Probably 10:40 left in the 1st quarter in this photo.

So you have no opinion on the character of Yao Ming, or Shane Battier, or Steve Nash, or Grant Hill?

So you rather judge them on the court, where it's in their best interest not to act up and get fined or thrown out, but you won't judge them off the court, because it's in their best interest to not act out. Gotcha.

I respect the way they handle themselves on the court, particularly Battier. It's difficult to compete so well defensively and rarely, if ever, make a dirty play. I don't know much about him personally, I've never met him. So, I have no opinion of their overall character, just their "basketball" character.

I can judge a player as a player by the way that he presents himself on the court. I could make a judgement of the person as a whole, as most do, but based on how little I see of them off the court it would not be a well informed one.

He's four more wins away from making that tattoo a reality. Who would have thought he'd come this close?

For the most part, I actually think it's the opposite.

What you see on the court are usually very natural reactions - their true colors, if you will. What you see in interviews or when they're appearing at a charity event is often a very calculated representation of how they want to be perceived.

During a game, otherwise nice guys might shift their personality to try to give themselves a competitive edge. So, I wouldn't necessarily call that natural either. A guy like Kendrick Perkins seems like a thug on the floor, but its evident that he's a great teammate and leader who respects the game if you pay attention to what he does and says off the court and from the bench.

I'm more interested in how the player interacts with teammates, the respect he shows for the other team when the game is over, his willingness to sacrifice for the good of his team. What exactly has Jason Terry done anyway to make him such a hated figure? Was it anything worse than that hand gesture Sura/Barry/Wesley used to make in 2005 when they hit 3s? Was it worse than Mario Elie's "kiss of death" in 1995?

I think some good guys have to do dumb superstitious stuff or gimmicks to "build" an edge that they wouldnt normally have.

Like Derek Fisher ramming into Scola years ago in the playoffs. He would appear the "consummate" professional in everything he does. But he and the team probably thought they had to some something assholey to get some competitive fire.

    "Studio gangstas".

I am certain that Mav fans love Terry, but he has to be one of the most annoying players in the league along with Derek Fisher. He loves to play the Rockets, that's for sure.

Could you imagine the outrage around here if Lebron had done this?

I don't like the dude, but I don't see a problem with a player who has never won a trophy tattoo it to his body.

It might be the closest thing he'll ever come to Mr. Larry O'Brian's trophy. To me this is no different to AI tattooing "The Answer" to his arm. You don't see anyone complaining about that.

Hell, yes there's a big difference. Elie's was a one-time gesture at the end of a grueling series in which he dealt with trash talk from the Phoenix bench the entire series, particularly Joe Kleine. Sura, Barry and Wesley? A minor gesture. You're seriously comparing them to the continual showboating that Terry does EVERY GAME, IN THE FIRST QUARTER?? Lame.
