Someone hit my car while parked. Didn't notice until I arrived home. I was pissed because I knew this person would get away. Well long story short, I did some investigative work and caught the b*stard that did this. How? I went to the only place I had gone to that day and asked for video footage and sure enough I was able to catch the A-hole and unfortunately I didn't get a License plate number, but I did call the cops. Cops arrived reviewed it, asked if they purchased anything in the store, they did, we found his (the A-hole) name. Looked them up, contacted him and he admitted to the whole thing. I called and told him I didn't want to go through the police because it was too much. I will just take my car to get the cost for damages figured out. Its a minor scratch on the bumper, but he (the A-hole) doesn't know this. So what should I do? Play it safe and just get what i need repaired and give him the estimate, or milk it?
Tell him that the damages are over $200 and to send you monetary compensation for the vehicle plus $1000 for the time put into all of this. Otherwise you'll report him to the police and he could risk going to jail. http://www.mytexasdefenselawyer.com/texas-criminal-laws-penalties/hit-and-run/
Because this has happened to me before, but I didn't catch the person it makes me want to rip him off. I know he isn't at fault for the other person's actions, but he did hit my car and take off like b!tch. I think I want to be an A-hole to him for doing this. I just don't know how to approach it. I could make money out of it and they will probably never do it again. Or I could file the police report and they will definitely not do it again. Thanks for the info, I didn't know this. The damages came out to be $500 (Replacing bumper).
Yeah I think you're right. I'll just do what Shady suggested. Tell him to pay for the damages plus my time. $1000 all together sounds reasonable.
Be reasonable. Don't tack on more than a couple of hundred dollars and even that is pushing it. I know it's inconvenient, but at least he didn't try to deny it.
I know what you shouldn't do, and that's post all the details of how you're going to rip this guy off on clutchfans. You may think this will teach him a lesson, but it'll do the opposite. You think he's going to stick around next time if his idea of damage costs are inflated because of you? No way. And just wait until he finds out you screwed him over. He'll find out eventually. You're talking about a "scratch", which probably can be fixed or painted over and you're replacing the whole bumper. On top of that you doubled the price of it. He'll never stick around for the rest of his life.
Two wrongs don't make a right. Be content you were able to find his information. Get your car fixed and move on from this.
If the guy decides to go through his insurance, remember that they have lawyers and accountants who are just as determined to get to the bottom of things as you are.
It's a scratch that chipped my paint and it can't be painted over. The estimate I received is the legitimate cost to repair the scratch which requires repainting the whole bumper. I went to two different collision areas, sorry if I made it seem as if it was an insignificant scratch, because if it was I wouldn't have worried too much about it
Get your actual damages and let the police handle the rest (I figure there should be some sort of sanction for the hit-and-run part?).
Yup that's what I am doing. Filed the police report, I don't care about his driving record. I was being considerate since he admitted to the incident but the dude hit my car and took off for a reason. Oh well, sucks to be him. Thanks guys!!
Some ******* did this to my car last week. Big dent on the back left, plus a scratch. Second time I've been victim to a hit&run in the last year. Let this b**** be punished to the full extent of the law. Do not go easy on him. Make him think twice before he flees the scene the next time he hits someone.
Speaking of Hit and Run A-holes... This happened to my car last night. What's crazy is I was in my buddies backyard letting his dogs take care of business. When I looked over at my car across the street, BAM! A-hole hit my car, swerved over and kept going. All I could give HPD is a vehicle description for the report. Coolstorybro/FML
It's just a scratch. Don't sweat the small stuff. The stress is not worth it. Get a quote and handle it at a shop. You could go to your insurance agent and have them call his insurance, but your agent would probably reccommend handling it on your own also. Sometimes, your own rates will go up, even if you are not at fault. Many insurance companies ask if you have been in any accident, regardless of fault. If you report it to the cops, then you will have to report the accident each time you apply for new auto insurance.
