A major motivation for the hire looks to be that they believed having a coach calling all the shots without input from the front office was an outdated way of doing things.

Do you think it is a good thing or bad thing that "Morey and Co." will have more input into the coaching decisions? What level of collaboration is appropriate between the front office staff and the coaching staff?

    Call it 'trepidation'

"Trepidation," Alexander said in looking for the word that best describes his feeling today.
But don't let the trepidation fool you. If Alexander lacks something, it isn't conviction.

"I have confidence in myself and I have confidence in (general manager) Daryl (Morey) and the staff that we did hire the right guy; it's not like I feel like we didn't hire a great coach," Alexander said. "I think we have hired a great new coach."

Alexander believes basketball has moved into a new era and in a way the Rockets have been slow in getting there.

He thinks McHale takes them there by what he expects will be a collaborative effort at the top.

Alexander didn't want to offend Adelman, but he hinted several times the old-school method of basketball is dead in this town.

The old-school way was for the head coach to make almost all the calls, with a wall between the coach and the general manager.

That is not how Alexander sees his Rockets operating going forward. At most, there will be a net between Morey and McHale.

Final in-game decisions will be McHale's, but he will receive heavy input from Morey and Co. on everything from the hiring of assistant coaches to on which block to play players in the post.

    More collaborative spirit

"I don't think it's possible for one person's mind to work that hard to get it all done," Alexander said. "I think you have to have staff give you input. There's no other way.

"I'm very excited because I think we'll have more guns in our arsenal now than maybe before, because he's willing to accept more new ideas from Daryl and from the input of other people, and we'll be better at both ends of the court."

At the end of the day it was time for a change. I supported Rick Adelman but we just had to start over. Hopefully McHale can work with players like PP, Thabeet, and Hill(if he is even on the roster next season).

Unfortunately, that post is useless because it is just Les.

Why did you post that? duvarsa, while I was trying to say you were fair, not here....what?

"New era" would seem to be a "GM & Co" approach.

"Slow in getting there" means other teams are already doing that.

I don't see catching up with the times as a bad thing.

That even seems to be the case in the general business world as well, not having "walls" between people. Having things more direct and open. Everyone is so connected now with technology that it'd make sense to have a more fluid collaborative approach anyway.

I'm reminded of Bill Parcels. "They want you to cook the dinner; at least they ought to let you shop for some of the groceries. Okay?" And he's right. You can't have a coach not caring about players coming in when he's the one coaching them.

The problem with GM/Coach, of course, is that one person doing everything prevent him from doing either job well. So having two people(or two groups rather) collaborating with each other seems like the best of both worlds, if executed correctly.

And as Shroopy2 said, it's not like this is something revolutionary. Many other successful teams are doing the same thing. For example, does anyone believe San Antonio's coaching staff and front office aren't very well connected?

    trep·i·da·tion
    –noun
    1. tremulous fear, alarm, or agitation; perturbation.
    2. trembling or quivering movement; tremor.

    Does nobody read anymore?

If trepidation is what I can expect next season, I won't even bother.

Rick Adelman is a better coach than Kevin McHale.

He's proven it over a very long career, compared to our new head coach, who has yet to coach a full season.

I would feel trepidation too, if I were in the Rockets front office.

I was a huge DM fan, until I realized that he only crunches numbers, and gives a good ******* about people.

This is professional sports. It's about athletes.

You don't replace athletes with numbers.

Let someone who knows the game coach the game, and quit trying to interfere, fat boy.

I loved DM's influence on the Rockets, but driving away RA so that he could take control over a team that he is in no way prepared to control has put him on my ***** list.

Hiring a "coach" who hasn't coached a full season hasn't helped his case.

I'm very upset, and I'm actually hoping that we face a lockout, because otherwise we'll be looking at a ridiculously terrible season.

    Trepidation is a good word.

I just wish the Rockets knew what it meant.

The whole concept of this is ridiculous

Les must've forgot he the coach he let go had the highest winning
% in franchise history. All this "old school" "new school" stuff is only another excuse to buy Morey more time. This is definitely a low point for any Rocket fan

Guess what? If Adleman would have listened to Morey and stopped playing Brooks, th teame would have had a better season record. Adleman was too ****ing stubborn and kept playing him until Morey traded him. Seems to me that DM was right and Adleman was wrong and so are you.

    Guess what? Morey drafted Brooks.

If we're a better team without Brooks, then DM was wrong to get him in the first place, and you're wrong too.

    Suck that, and shut up.

So every roadblock Adelman overcame last year is diminished because he played Aaron Brooks? Sounds like Morey fans have ran outta legitimate criticism of Adelman. Perhaps you should recall he also stuck with Budinger early when he couldn't hit the side of a barn and couldn't defend anybody. Later on Bud had a good season. Is that because the genius of Morey? Or the simple fact Adelman installed confidence in him by telling him to keep shooting?

The same would apply to Aaron Brooks

How you pass off Aaron as Adelman's guy when Morey drafted him is beyond me.

Yes but it was Adleman who really wanted Aaron from him watching play for Oregon when RA was out of basketball. He was all over picking Brooks in that year's draft.

People keep saying that because Adelman saw him at Oregon and liked him. It's so stupid and irrelevant now anyways.

Aaron was absolutely magnificent against the lakers and barring injuries, they were the only team who could have beaten us in 08/09, we would have creamed Denver and Orlando.

Oh my God, that is absolute, freaking genius.

The next time someone praises the Dream, I'm going to use this logic to counter that and say, "Since we were a better team without Hakeem in 1998(? the year we traded him to Toronto), we therefore must've been wrong to draft him back in 1984 in the first place."

And why so mad for replacing an idiot with an idiot? If DM was wrong to draft Brooks, then Adelman was also stupid enough to play him for 3 years. Since stupidity exist everywhere, then what's the harm in replacing one idiot with another in McHale? In the end, everyone's dumb and replacing idiocy with more idiocy is not worth getting mad over.

So please, less venom. Be happy. :)

I call bull****. This is an owner wanting even more control than before. It comes down to this: Is Rick Adelman a better coach and leader than McHale? I think that's proven.

Short of us getting an impact player this team will do worse than the last 4 years combined. If you want people to tank, fine, tank, but don't tell us you expect things to get better.

Sure, if we get DHoward then of course we'll do better but short of a superstar this team is guaranteed to do worse than the last 4 years.

Call it what you will, but the owner is pulling all the strings now. That's not good for the Rockets and that's what upsets me.

Adelman had just been hired in May of 07. The draft was June in 07.

You honestly believe DM didn't want Aaron? That brand new coach alone made that pick? Personnel is job one for a GM. His job rides on it. No way he turns that over to Rick.
