We don't really have a good "deficit/budget thread" and I hate making new ones so I'm resurrecting this one. Sorry. Just a quick tidbit that I found interesting. A step in the right direction, methinks. End all corporate subsidies. Senate vote marks start of end for ethanol subsidies
Major failure by the Obama admin to threaten to veto this thing. These subsidies absolutely have to go - the prospect of them going caused corn prices to drop dramatically this week, which lowers food inflation across the board and helps the poor. Ethanol was one of the worst ideas from government and needs to be killed.
I guess you are only 82% libertarian. Careful the 18% may be just subsidizing disabled adults and kids and sick old people who have no market value.
the funny thing is obama even during the campaign way back in 08 said something to the effect of corn ethanol being not the best solution. takes to much energy to make. i thought this was settled.
Not that we should be eating corn in the first place (or certainly not encouraging people to it eat more with lower prices), but yes, ethanol is teh dumb.
well the other reason for agriculture subsidies is to insure the food supply. but yeah, corn has added to the obesity epidemic
My setup http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2010/11/13/weekinreview/deficits-graphic.html?choices=zvxtq5lt 43% tax 57% spending.
yeah I would kinda hope too that if this passes, they would start looking at Big Oil subsidies---something the Obama admin. would definitely be on board with. That I am quite content with. I'm a HUGE supporter of repealing ethanol subsidies. that+oil subsidies+USDA subsidies in general+foreign military aid to Israel are my four holy planks of "repeal that stuff now!" unfortunate that the fourth is only partially covered (and implies we should probably reduce support for the Peace Corps and food aid, which is what America is doing), and the second isn't even mentioned at all---but, heck, I'll play the game again.
