Maybe, maybe not. I'd imagine Leslie is thinking about Morey's performance pretty constantly. I'm sure there are scenarios under which Morey, McHale or both can get fired before McHale's 3 guaranteed years run out. For example, if Morey and McHale was caught on camera raping a rookie.

Ah, Another graduate from the Sarah Palin School of Facts and Tomfoolery. Actually, McHale has NO championships experience as a HEAD COACH. You can look it up on Wikipedia if you like. I will admit that McHale cracked more jokes during his "interview" while Adelman was just too darned serious about winning basketball games which probably made him come off as a grumpy old man. After all, with 900 W's on his resume, what just does he know about winning in the NBA, right?

OK, please describe his championship experiences as a HEAD COACH. I would welcome that as I happen to enjoy reading science fiction. But I do believe you are right about one thing in that he can show the Rockets what a real championship ring looks like up close. BTW, those "championship experiences" really made a difference for the TWolves when he was the coach, eh?

Yes. The front office will be in the mix with coaching decisions. What I don't understand is why you see this as a negative. The Rockets have a wealth of analytical tools to put at McHale's disposal to help him optimize his lineups for a variety of game situations and matchups.

McHale was hired because of his popularity and stature in the eyes of players, his perceived leadership qualities, his purported strength in player development, and his wealth of basketball knowledge, in addition to his willingness to work with the front office. The theory is that these are the attributes most valuable in the man at the top and that the nuts and bolts of offense and defense can be delegated to specialists. He fit best with the organization's vision. It remains to be seen if this approach will work, but to suggest that a talentless yes-man was hired over demonstrably better candidates is a silly oversimplification.

Also, I'm not sure where you're getting this idea that the front office is trying to reduce the game to a set of numbers and don't value talent or experience, but I can assure you that's not the case. I'm curious - what is your perception of how the front office employs analytics?

according to daryl morey, they did, since he had a higher win percentage than the coaches he replaced. and that trend looks to continue, since he only has to get 44 wins next year to improve on the previous coach of the rockets.

Perhaps Morey shouldve examined the personnel he brought in for Adelman to coach. Adelman can only do so much with a 6'6 starting shotblocker:rolleyes:

    That was not Morey's fault.

if shotblocking was adelman's priority, he could have played patterson more minutes.

but nothing is ever adelman's fault ....

I have absolutely no problem with the FO providing analytical data and the coaches and players using it, as long as the coaches and players don't feel obligated to do so.

Don't have the link, but even Battier says he was provided with a ton of analytical data by Morey's guys but used only a very small portion of it. And my guess is he's one of the players who is more open to such data.

Also, there is such a thing as too much statistical information. From what little I've seen, a lot of basketball is about honing the players' instincts through (to borrow from McHale) repetition, repetition, repetition and repetition. A coach and FO will have to know when to pull back so that the analytical data doesn't conflict with this core process and the player becomes overwhelmed.

The OP was generally very free of condescension. I enjoyed it.

I agree. Which is why I think the value of statistical information is less relevant in the players' hands, and more useful as a tool to strategize around for the coaches. For instance, if statistically Jason Terry is far more successful going to his right, the coaches would tell the players to force him left. Of course that is the most basic and extremely simple example where you don't even need any analytics to know it. However, there are finer details in the game and nuances where the fine tooth comb that is statistical analysis could provide some help to the coaches.

So Adelman was in charge of player personnel? Perhaps Adelman signed off on all 30 transactions within the last 2 years as well

    Is Patterson's a center now?

You'd think the moreyites would've never actually watched a Rocket sometimes

Theoretically, yes. As I said, as long as the information is being used to complement those b-ball instincts and not replace or override them. Coaches can overthink things as much as players can IMO.

That's why I think it's curious that McHale will be the head coach of this entire affair. I could be wrong but he strikes me as someone who is comfortable following his well-honed basketball instincts over whatever the analytical data tells him if the two things come in conflict. This trait could be positive or negative, or even both.

Anyway, it will be interesting to see what kind of balance gets struck by Morey, McHale and their respective staffs.

I don't think mchale will be anyones puppet. The issue with rick and morey was 3 yrs in the making. It really came down to input. Morey didn't feel he needed to inform the coach about possible transactions and adelman felt all trade speculation and the overload at 1 position probably hurt the team. I don't think either is wrong, but we will have to see it play out. Morey now has his players, his coach, and now its on him. He has the structure he longed for and we shall see. I hope it works for the sake of the rockets.

The weird thing for me anyway is that no one complained when the Rockets staff gave Shane pages of notes on how to defend his man and to "captain" the offense. Also, I remember a thread about how Rockets scouts take down ridiculously detailed notes at games, which everyone understood will be crunched by analytical staff, and the response is also positive.

I know there are other examples. But generally, people find these positive, yet they're perfect examples of how Rockets management interferes with coaching.

It would be one thing if the Morey and his staff never messed with coaching aspect of the game ever, and just decided to let Adelman go because of a huge ego. But this sort of thing has been built up since the day Morey entered the picture. Yet four years later is when people start to complain!?

Great thread. In the end, there are a lot of assumptions about the reality of the situation in the hiring of Mchale, and the firing of Adelman. Morey is a guy that is going to pull the trigger on any deal that he feels makes the team better. After the trades this season, I felt the unit played completely better as a whole. Even the defense improved over pre-trade. That seems like the main point with Mchale. I could see it as Morey telling Mchale that he will make any trade to improve the team and Mchale replying that he will get the most out of whoever is on the roster. No one is wrong and no one is right, to me, if that was the source of the Adelman split. Mchale will have his chance to show the true colors of his hiring, and I have a feeling he will not disappoint.
