Considering that the NBA is home to the top international players in the world, Dirk, Manu, Scola, Yao, Gasols, Bogut etc. and many foreign players spend time preparing for the NBA overseas, I would say it's safe to call them World Champions.
Didn't the MLS All Stars (30-50th best league in the world*) beat Chelsea in a preseason match? Is that substantial evidence that the MLS is actually closer to some of the European soccer leagues? *OHMSS. OHMSS Irrefutable Guide to Sports. 43rd ed. Vol. 19. Propaganda Foundation. Print
As far back as I can remember, that's what it has always been "world champions" . The announcers, the teeshirts and the hats. So if you're a 10 year old little dirk watching knight rider, the "world champion" label is going to stick with you.
KENNY SMITH ON TNT SAID IT SHOULD BE "WORLD CHAMPIONS" BECAUSE PLAYERS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD PLAY HERE!!! Gosh, calm down.
Since they never had to go through the Brisbane Fighting Roos, Dallas' ring will always have an asterisk next to it. Pshhhhht.
if this were true then their top players would be entering the NBA draft. But i guess even after that, FIBA would still be superior to the NBA... That's why all the top players want to play there rather than the NBA.
Well, most people don't care about basketball outside the United States except maybe China. NBA Champions is the term I prefer. Basketball is not relevant in other countries other than China to just call yourself World Champions. You go to a bar in England and tell them you're the World Champions of the NBA and see what they tell you.

So if Dirk said it it must be true. I like your logic, if one European says something all Europeans should feel the same way..... Shall we not use this logic for Americans. Let's get this straight. Is Dallas the best Basketball team in the world this year? Yes. Are they the World champions? No. It isn't the world championship, it is the nba finals. Let's look at soccer. Is the team that wins the Champions league the best team in the world.. Probably. Are they the world champions? No. See it is not that difficult. Just because many people around the NBA use the term World champions, doesn't make it true.
true, technically they arent the world champions but if you're willing to admit they are the best in the world then why have a problem with them calling themsleves the world champions? is FIBA even relevant in terms of the NBA with all the international stars flocking to the NBA? it's like complaining that they didnt ever play any D-league teams for the championship so cannot be proclaimed true champions. Anyway, if you want to get really technical, they really are the NBA World Champions b/c it's the NBA not FIBA. granted there are only NBA teams in the US and Canada (Toronto).
As a German I am personally offended by this. This is the most ridiculous statement I have ever heard. You don't have a *****ing clue what you're talking about. How could you possibly call Dirk a moron? Do you know anything at all about his character? Jesus Christ. What an incredibly dumb statement.
I have a problem with it since it is not a tournament where teams from all over the world compete. The only team that compete are from the USA (and canada). So it is not a World championship. There is a sport Korfball (just forget it it is a stupid sport) there are basically two countries who even slightly care for it Belgium and the Netherlands. The team that wins the dutch competition is the best team in the world without a doubt, but we call them the champions of the Netherlands not champions of the world. Do the teams from north America, Asia, Africa, and Australia matter in soccer? No but we do have a tournament were they can join in. it is called the world championships. I do not see the need for calling them world champions. They are the champions of the NBA, just call them that, if the other competitions do not matter, it should be the same honor being the World champions as being the NBA champions. This is the same reason why I hate that there is a miss universe. we look at people from our planet, so just call it miss planet earth.
But don't you see the contradiction in the term "NBA World Champions" itself? NBA means National Basketball Association, so by definition, this is not a World tournament. So how does proclaiming its champion the NBA World Champion make sense? Because they are the only NBA champions in the world? Really, I see the argument for saying "who cares" but actively defending such an oxymoronic label...
Easy, OHMMS & his various MPD manifestations, and a number of other people obsessed with location of home arenas as dispositive.
