I love the smell of new books. But I love my eReader as well. I don't, however, go around sniffing that.
I am one of those ebook converts. Reading on my phone is not nearly as terrible as I thought and ebooks are so so so much more convenient. I will miss the fact that I will not be able to build up my own (physical) library through the years. though.
If people here liked to read as well as they say, the GARM wouldn't be so gosh darn awful. Label me a skeptic.
Even old manuals, magazines or comic books. What is it that makes printed material smell so good? Rotting paper?
Lulz. I'm not sure. I cannot, however, stand the smell of newspaper. I know it's weird, but I can tell a difference. When I was younger my mother used to take me on her paper route and I would lay in the back of the van filled with 500+ Sunday newspapers. It was my job to pull up on the plastic, getting rid of as much air as possible, twisting, and then handing it to her for the throw. Nothing like getting a face full of newspaper smell while sitting on a bunch of them to make you want to vomit. Maybe it was because I was super tired and not actually sitting in a seat.
I read a lot, even though recently I've just been reading graphic novels. Although I love traditional books, and there's nothing like a good library for ambiance, I can't deny that reading digital books is much more convenient and less cumbersome. I still buy books- one of the few upsides to living in Dallas-Fort Worth is that there is a Half Price books on every corner, and usually they have a book or two in their clearance section that I pick up for a buck. I'll also listen to the occasional audio book when I am driving a lot for work.
I've read more since getting the Kindle app for my iphone than I ever did before (Im 42). Now I read almost every day.
I read about 1.5 books per month. I'm an e-book convert, too. I love my Nook, and have read the last 5 books or so on it. I travel a lot and love that I can just throw the Nook in my briefcase, instead of 2 or 3 books.
I love to read. Always have since I was small. I'd get upset with the required reading in high school because it usually meant I had to stop reading whatever I was in the middle of to concentrate on whatever it was they wanted me to read. This irritated me to no end. I don't own an e-reader, and I can certainly see the convenience of having one and I'm not opposed to them, but I can't imagine paying for two copies of the same book in two formats. I might get an e-reader when buying a physical book comes with a digital version. This might be an option now (?)....I really don't pay attention since I don't have an e-reader anyway. Books take up a lot of space, but there is nothing like owning a good library, and I love physically owning books.
I've always read, and just recently converted to reading e-books. I've actually read more since I did. I can go on a trip have two non-fiction novels, two fiction novels, and one or two travel books about where I'm goign, as well as a magazine and newspaper all on the Kindle which weighs less than a normal paper back. I've found books that are free to download that are hard to find in book stores. Because of various user groups I've found authors I didn't know existed and have enjoyed reading. It's so convenient and with the e-ink it's like reading a real book. My favorite books I will always keep a hard copy of, but from now on I'll be buying and using almost exclusively e-books.
Certainly a huge plus for digital content. Its small and you can carry a library in your pocket. It's great if people are reading more because of this.
E-readers are so cheap now, it no longer makes sense to lug around books. I bought my Nook off buy.com for like $85. It's light, doesn't take up much space in my travel bag, and the battery lasts for days.
