The CBA won't expire till the end of June. So, a draft-day trade can be executed immediately.

As Williams vs Kanter, another possibility would be a 3-way trade to move Utah or Cleveland up to take Williams at #2 and we could take Kanter at #3 or #4.

Of course I agree with you on Ellis. Just stating the fact that it sets the negotiation price pretty high all things considering. For example, if the Rockets offer say Chase Budinger, and 2 first round picks... Im pretty sure Sota would say... but Golden State offered Monte Ellis....no Martin, no deal.

I was thinking the same thing.

Suppose that Morey really loved either Kanter or Valanciunas enough to be willing to part with Scola (and make Pat the starter with either Hill or, preferably, a re-signed Hayes as the primary backup PF), then perhaps the following three-team trade would be palatable to all parties, conditioned on Morey's guy falling to #6:

Minnesota gets: Luis Scola, #14 pick, draft rights to Sergio Llull, 2012 WAS 1st rounder (limited protection)
Washington gets: #2 pick (Williams), #23 pick
Houston gets: Martell Webster, #6 pick, #18 pick

The Wolves get their veteran big man in Scola (who can probably help them more than "the difference between Williams and Beasley"), get to reduce payroll by losing Webster (a decent player, but where does he fit with a team that already has Wes Johnson and Michael Beasley?), gets the #14 pick from Houston, gets the rights to Llull (of whom I'm sure their "stellar international scouting department" thinks highly), AND gets another future first rounder (which probably helps them more than yet another mid-first rounder this year).

The Wizards get their guy in Derrick Williams (moving up from #6 to #2), while "only" having to move back 5 spots with their second first rounder and giving up a (lottery? top-10?) protected 2012 first rounder (the protection can burn off over time).

The Rockets get "their guy" at #6 (moving up from #14), plus move up from #23 to #18, at the cost of Scola and Llull, while taking on Webster (who could actually start at SF for this team). Martell's contract is not that bad, actually, as he'll make $4.8M next season (or less, if salaries are rolled back under the new CBA), and his 2012-13 salary is only guaranteed for $600k, essentially making him--like Brad Miller--EITHER another expiring contract that can clear room for 2012 cap space OR an attractive trade asset around the 2012 NBA Draft.

Again, this is all conditioned on "that guy available at #6" being viewed by Morey & Co. as someone who can help them long-term much more than Scola can in the mid-term.

    Just an idea.

Derrick Rose and Russell Westbrook are much worse ball hogs.

"Not prone"??? You're selling me short. I'm the LEAST LIKELY PERSON ON THE PLANET to use hyperbole.

I'd assume that big man the Wolves are looking for is a center.

Why would you want another PF with Love already on the team?
I mean, yeah, it's David Kahn and all, but I don't see even him being interested in a Scola-Love frontline.

Bima, I love that proposal. I question whether Scola is the type of big man they are looking for, though. I know there are very few true centers in the NBA today, but would they really trade the #2 pick and be happy with a Scola-Love frontcourt (plus a few potential role players at best)? That would be a terrible defensive team.

But sign me up for Webster and a legit center at #6.

The problem with Minnesota's demand for a "Veteran big man" is that, well, there aren't a lot of big men available that would be good enough to warrant a #2 + fillers trade.

In defense of Rose- his only secondary offensive option turned out to be Deng and he got his looks. Who else did you want him to pass to? Boozer......?

What if something massive happens like:

    Dwight Howard
    JJ Redick

    For

    Wesley Johnson
    Michael Beasley
    Anthony Randolph
    Jonny Flynn
    Anthony Tolliver
    Nikola Pekovic
    #2

    ?

That would fill the "Wolves want a veteran big man" prerequisite. They lose a lot of depth but my goodness a front line of Kevin Love AND Dwight Howard?

I think Monta gets labeled unfairly. He's not as efficient as Kevin Martin, sure, but he's not a blackhole/chucker. He was the #1 option on his team, played 40 minutes a game, and took 20FGA/game. His per 36 minutes shows that he takes exactly .5 more FGA than Kevin Martin does.

Not to mention, he's also averaging 5.6 assist a game. He's a nice little player that's been stuck on a terrible franchise -- I hope he gets a fresh start somewhere.

I like that a lot. I would hope Houston can get high enough to get Kanter but I'm guessing the number 6 pick probably gets you Valanciunas or maybe Biyombo if you are looking for a center. Number 18 might get you high enough for Chris Singleton.

Biyombo and Singleton would be a great draft IMO. They would make the Rockets defense a lot better. Plus it would put Pat in the starting rotation which would be another big boost for the defense.
