One in 20 PCs is infected with malware, according to statistics gathered by a free Microsoft scanning tool. Interestingly, the average infected PC contained 3.5 pieces of malware, and most of those malware applications exploited Java vulnerabilities.

Those findings come via Microsoft Safety Scanner (MSS), a free, recently updated tool from Microsoft that's designed to clean up after a malware infection. The tool expires 10 days after being downloaded to force users to download a new version with the latest updates.

here's the link to the free scanner. download it and see if you're infected.

    Most common reason? JAVA!

I run malwarebytes and Spybot every single time I get on my PC at home. Do people not regularly scan their PC's?

^ the fact that you have to do that on your PCs means that someone (or you) in your house doesn't know the rules about not installing free crap or viewing pr0n.

I rarely scan mine and when I do (perhaps 3 or 4 times a year), it finds nothing.

First, I would be surprised if the seemingly low 5% is accurate, but if accurate that is somewhat reassuring.

Second, the "Mac FTW" is an asinine comment and the sort of mentality that brings disdain along with misplaced and unwanted attention to that OS amidst discussions like this.

Third, the article on the apple memo is kinda lame and seems rather petty in its attempt to frame them as being monstrous in this regard. But Gizmodo has no reason to put a negative slant on it, do they? anyway.... seems Apple is not being being quite as abandoning as implied perhaps, as it seems they've released an OS update to remedy the issue.

I'm over pr0n, I have a hot fiance'. I do download free stuff, but from secure private sites. I guess it's just habit after the nasty virus that took 4 days to get off of my PC a few years ago. Freaked me out a lil' bit.

I literally have no idea what that even means. I don't look at pr0n, don't need it. If I feel the need to needle the dough I can make stuff up in my head, I don't need the same 5 whores on every pr0n site to excite the glitter stick.

Dude, no one "needs" pr0n, we all just like it. Admit it. :p

Anyway, pr0n makes the Internet (and spyware, alas) work.
