I've always been athletic (playing semi-pro soccer in Europe) but never joined a gym before.
I've now started working out 4-5 times a week doing 2hour sessions in a gym with a friend of mine.

I have never took any kind of products, but wondered if I should start.

Do any of you use some? If yes, do you see/feel an improvement? And what type of product would you recommend?

    Thanks!

I take ON whey and casein protein daily... I think at this point it helps me maintain the bulk I've put on and doesn't really help me add any more. I've been lifting for 5+ years and I have a lot of trouble achieving new PRs any more. I've tried changing my workouts all the time over the last 2 years... none of them help me achieve bigger gains.

i think i've hit the wall for my genetics/frame. I think the only way i could achieve gains at this point is to eat a **** load (i already eat more than enough) and gain fat with muscle - which I'm not interested in doing. One of my buddies is doing that and has gotten a lot stronger - but it came with a huge gut. he literally eats until he wants to puke and he's pleased with his strength gains. Doesn't really care about the fat gain. to each his own.

I've started taking protein as a meal supplement plus after workouts and I can notice a drastic difference in my strength and endurance. My physical stature though has experienced little to no change. It depends why you want to use it and what stage you are at.

If you're just starting to workout you shouldnt be worried about muscle-enhancing supplements. Actually start working out, increase your calories and protein. That's going to increase your muscle on it's own and you may find that's all you need.

Also, "protein" products aren't really going to give you that much of a benefit. They're basically meal replacements, dinner in powder, not something that's more powerful than regular food. Use it due to convenience more than anything, not because you think it'll help you increase muscle size.

There are other products thaat arent just protein powder though, but i don't use them, so im not sure how affective they are. The way i see it, you shouldnt be messing with them unless you've maxed out or are close to maxing out your natural muscle building potential. When amateur lifters or average people have trouble increasing muscle size, it's usually do to their workout routine or lack of calories, not because they're maxing out their genetic potential.

On Whey Protein (Cookies & Cream is awesome!) is an excellent way to add protein without the fat to your diet. I drink two of those shakes a day. I'd recommend it if you're lifting.

Why does the only "no" option have to include "it's rubbish". I don't use workout products or proteins, but I don't think they're rubbish - I just don't work out that seriously. I'd rather put, "no, I'm not that motivated, but I do workout occasionally" or something.

I used protein for a while when I was really into working out but after a while I quit.

That coincided with me deciding that 1hr of gym per day and 2 protein shakes a day wasn't worth my time/money. I'm a runner with a runner's body; no need to pretend I'm something I'm not.

My opinion is you should always drink a protein shake (i.e. 25 grams of protein) immediately after a weightlifting workout. Why put all that work into a workout session breaking down your muscles if you are not providing enough protein for muscle repair? I use Optimum Whey Vanilla and Double Rich Chocolate powders. Seems to work pretty well for me. I've packed on a good amount of muscle and made some good gains in the last 6 months. I also have used ABB Pure Pro 50...which are 50 grams of protein in a single pre-made shake. I'll drink half of one of those and use the other half later. The Vanilla, Chocolate, and Cookies n Cream are all decent (I prefer the Cookies n Cream). I think I dig the Optimum Whey Vanilla the most out of all of them.

I know the general rule of thumb is a gram of protein for every pound of body weight if you are trying to pack on muscle. I don't go that far, however. Max I've done is two shakes on a workout day and one shake on off-days...on top of whatever else I eat. I mix the powder with about 8 fluid ounces of skim milk. I also like to drink a shake after a good 30 minute run.

It's not rubbish to use protein shakes or anything. I think it's stupid to use jack3d or anything like that.

I personally don't drink protein shakes anymore. I try and get my protein intake through food rather than shakes.

Quicker absorption for mornings, post workout.

Easier to increase your total protein intake because liquids are less filling.

Drink enough water and you should be fine using protein and/or creatine.

I used Zero Carb Isopure bc it has the best taste but is a horrible value. Using On whey now and maintaining a high lean protein diet.
