Yeah, guess so. That quote surprised me. If I was his PR firm, I would have been in his ear the second after the horn sounded: "this is your chance to turn it around. Praise the Mavs, talk about working harder than ever for next year. Then praise the Mavs again. Talking about learning, then shut up." But... nope. I'm a little surprised he went to the other-people-have-pathetic-lives thing. Just, yuck. I don't hate him, but I kind of pity him. Arrested development.
Rep'ed. After reading your post B-Bob I actually did pity him too. It's uncertain whether he'll ever "get it" or not but I certainly hope he starts learning from his failures. Not being able to acquiesce his mindset with his talent is a tragedy for the NBA.

I dont have a problem with what he's said before or after the Finals... He lost, he said what he said, now handle your business... Its a job 1st and foremost...He shouldnt have to take his work home with him... If I were Lebron, I just wouldnt talk to the media except when he has to... unless its to endorse a product... Mostly irrelevant in my opinion. Any change that Lebron undergoes has to come from introspection. He has to mentally make himself amenable to change. You could surround him with the proper environment right now and it wouldn't matter. He doesn't see himself as the problem. I hope for basketball's sake he comes to realize that for all the hype around him, he's accomplished nothing substantial. That the way he does things has neither won him a ring nor garnered any respect. If I'm him right now (and had his emotional development) I'm probably lost. This is truly the first time where I've felt the overwhelming pressure and failed miserably. Everybody hates me and revels in my failure. I need to improve (jumpers/post game) but it doesn't seem like that those are the sole reasons I failed. He's just a big kid and he acts like it. Like any rebellious kid, you can tell them what they're doing wrong til you're blue in the face but if they don't accept responsibility for themselves it doesn't matter.

Appreciate that some folks like this post, but I just read the entire transcript that his quote was included in. It was just that one nasty bit, where he was mostly classy otherwise. Said great things about the Mavs underrated D and how hard he's going to work now, etc. So he hit some of the right notes. They had asked him pretty directly about people rooting against him, etc. He still shouldn't have said that, in terms of PR and maturity, but it makes a little more sense.
Funny thing is I think he would have made a great anti-hero for the league. He would have been more marketable than Jordan if he won this year and each of the next few years maintaining that level of arrogance. People would pay to see him fail (like they did this year) and support for all the other contenders would jump because everyone wants to see Vader taken down. But alas, the best we can hope for is that he follows the road to redemption storyline.

Here's the gist of what he discussed... -The difference b/w this year and Celtics series: There was nowhere to hide this year. -Last year, series ended and The Decision stuff began. -Asked LB 30 times this year about that series, never got a good answer. -Nowhere to run from the results. -No real concern from Riley that they acquired damaged goods. -LB needs to confront demons, needs someone to help him with mental side of game. Has trainers, chefs, business managers, but no one to help with mental part of game. -Doesn't know if LB gets it that it's his fault that the heat lost - that he has built a culture of blaming everyone else for failures, surrounded himself with people that support that. -More complicated than just saying "grow up" Lebron. -NBA writing greats comparing LBJ to Wilt vs. Celtics when Wilt took like two shots.
That's the problem that athletes have to face. Any athlete for that matter. The media are a bunch of pricks that love controversy. If they see a quote that looks a little bit odd, they will take that **** right out of context and put that quote on the headlines of the papers the next morning.
