I saw this story on the Memphis website, this morning. Grizzlies granted permission for Jorger inteview. Joerger will meet with Morey, next week. They are one step closer to Joerger.

Click on the link for the full story. I will put a few excerpts.

Former Dakota Wizards Coach Dave Joerger An NBA Head Coaching Candidate?

This was ESPN's David Thorpe's response during a chat yesterday when asked who would be the perfect head coach for the New Jersey Nets.

    I'll concur.

Living in North Dakota for much of my life and being the minor league basketball junkie that I am, I'm rather familiar with the coaching credentials of Joerger - he's won five minor league titles, earned three coach of the year honors and was the head coach of the winning team in perhaps the greatest basketball moment I've ever watched live (above - and you're lying if that doesn't give you goosebumps).

With the Dakota Wizards (five of his seven minor league head coaching seasons were spent in Bismarck), he was the head coach when the following players received an NBA call-up: Oliver Miller, Rodney Buford, Maurice Carter, Kaniel Dickens, Eddie Gill, Sean Lampley, Oliver Miller again, Billy Thomas, Maurice Baker, Renaldo Major, Justin Williams, Melvin Sanders and Junior Harrington. I don't believe there's another coach that can boast a tangible list of players he's developed quite like Joerger can - especially in such a short span and all before turning 35.

Don't fret, though - as the multiple championships will tell you, he's just as good with the X's and O's as he is at developing talent. He's also been handed the keys to the Grizzlies during the past two Vegas Summer League's, giving him quality experience as a head coach with NBA players as well.

Let it be known that when Joerger finally gets an NBA heading coach gig, it'll be the happiest I've ever been for a call-up.

If this guy really is as great a Xs and Os guy as people say he is, then I'm very much sold. I'm more surprised that Memphis isn't trying to keep him, especially after by far the best season in franchise history. Why aren't they making him a top assistant?

The Rockets front office is definitely looking for a well-rounded coaching staff rather than just seeking a head coach, who then proceed to surround himself with his own guys. So this looks to be more like a staff-by-committee method rather than a strict hierarchy. Curious to see how it turns out.

I think they will try to keep him. In the end, it may be a matter of money.

Grizzlies have lead assistant Johnny Davis under contract. It may be illegal to renege on a contract to demote a lead assistant and cut his pay. That's the only reason that I can think of.

is this a potentially new trend in the NBA?

select a head coach and then offensive and defensive coordinators. Have we seen this before?

I would think that Joerger would like to be head coach some day. A lead assistant coach position is the next step in his career. Tom Thibs was the lead assistant for JVG and Rivers. Casey is a lead assistant for the Mavs. Mike Budenholzer is the lead assistant for the Spurs. Elston Turner is the lead assistant for the Rockets. Notice how all their names have been in headlines for head coach positions compared to the plain jane assistant coaches.

I think they usually hire the head coach before the assistants. But I assume you are talking about these hires being made by the front office, and not by the head coach himself?

IF this works, it might indeed be the new trend. And I don't know that it is that bad an idea. Usually, head coaches bring along guys they have coached before or worked with in the past, sometimes for many years. Actually, though, a different perspective can definitely be helpful. But you have to have a head coach willing to allow it. As we've seen, someone like Adelman, who has had a very successful career in the NBA, was not going to allow it. And why should he? His way works for him.

McHale doesn't have that track record to fall back on, and is probably completely content letting Morey and Les pick his guys. Since he doesn't have a long history of coaching and working with reliable people, he was probably just going to call up the best available assistants anyway. If this can work, I think the Rockets are going to have the guys that can make it happen.

The current Mavericks essentially do this.... so did the Celtics teams from the 80's with Bill Fitch.... the current Celtics team... The Championship Bulls teams of the 90's....

The only difference is that the assistants are not getting attention... many winning teams have an offense/defense specialist coach...
