Which combo is best to counter the Heat trio? Credit to Drew_Le for the initial discussion. I've taken into account the suggestions from that thread. Seems Howard is on 90% of the teams. Since poll choices are limited to 10, I went with combos of the players below. I know there could be way more combos but due to poll limit, this is the best I could come up with. For last choice, I went with what Drew suggested. Guard/Distributor: CP3, D-Will, Rose Forward/Scorer: Dirk, Durant, Melo Post: Howard
Must be a Scoring PG: Deron Williams A nice match up for LeBron: Carmelo Anthony A nice match up for Wade: Kobe Bryant That would be hella fun to watch.
I went with CP3, Durant, Howard. CP3 can score if needed but with Durant on the wings and Howard in the post, a pass first guard is essential. Penetrate and break the defense and he has either Howard in the post or Durant on the perimeter. I chose Durant over Dirk as he is younger and more athletic. Dirk may be the better player atm but Durant has yet to reach his ceiling. Melo is just not efficient enough.
Durant will get shut down and exposed by LeBron. He'll just chuck up shots. Howard, yeah no one will stop him except if the PG is terrible but you have CP3. Though CP3 might have a hard time if Wade's guarding him.
I think a lot of those combos could work with the right role players and coach. Any of those PGs could destroy Bibby/Chalmers on both sides of the court, and of course Howard would do his thing against Miami's bigs. So the decision for me is between Durant/Melo/Dirk. I think Durant right now is too mentally and physically weak to have LeBron and Wade take turns guarding him. Melo and Dirk are both great offensively and nothing too special defensively but I would probably pick Dirk just because of the PF position and to have 2 of your best players be bigs.
You need to pound the inside as much as possible So Dirk plus Howard is a must. Because I have so much offense inside with those two, i will need either CP3 or Deron Williams to facilitate but can also create if necessary. Chris Paul has slowed down a bit and was really inconsistent offensively this season. So I went with D WIll, Dirk and Howard. You don't really want a slightly inferior player like Melo or Durant matching up with Lebron, You can't win in that situation the best possible thing is a push. You want to stack the positions where Heat is the weakest.
CP3 Martin Howard Great ball distribution, good interior defense, and good scoring. You need to make Wade work on defense. Martin does just that. You need someone who can defend the rim and force LeBron, and Wade to take jumpers. Howard does that. You need shooters, and a quality defender at the 3. CP3 / Dragic Martin / Lee Battier / Budinger Patterson / Hill Howard / Hayes Now to make this team happen Morey has: Kyle Lowry 4-5 first round picks over the next two years Luis Scola Thabeet Williams Miller Cap space for players like Battier, and Hayes I could by every buy every lotto ticket and not win anything before this happens. So keep Lowry and sign Howard. That has a tiny, but realistic chance of happening. Maybe if the Hornets lost David West, and Landry only wanted to play for Houston then they would really want Patterson and Lowry...
I still think the looming work stoppage is the best way to put a dent in their legacy. Imagine sitting out a year of your prime as an athlete.
I respect D-Will but got no love for the former j*zz who used to own us lol. I think most posters probably have that mentality. Tho I voted DWill-Dirk-Dwight lol.
rose caused them the most problems during the season. durant's scoring can keep any team in the game, but unlike melo or dirk he has the size, quickness, and athleticism to stay with lebron. plus rose and durant are the youngest on that list so teaming them with howard now will give this combo the best chance to not only beat the heat now, but in the future as well.
A good point guard-Dwill, he has size, and will match up well with wade Kobe/Melo but its going to be a toss up, but LBJ can guard almost anybody in the league D-Howard would just manhandle bosh.
how can you not pick D-Will, Durant, Howard???? best point guard in the league against a heat team that is weak in and against the point guard position, best scorer in the league to keep dwyane wade and lebron busy on the defensive end who is also a good defender in his own right, defensive player of the year who is also the best center in the league against big z and bosh
I just think CP3 would compliment Durant better. CP3 is a bit better in terms of court awareness. Durant is such a primier offensive weapon. If I was to go with Dirk instead of Durant, I would have chosen D-Will as Dirk has better passing ability than Durant.
