Alright so I was just on youtube watching videos when all of a sudden my browsers close and my firewall was randomly turned off. Some scanner program popped up which was obviously fake so I immediately turned off my laptop. When I tried to turn it back on it went to the start up screen then it goes into a flickering dash which just stays there like that. It won't start up or nothing. :(

    Help me Clutchfans. :(

Can you start the OS is Safe Mode? Fire up the laptop and hold down F8 until you're prompted to start the computer in Safe Mode. If you're let back in you'll need to clean up that spyware. What anti-virus program do you have installed?

It's also a mini notebook and it doesn't have an external drive so that cd is not an option. :(

Take out the hard drive and put it back in and reset bios settings if that does not work.

Horrible software. He's better off with AVG or Avast.

It's not horrible. I haven't had any viruses with the program.

The only thing--and this may be why you don't like it--it is a resource monster. And it will slow your computer down. But it does what it is supposed to do, otherwise.

so does AVG and Avast, for a very small portion of the resources Norton uses up. Norton and Mcafee may work, but they both do so at a tremendous resource cost, which may be fine for new systems with lots of ram and powerful quad core cpus, but why not use something that doesnt require that?

    To the OP

If you are truely clueless, take it to someone, you are just gonna mess it up worse. There aint no way we can walk you thru a repair online.

Id tell you to use your restore cd, but didnt you say it had no cd drive?
If thats the case, get an external one and do a restore.

Follow those directions, then boot TO the USB. This way your hard drive isn't booting, so your viruses aren't starting. It's just sitting there and you can scan it/delete files to your heart's content.

Tons and tons and tons of tools in this software to get your PC right. If this thing can't do it, you're probably hosed.

You have to have some antivirus. Like everyone said next time get Avira(my choice) AVG, or Avast. I also recommend Malwarebytes in addition to the antivirus. Surely you know someone who can help. I am that guy at work where everyone brings me in their infested kids lap top to clean up. Surely you have a friend or co worker that is the same.

Can you go into detail about this.

Removing norton would be a bonus.

Microsoft Security Essentials works fine as well. Better than AVG.
