Is comcast internet really this bad? They are coming next week to install.

UVerse network has been rock solid.

Depends on your neighbors. I get slow or no response, between 9 and 10 pm weekday nights.

I had it a few years ago and most of my problems were with both my router and the cable modem. I had to reset them more often than I think is reasonable.

with Uverse you get a gateway included in the price and it has been rock solid but it is slow and old technology with only a 100Mbps switch. Decisions decisions.

You are going the wrong direction. I can't imagine going back to Comcast, where glitches and hiccups are much more common than U-Verse.

Can you expand on them? The problems I had before were related to the modem and router. What issues did you have?

    U-VERSE.

They always will make some sort of deal with you, just say Comcast offered you something better and it never fails.

    I picked "Other"

Verizon Fios is as good as it gets IMO. ATT Uverse is the only one comparable.

I've had Comcast for more than 6 years now, and can't say I've had any real problems with them. Been out for a day or 2 for hurricanes, but other than that, it worked as expected.

I guess it depends on where you are, and if your neighbors have the service too, I think.

Also, for all the terabytes of junk I've downloaded these past few years, never had them send me a warning to cap my usage!

Depends on what part of town you are in. However, in Memorial when you lose it... you lose it for a while. You basically can't do anything about it. You just have to wait. Can be short or very very long. One time it was over a day.

Never had a problem with Comcast. I pay $20/month for 15 download / 6 upload for the full year. Have my own modem, own router. Everything works great.

My girlfriend has DSL from AT&T. She pays $25/month for 768 kbps, had to purchase the AT&T modem/router for $100, and had to get the AT&T guys to fix the phone line.

She didn't get the best deal, but women don't know technology and go with what's the simplest route even if it makes no sense. That said, you can always get better deals from the customer service reps. It just depends on which rep you get and how many times you want to call.

Why not just put a faster router or switch in between the gateway and your pc's? I have a gigabit switch between my gateway and pc's in my geek room. That way I can make fast transfers among my pc's across the gigabit switch and the 100 mbps gateway is still faster than my connection to the Internet (18 mbps), so it's not a big deal.

Yeah I thought about it but decided to buy the cable modem I posted a link to earlier. Amazon has yet to ship it so I am thinking to cancel it and keep UVerse.

I didn't realize comcast had such a bad rep. Might just be because more people have it, thus more problems.

    In Memorial, Comcast is horrible.

Earlier this year, my home phone would not work. And I would call the 1800COMCAST and an automated voice mail would pop up saying that it is a problem in my area. Fast forward two weeks later, phone starts working again. I call 1800COMCAST trying to get some credit or money back. They said they have no record of me calling them... which is bull **** cause I didn't talk to a representative because of their damn automated message.

**** Comcast. I have had several ****ty experiences with them.
I'mma be switchin to UVerse pretty soon.

I really appreciate all the feedback, guys. Confirming what I suspected. And again, Fios would have been my first choice hands down.

Related question: I'm getting an apartment in Houston soon, and Comcast basic cable (all I need) is included in my rent. Should I use them for internet, too, or someone else?

You'd probably need to check with the apartment, since they can be pretty restrictive about your options.
