I hope this isn't true. I'd rather keep the picks or trade one (or both) for a 2012 1st rounder.

I'll wait and see what happens. I am not invested in any of the players in the draft at all like I have been previous years.

i was thinking that he might just trade #23 for a future pick, but given the weakness of this years group, he may only be able to land a second rounder for the pick. he might as well throw it in with #14.

if he's moving up to leverage a player against one of the 3 teams he would leapfrog, then he might get a 2012 pick out of it and still get the guy he wanted to draft at #14. that would increase the worth of 23rd pick from a future second rounder to a future first rounder.

    Same here.

Stay put, and if the people we want are gone by the time we pick. Trade the pick.

Imo, I think we should try to stock pile draft picks for the 2012 draft, much deeper.

    A few thoughts:

    1. The 23rd pick this year probably isn't worth much. In fact, there are probably teams late in the 1st round (Bulls and Celtics?) from whom you can probably acquire their pick relatively cheaply if you really have your eyes on someone. You might even buy a pick just for cash. Even Charlotte's 19th and Minny's 20th picks are said to be available for the right price.

So, the Rockets may very well trade the 23rd in a package and later get, say, the Celtics 25th back in a separate deal for a modest price.

    2. Besides, the Rockets probably are not desperate to add too many rookies to the roster. They already got 11 guys under contract. Even if they make a couple roster reduction trades, there are still plenty of guys on the roster.

    3. Given 1 and 2 above, I can see the Rockets being quite happy to throw in the 23rd in even for a modest increase in draft position just to make sure they get the guy they want.

    4. Remember last year when Morey said they were trying to move up for Patterson (after the Cousins/Favors-types were gone), didn't get anyone to bite but lucked out with him dropping to 14th anyway? It seems you can never really know where teams stand on picks (especially this year with all the possible trade talks), and Morey is willing to spend the right amount of assets to move up to make sure he gets the guy he wants, even if there is a chance that guy does drop to 14th.

    5. I don't think the Rockets just have one guy in mind, but there could be a few guys available at either 8th or 10th (or another spot) for whom the team would be willing to move up.

they could get Alec Burks with the 10th pick, if that is the plan then I would be happy

It may be more to do with that they think they'll get a salary hold at #23 and not much more

And it may be because Marcus Morris will be on the board at 10 and they really like him as one of the 5 or 6 best players in this draft, just like Patterson last year...but they know he won't be available at 14.

They dont know for sure, but they most likely have a good indication. If their guy falls to 14 then there is obviously no deal necessary. More than likely Morey has 3, 4, or even 5 potential deals on the table with multiple teams if the right circumstances present themselves.

The 10 for 14, & 23 is probably just one senario on the table. However, you have to realize that many teams like Houston do NOT reveal their hand and so it is very possible especially in this draft that they might get their guy at 14 anyways just like with Patterson last year.

    side bar:

something tells me they're looking to move up for singleton. he's an upperclassmen with an nba body and can play right away. seems like a typical rockets pick. small forward with size that can guard multiple positions means he fills a hole in the roster. GS and UTA are rumored to like the guy. makes sense that we would have to leapfrog these two teams to be assured of drafting him.

not the sexy choice but i'm getting the same vibe i got last year about patterson.

fellas, if Morey does this deal, then it would be a great trade!

Think about it, the number 23 pick is useless. Don't we have tonnes of number 23 picks on our roster already? Jordan Hill, Terrence Williams, Goran Dragic, Courtney Lee, alllll those guys are the kind of guys you can expect to get in the 23 draft slot. Whats the point of getting another one? To develop? How many of those guys will have the kind of upside that is actually worth thinking about that can actually make us value those players? Morey probably wouldn't blink twice if he had to chuck the 23rd pick in for free in a random trade deal, because it is just NOT WORTH MUCH.

For example, if we drafted a 7 foot prospect with the 23rd pick, and that would be a big stretch, someone like Jordan Hill. Would we really give that guy much play time to develop him? No. Because the "upside vs. sacrificing wins for development" value is just not there. It would be foolish to think about guys like Jordan Hill too much if you can move up 4 spots IN THE LOTTERY.

This is not moving up from the 49th pick to the 45th pick. IT IS MOVING UP 4 SPOTS IN THE LOTTERY. The lottery is a whole different ballpark. If we wanted to get the 10th pick straight up, then we'd have to have lost 10 or more games last season, and if I can just surrender up the 23rd pick knowing that my team can still go all out to get wins and at the same time ensuring a very good pick, then why not?

In short, the 23rd pick is worthless, and moving up 4 spots in the lottery is nothing to scoff at.

I don't see that much of a difference between him and his twin. I would prefer to go after a player who might be less polished but with genuine upside.

This trade isnt bad at all. Morey is good at evaluating talent. He can find a first round talent at #38. Does Chase Budinger look like a 2nd Round 44th OVR pick right now?

    Completely non-related:

    Vucevic lottery-bound?
USC center Nikola Vucevic has had as impressive a rise as anyone, and sources said he could wind up being a lottery pick since Houston is high on him at No. 14. The combination of his strong play in workouts, legitimate size (6-foot-11 3/4 in with shoes, 260 pounds) and the lack of depth at center in this draft has helped his cause.

I'm getting tired of talking about him(I'm sure you guys are tired of me talking as well), but I really have to question if some of you guys have seen them play at all. Markieff is a F/C. He lumbers around upright with mannerisms like Thabeet. Marcus is closer to a SG than your classical PF ala Patterson. The only thing they have in common is they can both shoot from outside. And well.. they look alike.

Saleem I have to agree with you. They drafted Patterson last year with idea of Yao being healthy and Adelman as coach. With McHale they may be more inclined in not going with the safe pick and draft more towards upside.

Kanter, Jonas, Leonard, Vesley will be all gone. Whats the point? Biyombo or Donatas might be available. I will be furious if we end up with Donatas.

Maybe Morey would use the 10th pick in a larger trade?
