6.25/10 I wanted the critics to be wrong about this movie but IMHO they were pretty much spot on with a few exceptions. I also wanted to love it, since I am a GL fan, but I was disappointed. Now I had VERY high expectations and as a action movie it was fine but just to many flaws to ignore. The writing was pretty mediocre, GL has a very unique story and while some of the backstory was well done, to much wasn't explored enough. Blake Lively was pretty bad and mis-cast badly. Ryan Reynolds looks the part but just doesn't come off as Hal Jordan very well, still he isn't that big of an issue. Mark Strong was a huge bright spot, he was fantastic and owned his role. I wanted this to be an epic so badly and give me the same feeling I got when Christopher Reeves saved Margot Kidder from the helicopter on top of the Daily Planet or Christian Bale's first appearance as Batman but just didn't get that feeling. That said, it still had enough of it done right that a sequel could be fantastic. Spoiler My only issue with Sinestro was his turn, they just turned him without a clue or hint as to why. Unless your a GL fan, you won't really understand. Some more explanation before he takes the ring and the beginnings the Sinestro Corps would have been better.
I went in with the expectation that it would be one of the worst movies I've ever seen (I also had just watched Battle: Los Angeles, so perhaps that's why I'm being so lenient). At any rate, it wasn't nearly as bad as people are making it out to be. It's much worse than a lot of the recent superhero movies because the bar has been set pretty high. Bottom line is, I enjoyed it and so did my girlfriend -- 7/10. Notes: don't waste your money on seeing it in 3D. If you're going to see a summer flick with some nice effects to blow your time, but don't have high expectations on plot you should be okay. Also I'm a Marvel guy so I know bits and pieces of GL's backstory, but not enough to be annoyed by continuity changes or what not. For example some of the changes in First Class really irked me. One thing I will say is I expected Parallax to be more of a threat, but whatever. [edit: Like most movies coming out currently I felt like they showed virtually all of the cool stuff in the trailers. Basically every construct worth seeing was shown in the trailers, the ones that weren't were disappointing.]
Not really, I have a scale. I'm just not anal. Nor am I a pseudo-intellectual trying to pass myself off as a movie critic. Those douchebags take themselves way too seriously. There are some movies that I straight up watch just for eye candy -- and I can be perfectly okay with that. There are others that no matter how good they look I can't stand what I'm watching. I'm also not going to sit through some 3 hour drama epic that people tell me is amazing but bores me (I fell asleep maybe 10-15 minutes into Benjamin Button a least twice). To each his own.
Movie critics watch tons and tons of movies as part of their job. I understand why they'd be less enthusiastic about generic, formulaic, "eye candy". There's only so much of that one can take.
No argument here. I don't mean to imply that all are bad. There are just some that come off as god's gift and, are not pleased by anything. I for example play a lot of video games, but I also realize that even some of the crappiest ones may have aspects that are good. Or others may even find it fantastically enjoyable. Feel me?
exactly. Movies are pure entertainment. An extreme in depth analysis is for unhappy miserable people that wish to find flaws in everything, if they aren't getting paid for it. Its a ****ing superhero movie. Some real turds on here. A movie like super 8 was bad imo because it just got really predictable, cheesy, and extremely boring.
If you yourself enjoy the movie, who cares what the critics think... Unless You yourself worked on the movie then I can understand the anger... The only critic that matters is Roger Ebert, god amongst men!!!!
Mark Strong was great. I almost didn't recognize him. Spoiler What do you mean they Turned him? I am not a huge GL reader but Sinestro was one of the best GLs of his time. I don't think he started off the series as 'bad'. Rocket River
Spoiler After the credits they showed Sinestro putting the yellow ring on implying he'll be the sequel's villain.
It's an OK movie. Nothing great, but not a waste of time for two hours. Blake Lively maybe hot, but she can't act...at all.
Basically what mrm32 said. Spoiler He becomes GL greatest rival and creates Sinestro's corps which is basically a super team of villians to rival the Latern Corps...will vs fear again but higher stakes. They really didn't go into his relationship with the corps and GL enough, which explains alot into his turn to evil.
Script was very lazy, tone was kind of all over the place. Mark Strong's the best thing about this whole movie, shame he didn't get much screen time. I think it would have worked best if the majority of the film had occurred in space because I found all the Earth set stuff pretty generic and weak. Also, I could have sworn there was supposed to be a cameo from my favorite GL but I never saw him, Spoiler John Stewart was supposed to show up and interact with Jordan. I know they cast the part.
"Why, yes!" - Well done. About 75% of the entire movie theater emptied before the scene after the credits that tells a lot about the story. I saw it, though.
I always get on my phone and google to check if there's something after the credits; was kinda upset there was nothing after First Class
