Fair enough. I have to admit my exposure to all these international players is very limited. I'm just your 'Average Joe College/NBA fan'. Every year during the draft I'm always doing my best to learn as much as I can, but it's very difficult whenever Chad Ford is one of your top resources!

Not necessarily disagreeing but the problem with this type of strategy is you need a suitor that covets somebody badly enough to make a deal happen. And at pick #14 in what's largely considered a weak draft you aren't necessarily guaranteed to find that.

But you need a team willing to bite the bullet and likely surrender some sort of future first-rounder with limited protection. There's gotta be some incentive in there for us to do it and that's it. And unless there's some sort of no-brainer on hand - I have a hard time picturing teams willing to do that.

I don't think anyone has proposed that it's a shallow draft, just that it's a weak draft. Weak drafts don't affect the 14th pick as much as a shallow draft does, unless you want to move up.

I think the Rockets like every other team has plans A through Z right now with numerous contingency plans. It all depends on how things fall into place.

Can't wait for the draft. :)

In John Givony's latest Yahoo 4.0 mock, he states the rockets don't appear to be all that excited about anyone in this draft and are heavily exploring moving the #14 pick in exchange for a 2012 1st round pick according to sources.

    Id love to move up!

But in this draft... 8 and 14 aren't much different.

Unless we can either get Leonard or Vesely with the 8th pick

Wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, at all. I'd do it in a flash.

The rockets would still have the 23rd pick which seems like much better value for a somewhat similar talent they could get at #14 and their second round pick.

Can someone explain why a team would be willing to make a guarantee to a college player? Is it to keep that player (i) from dopping out of the draft or (ii) doing additional workouts with other teams that might pick the player before the first team can do so?

Agreed, agreed. Just saying the 'trade out' strategy seems to hinge on another team initiating the talks -- or at least that's the way I see it. I mean, it's not like if a Biyombo type slips to pick #14 DM is going to start calling up teams and saying "So yeah, Biyombo is available at 14. Can you believe that? Give us your unprotected 2012 first-rounder".

Doesn't seem to be the best way to gain leverage. You would think the best way to handle this type of situation would be to wait for teams to call us and simply put up a smoke screen by indicating we're ready to take him.

....or maybe I'm just over-thinking this lol.

I could be wrong, but I will be shocked if Morey uses all three picks. At the most I could see the rockets adding two rookies next season, but definetly not three. I'm in the camp that if Morey can't move up from the #14 pick, he then trades it away for a future pick. Or we could see several Euro stashes.

I'd love to also pick up the Pistons' 2nd rounder in the trade (14 + 23 for 8 + 33).

That way if we are targeting Valanciunas at 8, with the 2 high 2nd rounders we could pick another Euro to stash, and still have a pick to grab a 1st round slider.

Its being reported by Givony that the Bucks #10 pick for Houstons #14 and #23 could be in play. Don't know if 14 and 23 could get them as high as #8 and thats without asking for anything else.

Depending on whose available and how strong the Rockets preference is, I'm thinking the Rockets also made similar offers to Sacramento and Charlotte. Not sure if these teams would take 14+23 or ask for more. Perhaps they'd want some sort of salary relief or monetary benefits. Charlotte, in particular, probably has a few guys they want off their team salary (Diop, Carroll, maybe Najera, maybe even S. Jackson)

I don't think moving up to 8 in this draft is worth giving up 14 and 23. If we're talking about the top 5, maybe. This is just an extremely weak draft with almost no impact players. What you can get at 8 is likely not going to be appreciably better than what you can get at 14. What you can get at 23 is probably someone you can stash in Europe for a few years...or at least a prospect that can sit and learn for a year or 2.

Assuming Jimmer breaks through to the top 10, which is a good possibility, Draftexpress's top 10 would look pretty spot on. Maybe not the exact order, but the players. That would mean Marcus Morris drops to us at 10. HIYOOOO

So your saying Marcus Morris is Houstons target or is that who you would draft at #10?
