarters at the track. I think he's looking for 6-7k for it.

Only problem, it's probably fast enough to get you into trouble.

It's not a sports car if it is front wheel drive. Also make sure it is a manual transmission.

Get something like a used 350Z to fit your budget. The 6 cylinder engine that the 350Z runs on is bullet-proof.
