    Foreign:

City of God (Cidade de Deus) Everyone should watch this one, a classic and a true "gangster flick" with great cinematography

    <iframe width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/yJdW1TevoyA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The Lives of Others (Das Leben der Anderen), Intriguing and clever political thriller

    <iframe width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/n3_iLOp6IhM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The Proposition, The truest "western" in ages, even though it takes place in Australia. Gritty, violent, no holds barrel, but never just for the hell of it. Great, great film.

    <iframe width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/G7V-CW_SUos" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

    Underrated:

The Assassination of Jesse James, loves this movie. Cinematography and score were top notch. Like watching a moving painting of Jesse James. Has an eerie aura about it the whole way through that keeps you absorbed.

    <iframe width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/qp2ppYB9fDo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Zodiac, My favorite Fincher movie. Love how he ties rich introspective studies of the characters with the investigation of the case. Epitome of a suspense.

    <iframe width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/bEvnwKFUnI0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

    Indie:

The Squid and the Whale, a low-key, dark humor about a dysfunctional family. Good acting, and Jesse Eissebergs indie breakout

    <iframe width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/JRkK5n2mkvg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

American Splendour, quircky comedy about an unlikeable Paul Giamatti, plays out like a comic book sorta, unique storytelling

    <iframe width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/APpxQm7sH5k" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Mysterious Skin, very difficult movie to watch but I don't regret seeing it. Very emotional and hits the heart. Ending almost made me cry. Joseph Gordon-Levitt's acting makes the movie.

I'll throw Adaptation into the underrated list above. Trippy movie with a story that you never where it will go next. Nicholas Cage is excellent.

Thank you theglide, I have seen all of those except The Proposition, Squid and the Whale, Lives of Others, and Mysterious Skin. I'll check those out.

Indie or independent films are simply films made outside of the studio system. If a film was made by Fox, WB, etc., then it is not an indie film. If it was made independent of the studios, then it is an indie film, hence the name. No more or less should be made of it than that.

Any comments about Mike Leigh? The ultimate indie movie master?

Check out Four Lions. British indie film. Probably the funniest picture I have seen in the past ten years.

All really great movies. JCVD is a really surprising movie. Saw it at the Alamo draft house a couple of years ago and was really shocked on how good it is.

Before Sunrise, free flowing and spontaneous, dialogue-driven romance

I just saw this and the After Sunset movie the other day. I liked the second one better but they were both surprisingly good. Just good old fashioned acting and story telling.

My input is in bold for what it's worth. The 5 hour version of Fanny and Alexander is better, but it's definitely a time commitment.

I doubt it constitutes as an Indie film, but I watched Biutiful last night and it is easily one of the best movies I have ever seen.

I doubt many people will rent it because I don't remember hearing about it in theaters.

    Check it out.
